Gorgeous Tutus from Angel’s Face

I hadn’t thought Heidi would be so girly, but she’ll sprint to anything pink on her little knees and elbows, then flutter those huge eyelashes at us when we clap her progress. She’s every inch the little princess.

So when this cream tutu arrived in a simply lovely presentation box from Angel’s Face, I knew it would suit Heidi down to the ground. A perfect gift for special girls, it arrived impeccably wrapped in pristine grey and white tissue paper with an accompanying brochure crammed full of beautifully shot flyers and next year’s catalogue. When you strip the paper off, you’re left with a vintage style hate box that will house your tutu to keep it in perfect condition. Lifting off the lid, the sumptuous layers spill out like candyfloss! It’s a seriously impressive array of packaging!

So who are Angel’s Face?

Angel’s Face was created by mother of three, Keely Deininger, in 2007 as a kitchen table business. Throughout her life, Keely has always displayed a flair for creativity, designing her own clothing from the age of 8. After a busy career in fashion design, when her third child was born, she left her corporate career behind her in order to pursue a lifelong dream of owning her own business.

The key product from Angel’s Face is the pettiskirt, a wonderfully full ruffle tutu skirt available in a multitude of colours; from vibrant pinks, to dove greys, from ruby reds to dusky emeralds.

Angel's Face

Having now expanded the collection to include tutu dresses, ruffle tops and coordinating cardies, Angel’s Face has evolved from the kitchen table to a brand selling worldwide, which is carried in the finest department stores such as Selfridges, John Lewis and House of Fraser.

And what does Heidi think?

It’s a hit. She’s worn her ivory tutu both on its own, and with pops of colour and she looks totally adorable in it. It’s so soft, she can’t help but sink her tiny fingers into all the frills; there’s no coarse cheap lace that might chaff or irritate baby, it’s made from 100% pure nylon which feels like silk against her baby soft skin.

HeidiTutu2

The baby version (as modeled by Heidi) has an elasticated waistband to accommodate growth up to 1 year. Heidi is now 8 months and this fits her perfectly with plenty of room to spare, although I’m certain it would have fit her from 3 months onwards. There’s a large silky bow at the front too although this is just for show and doesn’t serve to tighten the skirt.

Tutu Heidi

Heidi’s tutu has taken on even more special meaning as, during our photo-shoot, she let go of the sofa for the very first time and managed to stand on her own for a whole minute! I’m so proud of her - at just shy of 8 months we’re now convinced she’ll be walking by the New Year.

Speaking of photography, this is the ultimate photo prop for babies and girls up to their teens. Whether you’re taking your baby to a studio, or just want some gorgeous photos of your little madam on a nature walk, the silky ruffles look positively amazing and there’s plenty of movement too!

HeidiTutu5

The pettiskirts are perfect for aspiring ballerinas or Frozen fans, for christenings, wedding or birthday girls. When babies are bundled up in your arms, it cascades beautifully and hides away frilly knickers or nappies - and also looks pretty bobbing away from you across the living room carpet. When baby finally grows out of it, you can tuck it away in her memory box to pass down to her own little girl (if she’s lucky enough to have one) in some 20 years time - if you’re reading this some years in the future Heidi - At least 20 years please!

Surprisingly it’s machine washable but I’m not sure I’d go down this route, gentle hand-washing seems the safest option to ensure it continues to look as beautiful as it does when you first open that box.

Heidi’s tutu is £35.00 which is a fraction over their biggest rivals Miss Francis. For older girls, prices go up to £60.00 for their most expensive nylon and lace mix. It is an investment, but a worthwhile one for all those photographs and special occasions. If it hadn’t been so soft I’d have balked a little at the price, but the quality is just amazing and I can’t see how anyone could possibly be disappointed. Oh, and there’s also free delivery for orders over £30, with a free keepsake angels wings bracelet if you spend over £40.

Botanic Health Care NESSkin Therapy Support Review

Posted on

I’m desperately passionate about children’s skincare (and my own). It’s a love passed down to me from my mum, and a genuine fascination with skincare ingredients. Being so in tune with my children’s skin means I notice the slightest change to the smallest patch of skin and whip out any one of a number of products to correct it. Yet when Dexter came down with bronchitis recently and came out in an epic rash, I took to Twitter in a panic. Here’s the hastily-taken iPhone pic I sent live on social media:

Following the advice of many, we rushed him down the GP in a bid to get some answers. Yet in all-too-familiar fashion, we were casually dismissed with “He’s just a bit run down“. I could rant about my doctor’s surgery all day but I won’t. Needless to say, it was a small UK based skin care business that came through for us; Botanic Health Care. Emails were exchanged and a lovely lady called Phyllis bundled some goodies in the post to try and calm his irritated skin.

