Is it just me or is there a less of an emphasis on pedestrian road safety campaigns nowadays? When I was growing up there were tons of memorable jingles and adverts aimed at children; there was that weird hedgehog thing in 1998, and the 1970s had Green Cross Man wagging his finger at overenthusiastic kids.
Nowadays the real focus seems to be on driver awareness - with shocking gutsy ads that make you wince and raise your eyebrows. Of course the US get it right, they just defer all their public information announcements to the The Muppets - anything with Elmo in it tends to hit the mark. Yet for us Brits, there isn’t really a multi-generational character that appeals to both genders - the closest thing we have is Fireman Sam and the thought of him popping up on adverts throughout the day makes my toes curl.
It seems educating children on the Green Cross Code now lies solely with parents and teachers. True, there is much to be said about practical lessons in road safety, but a catchy tune wouldn’t go amiss. I know Dexter’s attitude to road safety leaves much to be desired - he’s already “too cool” to hold my hand at 2.5 years!
Looking at vehicular crime stats over the past few 15 years, pedestrian fatalities appear to be down some 54%. Although this is really encouraging, there were still too many avoidable deaths over the last few years, and many of these are children.
Now RentalCars.com have created a quiz you take with your children to show the importance of pedestrian diligence - despite the questions being really simple and designed for little people, I still only got 7/10 questions right. Seems I need to revisit the Green Cross Code myself before I attempt to teach Dexter!
It’s well worth a few minutes of yours, and your child’s time, so do take the quiz and see how you fare.
