The Ultimate Summer Driving Playlist

Posted on

I’m forever sneakily turning up the volume in our hideously old Ford Focus. I don’t drive myself so I always have my hands free to cause a nuisance. Craig is ancient (42 - so far too old to embrace his inner boy racer) and is always turning it back down again. I don’t think it’s because it distracts him, I’m pretty sure it’s because he hates my music. I can sort of appreciate where he’s coming from - it’s the very definition of demasculinisation to be sat at traffic lights with your windows down, and One Direction blaring from tin-like speakers.

Okay, okay - boy bands aside, music in the car is essential. It could even give your tot the opportunity to work to pick up new skills. Don’t believe me? Watch perhaps the coolest Youtube clip ever below to see this 3-year-old putting Justin Bieber to shame.

All joking aside, research by THINK! suggests that almost 20% of accidents on major roads are sleep or tiredness related. Long journeys on motorways can lead to a lack of concentration and, as well as other preventative measures, listening to songs you love can be a great way to stay alert and focused on the road.

So Money Supermarket have set us the challenge to come up with the ultimate summer driving playlist to keep daddy from nodding off at the wheel. Dexter and I were only too happy to take part. Dexter is a champion babbler and head-nodder already, and I have a singing voice that used to make my brother scream in protest when we were kids.

So without further ado - I give you my summer playlist!

On the way there… wherever there might be!

U2 - Beautiful Day

It’s just iconic right? Forget about the fact he’s a peace sign waving pompous arse. Forget about the fact he’s incapable of giving an interview without ramming the African plight down out throats then fails to pay his own taxes to Ireland. In the words of Charlie Brooker “I agree with what he’s saying - I just wish HE wasn’t saying it. How can I open my wallet while my fists are curled with rage?” - Despite all this, NOTHING gets you more in the mood to wind down those windows.

Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines ft. T.I., Pharrell

I’ll probably be bored with this in a few weeks, but right now, I love it. It amuses me even more that Thicke is actually an aging hair flicking Rick Astley-type.

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince - Summertime

Will Smith will never get old in my book. I defy anyone to hate this song - it IS summer.

Rod Stewart - Maggie May

I ‘still would’ Rod. You might be 100 yrs older than my own dad, but I ‘still would’.

Roger Sanchez - If I Had Another Chance

This song reminds me of my school days. There’s a great bit mid-song that just dares you to thump the dashboard in appreciation.

The Smiths - This Charming Man

See! I can do ‘cool’. LOVE this song! It’s also very appropriate if you’ve had a fight with your other half about not having anything to wear. Songs sound even better when you’re screaming them at someone.

On the way home…

Regina Specktor - Us

Underrated. ‘Contagious’. Brilliant.

The Lumineers - Hey Ho

Dexter loves this. It’s a great clap-along song & brings people together. After a messy night out this is guaranteed to calm you down and get you squeezing your man’s thigh (that’ll definitely keep him awake!).

Radical Face - Welcome Home

Best known as the song from the Nikon advert, it’s actually a very mellow and anthemic song. It’s impossible not to sing it in an accent either - go on, try it.

The XX - Angels

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love this song. It’s ghostly, atmospheric and beautiful.

Feeling the Pinch - The Downside to Being a SAHM

t1larg.stay.at.home.mom

I knew when I decided not to return to work that our lifestyle would be very different to how it was before I had Dexter. There would be no more nights of drunken debauchery or shopping sprees, and we’d have to work doubly hard if we wanted any treats.

There’s no denying that money is tight here at Chez Mills at the moment. Lots of bills have gone out this month leaving precious little for Craig and I to play with. Given we’re dead set on the Australia move, we’re having to save every penny we have for legal fees. We’ll also have to use a car financing company when we’re out there too as our car simply isn’t worth taking over there with us. Couple this with the fact we’ll have to sell everything here in the UK and have to furnish a home from scratch over there, and it’s truly headache-inducing.

With all this going on, our kitchen is a bit ‘Old Mother Hubbarb’ (as in nothing in the cupboard). Breakfast and lunch is now toast and a cup a soup, I’m mending old clothes, and I’ve dusted down old cleansers and make-up that are at least 7 years old in a bid to save the pennies! Don’t get me wrong, Craig works hard and earns good money. We have a roof over our heads, and we still manage the odd treat, but tightening your belt is never much fun and we don’t appear to be getting anywhere quickly. With our holiday budget dissipating, I’m dreading something breaking that will need replacing.

