Heidi is teething. Uncontrollably in fact. It’s been a real wake up call for us as Dexter’s teeth seemed to come through with ease overnight, whereas every single one of Heidi’s seems to be accompanied by a cacophony of misery & insomnia. She’s now sporting a rather nifty baltic amber necklace, but her the necks of her tees are still absolutely soaked and she’ll regularly bite into my shoulder, finger, boob… & whatever other bodily part she can get ahold of.

I’ll try anything when it comes to teething, medicinal or otherwise. When you have a baby who wakes some 3 times a night (often with night-terrors) you spend a fortune hoping for a breakthrough and a decent nights kip.

MombellaTeethingOctopus

Straightaway Mömbella’s Octopus Teething Toy looked intriguing. Made from 100% eco-friendly food-grade silicine (and free from BPAs, Phthalates, lead, cadmium, lead, latex or any harmful toxins), this little fella promises to see your little one right through to a full set of gnashers. He’s tough enough to withstand some major chomping and will survive all the trips to the freezer you can throw at him should your LO need extra cooling comfort. He’s also colourfast and dishwasher and microwave safe for sterilising.

Mömbella is a father-owned company established in 2013 by David Guan. As a young dad he searched high & low for a teething toy that would soothe his baby. Yet all the teethers he tried were either too hard to be gnawed on, or too boring to sustain baby’s interest. With a decade’s worth of experience in bringing new baby products to the market, he joined forces with a Pediatric specialist, & set about making these rather funky silicone octopuses.

Octopus Doo is a hollow, light and soft silicone toy perfect for early teethers from 3ms+. Ergonomically this is much easier for baby to handle than traditional teethers, with each tentacle soft, flexible and textured. Better yet, each of these tentacles double as a silicone toothbrush to gently soothe, massage and clean baby’s gums. Safety-wise, this has also been specifically designed so baby can chew away to her heart’s content yet no part of the toy can get far enough inside baby’s mouth to become a choking hazard.

MombellaOctopus

There’s so much here texture-wise - from the nodules on either side of his tentacles (bumpy on top, with malleable spikes to the underside), to Doo’s ribbed hollow hat. The protruding bow on his hat, and his mouth are also chewable for more skilled and practiced teethers. In this respect, the toy will also promote fine finger dexterity as your child explores all its lumps and bumps.

MombellaTeether

At 15 months going on 15 years, I wasn’t sure how Heidi would take to Doo, and I was pleasantly surprised to watch her chomp away on his tentacles. She also seems to enjoy squeezing the life out of his neck and rolling his tentacles between her fingers. She doesn’t actively search him out when she is suffering, but she does grab at him when we offer him to her. What is usually a meltdown of epic proportions becomes a silent gnaw-fest which we’re only too happy to let her crack on with. We’ve also found Doo particularly helpful at night as she’ll suck on his tentacles and self-soothe back to sleep.

Manufactured in China, they’re available to buy here in the UK in four bright and vibrant colours via Amazon for £13.88 each. To get a closer look at the rest of the range visit Mömbella.co.uk or check out their social media channels below.

GIVEAWAY & REVIEW: Win Rock of Feather Designer Teething Jewellery (CD 19/06/2015)

Teething really is the pits. Your baby’s senses swoop into overdrive making it a particularly distressing time for both mum and baby. Baby will scream, struggle with sleep, writhe around and refuse milk. Worse still, teething manifests itself in psychical symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting so anxious new mums can feel like they’re fighting a losing battle. It’s one thing to stockpile teething gels, cold toys and Calpol, but these aren’t easy to administer and aren’t always effective.

My weapon of choice is silicone teething jewellery. Heidi enjoys chomping on it when her gums are swollen and the dreaded new toothy pegs pierce through - which feels like every other day at the moment!. Not just for babies however, Dexter (3 years) also loves wearing my necklaces and, given he still has the odd suck on them, it’s good to know that any beads are BPA ,Phthalates and PVC free, and therefore perfectly safe for him to pop in his mouth.

But let’s face it - as convenient as it is, if silicone jewellery isn’t attractive, it’s pretty useless. I’ll admit it took me awhile to get onboard with the trend as early designs were, for me, a little dull and uninspiring. Now however there are some stunning designs out there - stylish pieces that coordinate with your outfits, make a statement and invite comments from other mums.

… Rock of Feather are the perfect example of this.

ROFFounders

Our jewellery range stands for practicality, safety and baby wellbeing because, let’s face it, it has to. But that doesn’t mean we stand for being mumsy. We believe that mothers are individuals too. People who, dare we say it, might like to look cool now and again. Rock of Feather simply bridges the gap and combines the two. Founders of Rock of Feather Amelia and Natasha

ROFLifestyle

New kids on the teething jewellery scene, Rock of Feather offer timeless easy-to-wear jewellery in bright and versatile palettes. There’s something for every occasion and style; from the office to evenings out - not simply for when you have a mini person hanging around your neck! Team any of these chunky oversized pieces with jeans and tees to liven up an otherwise dull outfit, or pair with an evening dress for a pop of colour that makes a real statement.

