Estée Lauder Automatic Brow Duo Review

Posted on

Those of you who have met me in person, or seen any one of the torturous number of selfies I post, will know I have the most pathetic eyebrows known to man. I was a 90′s teen which meant I went to school with over-plucked eyebrows and a healthy slather of Rimmel’s Coffee Shimmer on my lips. Old school photos make me cringe!

You might have read that I’m on a mission to grow back my eyebrows and have set a deadline of February to get them thick enough for a thread and tint. In my arsenal is Mychelle’s Ultimate Lash and Brow which is a patented Myracle Peptide enriched serum designed to stimulate the production of keratin leaving your brows fuller, thicker and longer. This is neatly doing its job in the background as I go about daily life, but it’s taking lots of willpower to leave them a shaggy mess in the meantime. The temptation to whip out the tweezers during X Factor is almost too much to bear.

So in a bid to create the allusion of structure, I’m now using Estée Lauder’s Automatic Brow Duo, and am absolutely loving it.

It’s a retractable kohl with an angled shaping brush at the other end. These are a godsend if you have children who like exploring your make-up bag; a pencil sharpener might as well be a machete in the hands of a two-year-old! It’s also dermatologist-tested, ophthalmologist-tested & fragrance-free (good to know if you have sensitive skin, but not essential given it’ll have minimum contact with your skin). You also have a spare refill cartridge, so more than a year’s worth for the £19.00 (RRP) pricetag.

The angled brush is great for blending and tidying, and strong enough to withstand a punishing grooming routine.

Application is easy - I’ve heard some people niggle that they have to press harder than they would have liked, but I don’t find this at all. I want a natural look, not to scare my friends and family turning up to their houses trussed up like Cruella de Vil! The trick is to aim for one to two shades lighter than your hair colour - the soft brown tone therefore gives me the most natural look.

To get the perfect shape would be virtually impossible for me at the moment as I have too big a gap between each brow, and have taken far too much depth out of them so they sit too high on my face. To fill in this area would look very artificial so I’ve just made the best of what I have (which isn’t much). Nevertheless, my arch is much stronger and there’s more depth and fullness to my brows - making that nose look much smaller!

Once set with a light sweep of powder, your shape will last all day, notwithstanding a session down the gym, a dip at the local pool, or a rainstorm. There’s no budging until you whip out the eye make-up remover. Perfect.

This has made me feel more confident about my self-inflicted barely-brows, and is the perfect interim measure before I’m able to get a professional on the case.

You can buy directly from the Estée Lauder website for £19.00 with free delivery (where they’ll also pop a few a samples in with your order) or pop into John Lewis, Selfridges or Boots to try before you buy. Refills cost £9.50. You can also head to Twitter and Facebook to see what’s new and read more customer reviews.

If anyone else is in the same boat as me, I have a discount code entitling my readers to 30% off Mychelle’s Ultimate Lash and Brow Serum until the 28/11/2014 – just enter MILLS30 at the checkout

Getting Ready for C-Day with Christmas Boutique

Posted on

Last year’s Christmas was really quite terrible. We had only just moved house, the whole household was sick and I was heavily pregnant. It was embarrassingly quiet and I spent the entire day growling at Craig for flaunting alcohol in my face.

This year we’re determined to make a real fuss. I’ve got my eye on the biggest tree imaginable and am looking forward to the annual row about how to squeeze it into the house. The year before last, our tree spent 2 whole days in our bath as our holder wasn’t up to the job! I’ll also be bringing out the usual tat and decorating our windows, front door and every other visible surface in our home with a little Christmas cheer. Thankfully the lovely guys at TheChristmasBoutique.co.uk have sent us some altogether more stylish bits to stop me bankrupting us on grottoesque accessories.

Here are the truly fabulous things we were sent!

This pair of heart shaped cut-out wooden & glass lanterns are huge and create a lovely ambiance on your dining room table, or indeed outside on verandas and decking. Made from real wood and glass, the rustic finish makes every pair unique and exquisitely shabby-chic. They’re plenty big enough to create a real statement measuring 18cm x 13.cm & 26cm x 20cm.

They have a metal base and no top for safety purposes, but the glass sides do a great job of protecting your pillar candles from blowing out in harsh weather. Each lantern has a tiny catch which opens up one side - this allows you to safely deposit lit candles into the lantern without risk of burning fingers.

The pair are priced at £39.99 which seems fair for 2 quality all-year-round lanterns. For me, this is best way to shop for Christmas bits - buy gorgeous things that will brighten up you home for 12 months, not just 1!

We were also sent a set of 4 metallic peach heart shaped Christmas tree baubles that I’ve fallen in love with. I plan on teaming these with silver and gold baubles to create a seriously contemporary tree this year. I hate tinsel so will be over-accessorising with baubles and white static LED lights to create a serene and stylish centerpiece for our lounge.

These are strong and robust glass baubles with gold and silver glitter detail which catch the light beautifully! Also available in pink and red, they cost £9.99 for a set of 4.

This very sweet metal stag’s head Christmas bell with antique silver finish also found its way into my mailer. In my opinion no Christmas dinner table is complete without a traditional hand bell so I just love this little guy. It makes a fabulous loud metal chime when shaken to signal to hubby that more wine is needed, and looks like it should be gracing the set of Downton Abbey.