Who are Botanic Health Care?

It was founded in 2010, by Ghanian born Phyllis Nsiah. She was brought up in a culture where maintaining the skin’s equilibrium through the use of herbs was the norm, and skin care was made with 100% natural ingredients.

Growing up as a teenager in London, Phyllis’s career path started with a degree in Applied Biology and human skin cell research. This scientific knowledge combined with the natural health wisdom laid the foundation for the future creation for Botanic Health Care.

Moving into motherhood and out of the laboratory, Phyllis went back to nature’s basics to tackle the varied skin health needs of her family; a mixed bag of eczema, sensitive and normal skin types, all in need of nourishment and hydration. In her kitchen, Phyllis created body washes, moisturising skin lotions and healing balms using pure botanicals that replenished thirsty skin throughout the day.

We need to maintain our body and skin health in the same way we use food for energy. With the process refined, every drop of herbal extract and precious oil has a tried and tested purpose in the Botanic Health Care range Phyllis Nsiah

So what were we sent?

The NESSkin Support Therapy range is made primarily people with medical skin issues including eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis. Although Dex usually doesn’t usually suffer from skin conditions, Heidi certainly does. I’m very used to people commenting on her baby eczema and the various scratches where she’s clawed at her itchy skin.

We were very kindly sent the samples above - all of which contain a raft of active ingredients to calm and protect delicate skin.

And what did we think?

The NESSkin Therapy Support Skin Wash is so mild it froths up lightly and rinses away in seconds. If you’re bathing a baby it’s therefore ideal if you worry about residue left on hypersensitive skin.

The scent of tea, geranium rose, lavender, nettle, chamomile and tea tree hits you immediately and is wonderfully calming. Yet this is a departure from the usual heavy lavender-based skin washes you find for babies. It’s a nod to all the old wives tales you hear about oats at socks & teabags. The scent doesn’t linger, it’s there to relax and cleanse baby, then its job is done.

The foaming action is 100% natural using soapwort, and there’s regenerating panthenol and pure essential oils of yarrow and chamomile for soothing itchy skin. Tea tree and nettle are fab for their naturally occurring antimicrobial properties, whilst geranium rose and orange flower boast astringent, tonic and antiseptic effects (as well as providing relief from common colds). There are no mineral oils, genetically engineered ingredients, or preservatives, and this (and all skincare products) are cruelty-free.

Weighing in at a reasonable £14.00 for 200mls, there are also 30ml samples also available for trialing the wash on your family’s skin.

The NESSkin Therapy Support Nourishing Dry Skin Balm is also a little bit special. A shea butter and cocoa butter blend deliver intensive moisture to dry chapped skin, whilst beeswax and carnauba wax give the balm a greasy sugary texture that needs warming in your hands before applying to the skin. It’s also packed with evening primrose oil and horsetail acting as hero ingredients to soothe and heal irritated skin, and also restore its elasticity.

Heidi’s dry patches and rough skin on her face have really improved, and it delivers continual hydration that lasts until morning. I’ve also been using this on my elbow and knees which take a real battering crawling after the kids after day - they’re now softer than they’ve been since my teenage years. It smells of herbs, lemon and chamomile and that sugary gritty mixture dissolves to a greasy balm when rubbed into the skin.

Finally the NESSkin Therapy Support Skin Cream reminds me a little of Hope’s Relief’s offering. Grey brown in colour and unattractive to look at, it’s an ultra mild light cream that dries quickly to a matt finish. Normally I hate quick-drying creams (other than those I use on my face) as I like to feel constantly hydrated throughout the day, but this is leaves skin impossibly soft and healthy-looking.

Made with soothing chamomile, natural vitamin E and avocado oil, it sinks in with ease leaving an inoffensive tea tree scent on the skin. Heidi’s eczema is now far less red and raw-looking, and this really helped Dexter’s skin when antibiotics and industrial central heating were drying it out in hospital. I love how Phyllis has balanced moisturisation and hydration with antiseptic and astringent properties to really correct skin ailments long-term, as well as delivering instant relief from the symptoms of problem skin.

