Heidi is teething. Uncontrollably in fact. It’s been a real wake up call for us as Dexter’s teeth seemed to come through with ease overnight, whereas every single one of Heidi’s seems to be accompanied by a cacophony of misery & insomnia. She’s now sporting a rather nifty baltic amber necklace, but her the necks of her tees are still absolutely soaked and she’ll regularly bite into my shoulder, finger, boob… & whatever other bodily part she can get ahold of.

I’ll try anything when it comes to teething, medicinal or otherwise. When you have a baby who wakes some 3 times a night (often with night-terrors) you spend a fortune hoping for a breakthrough and a decent nights kip.

Straightaway Mömbella’s Octopus Teething Toy looked intriguing. Made from 100% eco-friendly food-grade silicine (and free from BPAs, Phthalates, lead, cadmium, lead, latex or any harmful toxins), this little fella promises to see your little one right through to a full set of gnashers. He’s tough enough to withstand some major chomping and will survive all the trips to the freezer you can throw at him should your LO need extra cooling comfort. He’s also colourfast and dishwasher and microwave safe for sterilising.

Mömbella is a father-owned company established in 2013 by David Guan. As a young dad he searched high & low for a teething toy that would soothe his baby. Yet all the teethers he tried were either too hard to be gnawed on, or too boring to sustain baby’s interest. With a decade’s worth of experience in bringing new baby products to the market, he joined forces with a Pediatric specialist, & set about making these rather funky silicone octopuses.

Octopus Doo is a hollow, light and soft silicone toy perfect for early teethers from 3ms+. Ergonomically this is much easier for baby to handle than traditional teethers, with each tentacle soft, flexible and textured. Better yet, each of these tentacles double as a silicone toothbrush to gently soothe, massage and clean baby’s gums. Safety-wise, this has also been specifically designed so baby can chew away to her heart’s content yet no part of the toy can get far enough inside baby’s mouth to become a choking hazard.

There’s so much here texture-wise - from the nodules on either side of his tentacles (bumpy on top, with malleable spikes to the underside), to Doo’s ribbed hollow hat. The protruding bow on his hat, and his mouth are also chewable for more skilled and practiced teethers. In this respect, the toy will also promote fine finger dexterity as your child explores all its lumps and bumps.

At 15 months going on 15 years, I wasn’t sure how Heidi would take to Doo, and I was pleasantly surprised to watch her chomp away on his tentacles. She also seems to enjoy squeezing the life out of his neck and rolling his tentacles between her fingers. She doesn’t actively search him out when she is suffering, but she does grab at him when we offer him to her. What is usually a meltdown of epic proportions becomes a silent gnaw-fest which we’re only too happy to let her crack on with. We’ve also found Doo particularly helpful at night as she’ll suck on his tentacles and self-soothe back to sleep.

Manufactured in China, they’re available to buy here in the UK in four bright and vibrant colours via Amazon for £13.88 each. To get a closer look at the rest of the range visit Mömbella.co.uk or check out their social media channels below.

GIVEAWAY AND REVIEW: Introducing the Genius Neckerchew by Cheeky Chompers! (CD 12/07/2013)

Posted on

Prepare to go “Wow” and “Genius Idea” exactly like I did when I clapped eyes on this seriously neat little product. I give you… the Neckerchew - The world’s first chewy dribble bib for teething tots from Cheeky Chompers!

Dear Baby,
“Here’s a chewy dribble bib
made with love for you
to help catch all your dribble
when your toothy pegs break through
A must have in your wardrobe
cool and stylish either way…
and the special squidgy endy bit
helps soothe the pain away!”

I discovered the Neckerchew when I wrote a bumper post in anticipation of the February ExCel Baby Show in London. I was really intrigued by the concept and excited to see the execution.

The dribble bib itself is nothing new with hundreds of different brands jumping on the neckerchief bandwagon. They look lovely and are a much classier extension of a babies wardrobe than their traditional terry cloth round-necked cousins. So often however you discover they’re poorly sized with velcro fastenings that irritate babies neck.

In fact, Dexie outgrew many of his dribble bibs after just a few months. The Neckerchew is the only bib that has stood the test of time and still fits him great at 13 months. Although Dexie isn’t particularly dribbly and has, until now, coped really admirably with his teething, this past week he really has struggled with a couple of break-through molars. Along with Bonjela and Calpol, the Neckerchew has been absolutely invaluable for easing some of the discomfort.

Dexie has a tendency to tug at his bibs, pull them off, and hide them among his toys. This is partly because he finds them too tight around his neck and doesn’t enjoy the fact they obstruct his arms when commando crawling across the lounge. The Neckerchew is fantastic for this as it’s very generous around the neck and adjustable with two popper settings. The poppers themselves are high quality plastic and wash well so they don’t become loose over time. It is in fact the only bib Dexter doesn’t sneakily stuff inside his shape-sorter when my back is turned - it really is in a league of its own.

To further prevent irritation, the Neckerchew is also super absorbent with an inner material that retains the majority of the moisture. This helps prevent any dampness getting onto babies chest. This makes it ideal for super dribbly babies and lazy swallowers at juice time.

The Neckerchew is also reversible so it’s effectively two bibs in one. This means it offers parents a choice of which colourway best compliments a childs outfit, but also that you turn it inside out if your child gets one side grubby whilst you’re out and about. Dex has the blue twinkle twinkle design (see below) which looks great over white, with a plain dark blue reverse for busy outfits.

But what really makes these bibs stand out is, of course, the integrated teether. The textured silicon end means that babies always have a teether to hand for when their teeth begin to ache. There’s no more searching down the arms of your sofa (or somewhere equally dirty) to find a something for them to gnaw on, and there is no need for them to toss it away when they’ve had enough. In terms of teething hygiene it’s therefore fabulous. I’ve also caught him sucking on it when he’s tired on car journeys so I know he finds it soothing.

It really is an incredibly well thought-out product - there isn’t one suggestion I’d make to improve it. Priced at between £9.99 and £11.99 (depending on design) it’s great value too. If you’d like to check out what other mums are saying about the product, head on over to www..cheekychompers.com, or check out the latest news and reviews on their Facebook and Twitter feed.
