All Snuggled UP: A Love to Swaddle UP Review

Posted on

Okay, Heidi isn’t the most cheerful of babies. In fact, if she’s not asleep, she’s crying. Her brother (Dexter) might have learned to tune this out, but it’s well known that a mother’s brain responds differently to a crying baby. Although I like to think both Craig and I are really patient people, but after two full hours of Heidi’s cries, it’s very easy to get frustrated.

The one thing that has worked for Heidi that didn’t for Dexter, is swaddling. I put this down to the fact I’ve tried harder to breastfeed Heidi than I did Dex, and where is hasn’t gone to plan, she’s probably a bit miffed she isn’t held as closely as she used to be.

So when we kitted out her out with the Love to Swaddle UP sleepbag, the results were pretty spectacular. Brain-child of the Love to Dream family, this sleepsuit has been my star product since Heidi’s arrived.

What Love to Dream say:

The Love to Swaddle UP keeps newborns snug and secure without restricting movement or making them too warm. The unique “wing” design helps babies to sleep in a natural ‘arms up’ position, prevents scratching and calms the startle reflex

First things first, when Heidi is in it she resembles a little grey slug. Inevitably she does still try to suck her fingers but quickly drops the idea when she figures out her fingers aren’t quite so tasty when encased in cotton. 040

This aside she is so peaceful in her Love to Swaddle UP. It keeps her on her back which is great as otherwise she has a tendency to sleep on her side (which I’m all too aware is one fidget away from rolling onto her tummy). The fact that it ensures she’s completely covered also means I’m not worrying she’s kicked off her blanket in the night and might get cold.

The sleepsuit is also packed full of clever features. The attention to detail is really impressive and I love the concealed zip hood under her chin to prevent the zip from irritating her skin. Similarly, the Love to Swaddle UP is also entirely seam-free on the inside so there’s no danger of a cold zip coming into contact with her delicate skin. The two way zip is also invaluable for bum changes when she’s asleep - I spend so long cradling her to sleep that I hate the thought of undoing all that effort by changing her when she’s nearly there.

Style-wise I actually really like the simplicity of it. I hate busy patterns and character fabric so the simple grey (with grey piping around the seams) is much more to my taste. Also available in pink, blue, cream and white it’s lovely and clean-looking. The cotton material is also unbelievably soft and shows no signs of bobbling at all. If your baby has sensitive skin there’s also a Organic version.

The best thing by far is the fit. Heidi might have long legs but she’s actually really dinky. At just 7lbs she’s really skinny and looks a little like Mr Burns from The Simpsons with tons of baggy skin and frail little bones. The Love to Swaddle UP has lots of leg room but is really snug around her body compared to other sleeping bags I’ve tried. This means it keeps its shape whilst Heidi sleeps and there’s no rolls of uncomfortable fabric behind her back. By keeping her so compact it also simulates the womb and promotes prolonged sleep.

Whilst I’m discussing how snug it is, it’s worth pointing out that the Stage 1 Love to Swaddle UP is recommended for baby’s aged newborn to 4 months (or up to 11lbs). I have no reason at all to doubt this will be the case for Heidi-bum as she’s so dinky, but I would question whether a 10lb baby who is gaining weight steadily would fit in the bag up until 4 months. The Love to Swaddle UP is supposed to be worn snugly but not tight.

My only other niggle would be the recommendation that you need two of the Love to Swaddle UPs in your nursery drawer. Heidi has been in hers for almost 3 weeks now and it still smells, looks and feels amazing. Okay, she may well be in less layers of additional clothing (so there’s more risk of accidents) as the weather get nicer, but for winter babies I wouldn’t bother.

You can get yours from Cheeky Rascals where the Original version (as reviewed here) is just £19.99 (the Organic version is £25). This is incredible value for money. I’ve reviewed several premium products on this blog and have had my mitts on several sleepbags that are 3x this amount and are nowhere near the quality of the Love to Swaddle UP. When baby is ready to move onto the next stage (4-8 months) there’s also the Stage 2 Love to Swaddle UP* priced at £25. Finally, there’s the newborn Lite version for the warmer weather priced at £21.99.

You can find out more about the Love to Dream range on the Cheeky Rascals website where there are also several videos and FAQs about the brand. If you haven’t heard of Cheeky Rascals before, where have you been?! Cheeky Rascals have won numerous parenting awards as a result of their commitment to partner with the very best pregnancy, baby and toddler brands on the market. They’re incredibly selective about who they endorse and it shows. There are too many cool products to list here but you can visit the site homepage for more information or say hello on Twitter and Facebook.

*Note that the Love to Swaddle UP is only recommended for babies who cannot roll onto their tummies. It is strongly recommended you do NOT use these products when they are able to do so.

Disclaimer: I was sent two Love to Swaddle UPs by Cheeky Rascals in exchange for my thoughts. They’ve been waiting incredibly patiently for baby Heidi to arrive but this has not influenced my opinion in any way. All the work you see featured on this Love to Swaddle UP review is my own.

Review: Proviz Buggy Lights from Cheeky Rascals

I was recently fortunate enough to get a sneak preview of the Silvercross Reflex and intrigued by the integrated buggy lights. It seemed like a great idea, but Dexter and I rarely venture out in the dark, or even dusk. But with this unpredictable weather we’ve been experiencing, even a brief stroll to the shops can get pretty dark if the sky is overcast.