This is £19 for 200mls which edges it up into premium territory. I’m not suggesting this isn’t worth the money, but recommend investing in a sample bottle for patch testing before buying a full-sized one. The bottle could also benefit from being a little prettier given the price tag (but this is such a minor point, I feel a little silly even typing it!).

Retro Christmas Pressies from Spoilt Rotten Gifts!

Since featuring Spoilt Rotten Gifts this time last year, I’m so pleased to see this fabulous website has gone from strength to strength. Owner Nichola is just about the nicest person in the small business world and I simply love her collection of vintage, retro and intrinsically British gifts. Her handpicked selection has now grown to include some of my favourite designers including Sass Belle, Anorak, Orla Kiely and Nicky James! It perfectly suits Nichola’s eclectic style and is testament to her background in buying for the likes of John Lewis.

Spoilt Rotten Gifts is the perfect destination for unusual stocking fillers that will transport someone back to their childhood, offer a solution to something they’ve often whinged about, or for children’s gifts that are sure to be coveted well beyond the excitement of Christmas. Here are just a few of my favourite things:

Spoilt Rotten Gifts
Clockwise (left to right): VW Campervan Shaped Mug £5.99 each / Kate Garey Sausage Dog Day Bag was £55.00 now £49.50 / Wall’s Ice Cream Satchel £25.99 / Nicky James Blue Owl Satchel £25.99 / Rusty And Friends Set Of Three Suitcases £20.99 / Magpie Birdy Robin Cushion £16.99 / Disaster Designs Beatles Alarm Clock was £15.99 now £8.99 / Orla Kiely Gardening Gloves £12.99 / Sass Belle Baby Fox Cushion was £15.99 now £12.79

I was literally spoilt for choice when choosing something to review this time around. As my Craigy is a bit of geek, he’d be happy with absolutely everything on the site, and there are also some seriously scrummy baby outfits that Heidi would have looked gorgeous in. But given I’m a selfish mare, I actually treated myself. This seems to be happening far too often at the moment - the kids faces are a real sight when the postman coming knocking with parcels for mummy and not them!

Sass Belle Owl Doorstop

I plumped for this adorable Sass Belle owl doorstop in pretty green, pink and white printed fabrics. Given everyone is so ill at the moment (I’m actually writing this very post from a stuffy room on the children’s ward at the Royal Berkshire Hospital - poor Dex has been struck with bronchitis) Craig is sat at home with Heidi helping her get over her latest tooth, and airing out all the rooms. Rose the owl has therefore been tasked with the very important job of stopping doors from slamming and frightening Heidi. In fact, Heidi seems quite enamoured with Rose and loves babbling away to her.

Rose is nice and heavy and carries all her weight in her bum (don’t we all!) so sits up against doors perfectly (no laying down on the job!). The hand-stitched felt appliqué eyes, wings and feet are such a sweet little detail, and the fabrics all go together beautifully.

Rose is also performing night duties at our house and propping open the lounge stair gate at night to save mummy and daddy from nightly meltdowns. At £9.96 (reduced from £12.45) she’s a fab little Christmas gift for a vintage interior addict.

Birdy Twin bag

I also ordered a gorgeous wash bag and make-up bag from the retro Wren Birdy range. In sky blue and lemon shades and featuring a blue tit and yellow wagtail, this beautiful set of printed PVC coated canvas bags are very 70′s. Lined in nylon, they’re easy to wipe clean if you have any spillages, making them fab for the frequent traveler or make-up fiend. The cute make-up bag measures 215x140mm so is also the perfect size for popping in your handbag, to protect its lining from loose powder and rogue lipsticks.

The heart-shaped Wren zip pulls are a neat little contrast against the fabric and will withstand a fair bit of tugging when you’ve overfilled the bags. At 310x200mm you wouldn’t think you’d run out of room in the wash bag, but I’m the last person in the world who will criticise you if you do! This is currently housing all my daily lotions and potions and I love its cheerful design when I delve in every morning.

At £16.99 its such a lovely gift for a special lady and in true Mary Poppins style, they’re practically perfect in every way!

If I’ve tempted you, have a browse of Nichola’s wibbly wobbly world of Spoilt Rotten Gifts, and pop over to her website, or show her some love on Pinterest, Facebook or Twitter.