It’s not a huge bell so won’t dominate your dining table, but this just means it’s easier to hide behind the potato serving dish so daddy can’t find it. I can see Dexter and I having tons of fun with this getting Craig to run around the kitchen like hired help! He’s a tiny £6.99 so well worth the money if you’re planning to act like a lady of the manor this Christmas.

I simply love these paper pom poms too. I’ve been after these for ages for Heidi’s room.

Okay okay, so they’re going to be a permanent fixture not just for Christmas. But it’s not really cheating, is it? They just add a bit of interest to her ceiling above her cot and she’s utterly mesmerized by them.

They come in packs of three in tiny flat bundles. I did worry they’d be a pain to make but it took seconds. You simply fan them out and secure them with a paperclip (provided). From opening the packets to pinning them on her ceiling it took all of 5 minutes! These are an utter bargain at £6.99 per pack of 3 - we’ll certainly be buying more as Dexter needs some in his now he’s seen his baby sister’s.

Here are just a few of my other favourite things from the site!

(Left to right:) Wall Mountable Antique White Finish Stag’s or Deer Head £29.99 / Set of Three Heart Shaped Aluminum Hanging Christmas Decorations for the Home £16.99 / Large Polished Aluminum Standing Deer Stag Ornament £54.99 (other sizes available) / A Pair Of Gold Coloured Bird in Hat Christmas Ornaments £6.50 / Rams or Stags Head Cork Bottle Stopper in Silver Coloured Finish £5.99 / Large Natural Pine Cone & Leaf Design Christmas Wreath £26.99 / Set of Two Wooden Star Christmas Serving Trays £24.99/ Set of Two Natural Linen Christmas Stockings with Stag Designs £14.99 / Festive Windlight Tealight Candle Holder (Angel or Star) £7.99

I’m chuffed to bits with the things we were sent and can’t thank them enough for getting Christmas off to a cracking start. The quality is really quite brilliant and they’re also a year round store so you’re bound to bag some more bargains in the New Year, or in March, or maybe July…

Every Friday up until Christmas you can be in with the chance of winning a beautiful decoration from The Christmas Boutique by simply entering HERE. They’re also an active bunch on Facebook and Twitter with plenty of spot giveaways to keep us all in the Christmas spirit.

Darlo ethical baby clothes: Helping malnourished children worldwide

Posted on

I spotted Darlo on Twitter a few weeks ago and felt instantly compelled to get in touch. I love ethical, fairtrade and organic baby products - especially when they’re sensibly priced and accessible to parents with less means. All too often we see brands on a mission to save the environment, the poor and the disaster-stricken, yet charging £20 for a body cream, or £30 for a sleepsuit - as much as we believe in the cause, it’s simply not feasible to remortgage the house to help.

Darlo’s mission is to help malnourished children globally. Right now their core focus is India, and with every product purchased from their adorable baby clothes collection they’ll provide at LEAST one whole week’s worth of meals for a child in India. It’s simple, affordable and there’s no guilt-tripping going on here; just a very cute range of colourful organic baby lounge-wear with a conscience.

Darlo Comfies

From vests, to sleepsuits, to adorable jogging bottoms, they have everything baby needs to chill out at home or snuggle up in bed. The muted palette is perfect for trendy boys and girls, and every skin tone. I plumped for coral and mint for Heidi and think she looks absolutely adorable.

At the moment, most styles are available in 0-3 months or 3-6 months, but the clothes are VERY generously sized. At 7 months, Heidi’s 3-6 month outfit still has plenty of growing room. Here she is modelling a pair of comfies (an organic cotton vest, pair of joggers, and a dribble catcher bib £29.99 - vest and joggers also sold separately for £11.99 and 13.99 respectively).

Heidi Darlo

These have washed beautifully at 30 degrees and are exactly as soft as you would expect from an organic brand. Regular readers will know just how sensitive poor Heidi’s skin is, so given there are no nasty pesticides or chemicals used in Darlo’s clothes, it’s the perfect outfit to whack her in if she’s experiencing a flare up - it soothes her irritated skin and stops her itching.

There are also no inside labels to chafe her skin, and the branding on the neck of her vest and on her butt is super cute. There are faux pockets and a sweet drawstring waist on the joggers too; lovely little details that epitomise the love and care that have gone into each dinky outfit.

Darlo Branding

The pure cotton is produced by cotton farmers in India so brings in wages for the impoverished, who in turn, receive a fair wage and work in clean and safe factories. Darlo are also keen to stress that absolutely no child labour is used in any part of production process. This project isn’t about lining pockets, it’s about bringing hope to those in need.

With Christmas coming up, Band Aid in full flow, the ebola epidemic claiming lives, and Children in Need tugging at our heart strings, sometimes you just need to take a step back and realise how lucky you are. I promised myself I wasn’t going to rave on about the cause, so I’ll leave it at that. But if you are a grandparent, parent, aunty or uncle who’s been tasked with buying sleepwear this Christmas, do pop over to Darlo and consider a purchase.

To find out more, you can say hello on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram - they’re a really nice bunch and would really appreciate your support.