I think the next thing to go will be our washing machine. It’s one of those with a digital display that counts down to the end of a cycle, and it seems to get stuck on 47 minutes every time we do a load. A good kick usually sorts it out, but it’s only a matter of time before it gets fed up of being abused and packs in completely.

Craig’s work van will also need upgrading soon. As he’s a courier he does approximately 35,000 miles a year and likes replacing them every 3 years. With no money put aside we’ll have to use a car financing company to fund the upgrade and it’ll be just another loan to add to a growing list.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom. When Dexter isn’t destroying our home, he’s actually incredibly cute. We’ve become incredibly close and it’s lovely being there to see every milestone. We’re also saving on nursery fees, and I have lots of great activities lined up for him when he’s old enough to be trusted with scissors, paint and glue. I’m also able to write this blog which will be such a great scrapbook of our days spent together when he’s older.

So weighing it all up, having to downgrade my wardrobe and shop for supermarket own brands, is a very small price to pay for getting to spend my days at home with Dex. I mean, who wouldn’t want to wake up to this every morning!? But if anyone does know next week’s lottery numbers, feel free to leave me a comment!

Why I’m #Blogging4Madeleine

Posted on

Today is Madeleine McCann’s 10th birthday. She’s now been away from her mummy & daddy for 6 years.

When Madeleine originally went missing, her story was compelling and desperately sad. Now, as a mummy myself, it’s utterly terrifying. It’s simply inconceivable to imagine just how devastated Gerry and Kate must be. Every time I see them on the television bravely appealing to the public for help, I get a knot in my stomach. Of course, I don’t know the McCann’s personally, but there’s something so heartbreaking about their appearance. Their eyes are full of tragedy, pain and exhaustion. I can’t say for certain this isn’t the way they have always looked, but it’s hard not to attribute it to the loss of Maddie.

The story has additional resonance for me because I’ve been to Praia Da Luz in Portugal. I stayed in exactly the same apartment complex (The Ocean Club Apartments) that Maddie went missing from on May 3 2007. I slept a matter of metres away from where the tragedy took place. I swam in the same pool that she did. I ate (and had a few underage sneaky cocktails) in the bar her parents were dining in. I know firsthand just how short the distance is from where her mum and dad sat with their friends, to where she lay peacefully sleeping. It’s terrifying to think she was so close to them, yet still somehow vanished without trace.

With the breaking news last week that Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus from Cleveland America were found alive after ten years in captivity, it raises thoughts of hope and faith. Although these girls suffered a horrifying ordeal at the hands of Ariel Castro, they are now reunited with their families, and sleeping once again under the same roof as their parents. This is the very least every single child deserves - to be safe and surrounded by people that love them. To think of the sheer terror Maddie must have experienced on that fateful night; The fear and confusion of being taken away from mummy & daddy - it’s too sad to even contemplate. No child deserves that.

The story of a missing child is so utterly sad. There are so many questions that Gerry and Kate might as well be shouting into the wind. They won’t ever stop asking them, but there is no one to answer them. Did Maddie wander off and injure herself? Was she spirited off by someone? Worse still, is she still alive? Every scenario is frightening. Every scenario is grief-inducing for Gerry and Kate. Even if they were to be reunited tomorrow, they have still been denied access to so much of Maddie’s childhood. And if she’s indeed not with us anymore, Gerry and Kate need to know so they can grieve for their daughter. Not knowing is the worst thing imaginable.

An age progressed image of how Madeleine might look now

As with all missing children, we’ve all heard the desperate ‘Someone knows’ line. The saddest thing of all just might be that in fact, no one does. But we can’t simply give up. There are two fellow parents locked in paralysis and having to be strong and brave for their other children. No one would wish for them to live another second stuck in this way. They deserve to know the truth about the little girl they loved so much.

Tragically, Madeleine is just one high-profile missing child. There are hundreds of other families in the UK facing the same nightmare. There are thousands worldwide. It certainly makes you think.

If you have any information at all surrounding Madeleine’s case, no matter how inconsequential, then please contact you local police station or call the Madeleine investigation line on +44 845 838 4699. You can also email investigation@findmadeleine.com.

This post is one of many you might stumble across concerning Madeleine’s story today. #Blogging4Madeleine is a campaign brought to you by A Mummy’s View, and hosted by Britmums (click on the badge below for more information). The idea is to blog, tweet, and share Maddie’s story and show that we (as parents) will never give up on a missing child. If I was ever to lose Dexter, I’d want for everyone on the planet to be calling out his name - so this one is for you Maddie. I hope you are safe and will find your way home.
