The answer to postpartum hair loss? LA Science Follicle Stimulating Shampoo Review

Posted on

Pregnancy is a weird old experience. As if growing a baby in your tummy isn’t enough of a miracle, many women find that a bulging belly & evaporating waistline isn’t the only physical change their body will go through. Yep, the much touted “pregnancy glow” isn’t simply a thing your friends will toss at you to make you feel better when your tummy juts out beyond your breasts, it’s a very real phenomenon. Many women will find their nails grow stronger & longer in pregnancy, and their hair becomes thicker, fuller & more healthy-looking.

049

We can credit pregnancy hormones for our luscious locks, in particular a surge in estrogen. Increased blood circulation and a pumped-up metabolism bring more nutrients to your hair, making it less brittle and likely to fall out. Normally, the average head loses 100 hairs a day — but not all at once, so you don’t notice them. Pregnancy temporarily halts this shedding giving mums-to-be longer & fuller tresses.

Postpartum hair loss

Unfortunately, before you have time to get your bum down to a L’Oreal casting, your baby will arrive and post-partum hairloss will kick in. Between 3-6 months after giving birth many women experience a sudden shedding where hair that didn’t fall out in pregnancy, now will. So, at a time when you are most likely sleep deprived, missing your bump, and feeling terribly body conscious, it can come as quite the shock to wake up to a pillow full of hair.

Introducing LA Science Follicle Stimulating Shampoo & Anti Hair Loss Serum

LA Science Hairloss

LA Science dual anti hair loss regime uses clinically proven technology to improve the thickness, and overall health of your hair. An advanced anti hair loss system, LA Science Follicle Stimulating Shampoo & Serum offers a twofold treatment to tackle the woes of thinning hair, and extend the growth phase of the hair cycle.

Not only is it quickly garnering a reputation as a solution for postpartum hair loss, it’s also fab for both men and women suffering during the winter months due to changeable weather and the effects of central heating.

How does it work?

It’s all quite simple really. It uses an active peptide combination that is delivered directly to the roots to nurture and thicken thinning hair. The act of gently massaging LA Science Follicle Stimulating Shampoo into the scalp every day, helps to increase blood flow to the scalp, condition hair and follicles and prevent hair loss.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Copper Tripeptide (to increase blood supply) / Biotin & Arginine (to create a healthy environment for hair to thrive) / Hydrolysed Keratin & Silk (a fibrous structural protein, naturally occurring within hair, that helps protect it from damage and stress)

Couple this with twice daily LA Science Anti Hair Loss Serum and your hair has the very best weapons at its disposal to combat physical stress on the hair shaft and defend itself against breakage.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Peptides (to encourage stronger hair shafts to grow at source) / Portulaca Oleracea & Polygala Tenuifolia Root Extracts (Chinese herbs renowned for their ability to balance hair & scalp deficiencies) / Hyaluronic acid (a moisturiser capable of carrying up to 100x its weight in water to further condition the hair)

LA SCIENCE PRESS

As featured in More Magazine, Maytime Times & Your Hair Magazine

Delivery of the active ingredients to the hair follicle helps:

  1. - Improve blood supply to the scalp
  2. - Revitalise and rejuvenate the hair follicle
  3. - Strengthen the hair shaft
  4. - Normalise the hair growth cycle
  5. - Inhibits depigmentation
  6. - Activates the stem cells of the hair follicle

What did I make of it?

I’ve always had very thin and fine hair. It won’t hold a curl any longer than an hour, and only needs threatening with a pair of straighteners to fall into line. When I was a teenager, my ears would regularly poke through this gossamer curtain and I earned the nicknamed “weasel ears” - needless to say I absolutely hated it and always lusted after fuller hair.

Pregnancy delivered this dream in all it’s technicolour glory and brushing my hair was a real treat. My Denman brush was swept to the side to make way for an oversized paddle brush, and I started having fun with my GHDs. Yet all this was short-lived and my hair promptly fell out when I packed in breastfeeding after 6 weeks.

LA Science seemed like an interesting proposition. I understood the science behind it, but wondered just how much more effective it would be compared to a good head massage (which would surely bring about a similar increased blood flow). I also had reservations about how soft and glossy my hair would be if I ditched my conditioner (this is not required when you use the shampoo & serum in tandem).