Proviz Buggy Lights from Cheeky Lights

In fact, buggy lights are a great idea. The idea is to ensure your pram, buggy or pushchair can be seen by cars, cyclists and even runners, when visibility is otherwise poor. This can include early mornings when you’re on the nursery run and the sun is struggling as much as you are to make a good impression!

When nursery experts Cheeky Rascals offered to send me some Proviz Buggy Lights, I couldn’t wait to pimp up our dirty Maclaren. This pushchair seriously needs exchanging for a twin now that Dexter is soon to be joined by his sister, so I wanted something that fits all frames and is easily clipped on and off. The Proviz Buggy Lights are simply perfect for this.

Proviz Bluggy Lights Close Up

Easy peasy to attach, you simply loop them onto the frame of your buggy or pram, and secure using the plastic clip. Given the flexible fitting, they’ll fit the majority of, if not all, brands of pushchairs and can be attached in limited light if you’re popping them on at the last minute. There’s also no reason at all you can’t pop them on watch or rucksack straps for older children too. They’re small and unobtrusive yet omit a strong LED light that can be seen up to 150 metres away. To turn them on you simply press the bulb. Press once for flashing, twice for full beam and three times to turn off.

On a separate note, the buggy lights act as great little beacons for waddling toddlers who are apt to stray off course. As we live in a quiet cul-de-sac, these work a treat on Dexter who has recently taken up grand theft auto and wanders towards parked cars and vans to check their doors are locked. On a recent dusk-time trip home from the park I noticed he kept seeking out the lights on his buggy and was nervous to amble more than 3 metres from them - great for keeping my little guy from investigating people’s driveways!!!

The Proviz Buggy Lights from Cheeky Rascals are available for a tiny £9.99 per pack of two (both with white LED lights and two CR2032 3V Lithium batteries included) in black, red or white flexible casings. The battery life depends on how they used, but the bulbs are easily replaceable if needs be. There’s absolutely nothing that could improve them, and I’d go so far as to say these are an essential accessory for any buggy-wielding parent - you can’t be careful enough on those roads.

We received these buggy lights (and more besides) from the fabulous guys at Cheeky Rascals in exchange for my thoughts. More reviews coming up!

Countdown to The Baby Show (February 21-23 at London ExCel) and a Chance to Win Tickets!

Baby-Show-Excel-2014

Well if you didn’t know it already, I’m The Baby Show Blogger for 2014′s ExCel leg in February (21-23). I’ve been busy sharing my pregnancy journey on their blog and am hugely excited about the upcoming show.

We’ve been Baby Show regulars for the past few years now. I love seeing new products and brands before anyone else, and get enough of the special show prices. The facilities are always so amazing - Tommee Tippee never fail to create the perfect breastfeeding area away from the melee of the main exhibition, and who better than Fisher Price to kit out and sponsor the crèche area??? The result is a buzzing shopping environment that caters for busy mums and dads, whilst still providing everything you need to help deal with toddler meltdowns and newborn accidents. The changing area is always clean and tidy with staff on hand to dish out the nappies and wipes, and there’s always plenty of places to sit down, rest and take stock.

The Baby Show1

This year, I’ve got an extra special reason for attending. Aside from our blog partnership, we have a little girl growing all-too-quickly inside of me, and we’re incredibly unprepared! There are soooo many things we need, that I simply can not wait to hit the stalls!

Here are the brands I can’t wait to take a closer look at:

BabaBing!

I’m really looking forward to getting up close and personal with the sleek and minimalist LoBo Plum Bouncer and weighing up how the Noah highchair compares to the Stokke Tripp Trapp. I love the look and design of these products and am really excited at the prospect of having a good old play.

Bebecar

For traditional prams Bebecar are the Rolls Royce of baby wheels. I can’t get enough of their vintage style and simply need to test drive one!

iCandy

As I’ve been helpfully informed that I’ll need a twin pushchair for my two babies (I have my Facebook readers to thank for this - it seems I had my head in the clouds and was over-estimating Dexter’s walking abilities). So I’ve been eying up the Peach Blossom 2 (in stylish and gender neutral Silver Mint) for awhile now. It’s the only twin I’ve seen that looks compact enough that I won’t be barging the elderly off the path and into oncoming traffic!

iCandy Peach Blossom 2

Masiel Bebe

Ooooh these dresses are too pretty for words. They’re exactly the traditional / nautical / Spanish twist I want to dress Mini Madam in. I’m seriously looking forward to going all gooey-eyed at them

Nappy Cakes by Betty

A humble little nappy cake business that deserves to be far bigger. Betty so lovingly makes these impressive nappy cakes and they look to be something incredibly special. She thinks of EVERYTHING - from an exhaustive list of ‘ingredients’ to leaflets on Strep B (an illness that I have firsthand experience of through Dexter). Can’t wait to see these pieces of art for myself!

Oyster Baby Slings - Slumber-Roo

Oooohhh let me at them!!! So gorgeous, so simple, and exactly the way I’m hoping to carry my little madam when she arrives in April.

OysterBaby

Of course, I’m also looking forward to seeing my friends BRITAX (and BOB), and Tommee Tippee, Cuddledry, Funky Giraffe Bibs and Pumpkin Patch. These are the brands I trust the most and never fail to disappoint me. This year (aside from those mentioned above) Chicco and Cheeky Rascals are also key sponsors so expect generously proportioned stalls for these guys and an abundance of products to browse, staff to advice you, and fabulous offers especially for the show.