Yet not just for mum - bright colourways also mean baby is able to route them out with ease when teething strikes. Oversized beads and vibrant colours also help sustain babies interest and focus their attention when pain plays havoc with their senses. I’m also pleased to see Rock of Feather necklaces are adjustable in length so you can wear them long (just beneath your boobs) so baby can self-soothe whilst having a cuddle with mum - let’s face it, we all need one of those when we’re feeling poorly! There’s also a clever hidden safety catch that will pop open when tugged. This is a fab idea if your little one gets a little too rough when having a chew.

Hummingbird Bracelet (Rose Quartz) £15 / Mockingbird Necklace (Turquoise) £24 / Turtle Dove Pendant (Onyx) £15 / Quetzal Bracelet (Turquoise) £12 / Nightjar Necklace (Oynx & Granite) £26 / Kittiwake Necklace (Cream Jasper and Granite) £24

Heidi presently has six teeth and is downright dangerous with them! Having access to a teething necklace means she’s less likely to bite me so I’m very happy she’s taken so well to my new Kittiwake necklace. It dangles and captures the light beautifully, is lightly textured, and is perfectly positioned for Heidi to enjoy when I’m cradling her to my chest. What’s more, despite being given a daily chew by Heidi, a quick wipe with soapy water and it looks as stunning as it did when I first received it.

The subtle whites and beige hues look great with the majority of my wardrobe. Contrasted against darker vests it really pops out and takes attention away from the bits of me I’m not so happy with!

Each item of Rock of Feather jewellery is beautifully gift-wrapped. A sweet little pouch makes it a really thoughtful gift for a new mum, or indeed a really unique christening pressie. Not limited to parents however, they’d also be perfect for boisterous teens who seem to break everything you give them! Silicone jewellery really is the way forward for the style-conscious woman, and I’d wholeheartedly recommend it.

When is teething jewellery not just teething jewellery? A Mama Jewels Review

Posted on

Mama Jewels LOGO SC 2014 copy

Teething jewellery is big business. One swoop around a baby & toddler exhibition and you see dozens of brands competing for floor space. Ask any mother with a baby and it’s easy to see why they’re so popular. I can’t count the number of pendants and bracelets my two children have broken trying to gnaw their way through the silver. Jewellery dangles, it catches the light, and it’s perfectly positioned for a quick chomp when you’re cradling them to your chest.

IMG_2960

Teething jewellery is typically made from silicone or wood, designed to be non-toxic and able to withstand plenty of tugging and gnawing. Design-wise many brands offer the same stale pendants and colourways and there isn’t much for mum to get excited about. This, of course, is until they stumble upon Mama Jewels…

I looked around the baby group and realised that most of the mums, like me had stopped wearing jewellery, when I asked why they said ‘Our children keep breaking our jewellery so we just had to stop wearing it’ That was the moment I decided to use my jewellery design skills to create a necklace that a baby can’t break, can be washed, and is completely non-toxic for when babies chomp on it, but still looks gorgeous. Mama Jewels was born! Amanda Waring, Founder Mama Jewels

MamaJewels

If it hadn’t been Mama Jewels I wouldn’t have consented to a teething jewellery review. I find the 70s circular pendants really quite boring and uninspiring and can’t imagine Heidi being that impressed either. But Mama Jewels really is different, with dozens of beautiful designs that the untrained eye wouldn’t even realise were built with babies in mind.

Add to this Papa Jewels and Mini Jewels (with baby-safe chains and no-break guarantee) and baby is literally spoilt for choice for a spot of relief from the agony of teething pain.

MamaJewels2

To be honest, I can’t imagine an adult equivalent to teething. Even if we were to experience a similar pain, the fact your baby doesn’t understand why their senses are in overdrive makes for a particularly distressing time. Not only will babies often writhe around, refuse food and scream, teething also manifests itself in psychical symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting. Aside from administering teething gels, cold toys and Calpol, mum and dad are left twiddling their thumbs watching their baby suffer.

Teething jewellery might seem like just another teether device, but they’re so much more. Due to the proximity of the jewellery to mum (or indeed dad) they allow baby to self-soothe whilst being held. This means during periods of extreme distress, it’s far easier to settle your little one.

MamaJewels3

I have the Anthropologist necklace in purple and brown hues and absolutely LOVE it. It goes with the majority of my outfits and Heidi is in heaven as she selects a bead to chew. There are wooden hive-like beads that are ribbed for extra texture, smooth pebble beads, and octagonal shaped beads too. This means plenty of interest for both mum and baby. Better yet, it has a leather thong chain for practicing finer bites.

Heidi chews on it at every opportunity and it’s certainly taken a battering. She now has all four front teeth (top and bottom) and she’s downright dangerous with them. Trust me, if you put your finger in her mouth, you might ever get it back out again! Yet my necklace still looks as good as new. This is quite some feat when you consider the state of her teething toys downstairs - let’s just say it’s very easy to spot her favorites!

My necklace is a very reasonable £19.95 and worth every penny, I plan on buying a few more colourways purely to complement other outfits but can honestly say I choose well when asked to pick one for review. It’s beautiful.

I’m not alone in my praise for Mama Jewels with them also grabbing headlines in Baby & Me, Gurgle Magazine, Baby London, The Daily Mail, The Telegraph and appearing on a This Morning feature. Not limited to nursing and teething jewellery, they also make some silver keepsakes items, baby-proof jewellery and sweet breastfeeding reminder bracelets so mum knows which breast is next.