Using the system is a bit of a departure from my normal hair care regime. As my hair is prone to drying out and split-ends, I only tend to wash it 3 times a week. Switching to daily washing was a bit of a chore at first, but spurred on by the possibility of thicker hair, I stuck with it.

The shampoo is best described as iridescent in colour and smells like liquid hand soap (so not unpleasant). It comes in an 250ml pump action bottle with screw top lid (ideal for eeking out the dregs of the bottle) and lathers beautifully making it easy to massage in. I paid extra attention to my scalp and massaged it in for a good 5 mins before working it through to the ends.

LA Science

The serum is fragrance-less and a light and non greasy texture that sinks in quickly. It’s recommended you massage in twice a day (morning & 2 hours before bedtime) although I was a little confused as the instructions didn’t state whether to use on wet or dry hair, and how much to use. I ended up doing a bit of both - massaging in a few generous drops after my morning hair wash onto towel dried hair, and in the evening on bone dry hair. Pleasingly, as the formula is so light, it didn’t leave my hair feeling greasy, lank or itchy.

In fact, the serum is the real winner for me. It’s like a leave-in conditioner that delivers soft and healthy-looking hair that stays clean and fresh for longer. On the few occasions I haven’t got around to washing my hair of a morning, the serum keeps my hair from drying out and prepares it perfectly for styling.

Does my hair feel thicker? Yes, a little. I’m only two weeks into my trial but I already feel more hair-confident.

Does it feel healthier? Yes, yes, yes.

Any niggles? Nope.

LA Science are priced very reasonably at £14.99 (shampoo) & £29.99 (serum) and available from all major Boots stores and online at www.la-science.co.uk (the website is currently having a makeover so to purchase online, head on over to Amazon). Keep floors sparkling with Spontex full action system

Posted on

I’m a terrible housewife. I love messing around with the kids during the day but the house will often look like a crime scene by the time their dad gets home from work.

Things have been made worse by the fact we’ve just moved house and now have laminate floor in my kitchen and dining room. This is my pet hate as it seems to show up dust and dirt far more than the tiles in my previous home. Cleaning it is really the pits. I’m usually down on my hands and knees with a bowl of water and a rag looking like a downtrodden Cinderella. It’s cold, it’s uncomfortable, it’s dirty. I hate this job so much, I often trade it in with Craig for a less strenuous one - maybe bathing the kids or blitzing the bathroom.

So when I received an email recently with news of the Spontex Full Action System, I was really keen to try it out. The website promised a compact, effective and efficient cleaning system. The bucket has a hidden compartment for water disposal meaning that it is entirely splash-free. For both wetting and wringing out the mop, you simply rest it upon a ledge (of sorts) within the bucket and spin the mop head by moving your hand up and down the shaft of the mop. This means you use less water, and the mop is not too wet when you begin mopping - in short, you can do the entire job without bending over.

Due to its exclusive 360 degree self-wringing system, Spontex Full Action System wrings and rinses the mop head effectively and easily. The microfibre fringes are super absorbent and the mop head has an extra microfibre pad underneath for maximum surface coverage. You can easily empty and clean the bucket which is specially designed to prevent splashing whilst wringing!

As for the mop itself, it’s a pleasure to use. It’s incredibly lightweight and the head will flex back and forth as you clean. Owing to its quality soft fine microfibre head, you also get superb contact with the floor. Being ultra absorbent it also doesn’t simply move dirt from one area to another, rather you get a streak-free finish that is quick-to-dry - so perfect for busy families that can’t spend more than five minutes out of the kitchen.

The microfibre mop is made up of thousands of tiny fibres, so the number of contact points with the surface is greater than a standard mop, making it more absorbent and ultra efficient at picking up dirt and dust. It is also machine washable and you can use it without chemicals too, reducing detergent consumption and helping you do your bit for the environment

Although it’s round it handles tight spaces and corners brilliantly as it has an extra microfibre pad underneath that you can push right up against furniture and kitchen units. This also means stubborn marks lift off easily with a little bit of back and forth action.

I also really like the fact you don’t have to spend a fortune on hazardous cleaning products too. I simply use a tiny squirt of washing up liquid which performs perfectly adequately. When finished, you can unclip the mop head and pop it in the washing machine eradicating resulting smells and extending the life of your mop. With this in mind, a quick tip to anyone thinking of investing in this system would be to buy a replacement head (just £4.99) at the same time. This means that when one head is in the washing machine, you have a spare ready for minor spillages.

One last minor point is that it could have done with a few more instructions for putting it together and operating the spin / wringer function on the bucket. I must admit, I did hear a few expletives coming from the kitchen when I tasked Craig with setting it up. I figured this out straight away but my Craig (like so many men before him) loves a good instruction book.

I won’t say that the Spontex Full Action System has made me fall in love with cleaning my floors as a lottery win would see me cheerfully handing this job onto someone else, but it has halved the time it takes to complete the job and I am far happier on my feet than my hands and knees. As far as mops go, this is probably the best I’ve used and I’d happily recommend to anyone in the market for a new one.

Fisher-Price Princess Walker Review

fisher-price-logo

So our little princess recently got a right royal treat and has been putting this Fisher-Price Princess Walker through its paces.

What is it?

It’s a seriously girlie walker that doubles as a doll’s pushchair with music and lights. A wide, stable base and easy-grasp handle help steady first steps whilst sounds and flashing lights reward every wobbly step. This encourages gross motor development and early role play as your little princess can copy mummy and nurture her own baby.

IMG_7862 (2)

A press of the “magic” wand button rewards baby with fun sounds, while clacker beads and butterfly flip book on the bumper bar help foster fine motor skills.

This walker is recommended for ages 9-36 months with a RRP of £34.99. Stockists include Kiddicare, Toys R Us, Argos and Amazon. Princess Chime Doll sold separately.

What we thought

Steadiness

Heidi has been walking since 7 months and now, at 17 months is regularly taking short trips without a pushchair. Because she’s got this nailed, she isn’t using her walker to practice, rather she prefers to pretend she’s a mummy and use it for role play. Having said that, in terms of steadiness, I’d highly recommend this over traditional push along toys. Dexter used a wooden cart when he was learning and would regularly tip it over or go careering into a wall. This walker acts as an incredibly stable walking aid and will even remain upright if baby attempts to pull themselves up using the handlebar.

PricessWalkerFisherPrice

It’s also suitable on all surfaces from carpet, to grass to wooden flooring and glides with ease over bumpy pavements too. Having tried this out on Heidi’s younger cousins, they also seem to find it easier to stop themselves - rather than find themselves propelled forward uncontrollably as with other walkers.

Assembly

In terms of assembly, Craig had this sorted in a matter of minutes. It’s simply a case of slotting bits together and screwing them into place. No batteries with this one though so you’ll need to purchase 3x AA batteries separately (always worth noting if you’re buying it as a gift).

Interactivity

There’s also exactly the right of amount of interactivity. Having used the ever-popular Vtech First Steps Baby Walker with both children, I did notice they regularly got distracted by all the lights and sounds on the front of the toy. Worse still, they’d lean over the toy whilst walking to activate them meaning they often fell over. As the princess walker makes sounds whilst baby walks, she is more likely to concentrate on her walking.

IMG_7962 (2)

Speaking of the music and sounds, thankfully these aren’t headache-inducing. They can be activated either by pushing the walker, or pressing the heart and there’s a volume control and an off switch, should you need a little peace and quiet.

Heidi loves the butterfly flip book on the front of the stroller and will stand and do this for some time whilst coo’ing at her dolly. It also has four beads to push back and forth and spin and it’s great to watch her master something so fiddly.

Durability

It’s a tough little thing and has survived a right bashing from a jealous Dexter (yep, this isn’t just for girls!). As the wheels protrude out at the front of the toy, if your little one does go headfirst into a wall it won’t mark it.

DexterPrincess

The Princess Chime Doll

This little lady is sold separately but a must-have accompaniment for the walker. Although the walker will support other soft toys and dolls, none fits better than this. Once in, she really stays put so you won’t find yourself forever bending over to retrieve her should you little one take her for an off-road stroll.

She’s super soft (the only plastic is on her tiara) and makes a soft chiming sound when shaken. Again, both Heidi and Dexter enjoy giving her a cuddle!

Princess Chime

In conclusion, these two products in combination with one another would make a fab gift for a little one. As evidenced by both Heidi (17ms) and Dexter (3 years) it offers a whole host of features that will support your child’s early development and grow with them as their capabilities change.
