Feeling the Pinch - The Downside to Being a SAHM

I knew when I decided not to return to work that our lifestyle would be very different to how it was before I had Dexter. There would be no more nights of drunken debauchery or shopping sprees, and we’d have to work doubly hard if we wanted any treats.

There’s no denying that money is tight here at Chez Mills at the moment. Lots of bills have gone out this month leaving precious little for Craig and I to play with. Given we’re dead set on the Australia move, we’re having to save every penny we have for legal fees. We’ll also have to use a car financing company when we’re out there too as our car simply isn’t worth taking over there with us. Couple this with the fact we’ll have to sell everything here in the UK and have to furnish a home from scratch over there, and it’s truly headache-inducing.

With all this going on, our kitchen is a bit ‘Old Mother Hubbarb’ (as in nothing in the cupboard). Breakfast and lunch is now toast and a cup a soup, I’m mending old clothes, and I’ve dusted down old cleansers and make-up that are at least 7 years old in a bid to save the pennies! Don’t get me wrong, Craig works hard and earns good money. We have a roof over our heads, and we still manage the odd treat, but tightening your belt is never much fun and we don’t appear to be getting anywhere quickly. With our holiday budget dissipating, I’m dreading something breaking that will need replacing.

I think the next thing to go will be our washing machine. It’s one of those with a digital display that counts down to the end of a cycle, and it seems to get stuck on 47 minutes every time we do a load. A good kick usually sorts it out, but it’s only a matter of time before it gets fed up of being abused and packs in completely.

Craig’s work van will also need upgrading soon. As he’s a courier he does approximately 35,000 miles a year and likes replacing them every 3 years. With no money put aside we’ll have to use a car financing company to fund the upgrade and it’ll be just another loan to add to a growing list.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom. When Dexter isn’t destroying our home, he’s actually incredibly cute. We’ve become incredibly close and it’s lovely being there to see every milestone. We’re also saving on nursery fees, and I have lots of great activities lined up for him when he’s old enough to be trusted with scissors, paint and glue. I’m also able to write this blog which will be such a great scrapbook of our days spent together when he’s older.

So weighing it all up, having to downgrade my wardrobe and shop for supermarket own brands, is a very small price to pay for getting to spend my days at home with Dex. I mean, who wouldn’t want to wake up to this every morning!? But if anyone does know next week’s lottery numbers, feel free to leave me a comment!

REVIEW Little Bird Told Me - Curious Caterpillar Rocker

Posted on

I don’t think I can put into words just how awesome this little Curious Caterpillar Infant Rocker has been. When you have a baby as fidgety and naughty as my little guy, it’s an absolute life-saver!

CuriousCaterpillarRocker4

I’ve had my eye on one of these ever since I was pregnant. It was right up there with a rocking horse and an activity mat on my list of ‘wants’. The problem I had was that the ones I saw on the highstreet didn’t look particularly safe. They didn’t have anything to support baby’s bum so it seemed that an aggressive rock would see baby falling off! This is what makes this one from Little Bird Told Me so great as there’s a proper little seat for Dexter to plonk his butt in.

Until this rocker (or Izzy as we like to call her) came into my living room I had daily fights with Dexter. He’d make a beeline for the tv cabinet and pull the wires out of the Blu Ray Player, or seek out mummy’s glass of water and smash it on the floor. Now he’ll sit quietly on his rocker and watch Wimbledon with me.

It’s his own little chair and he simply loves being in it. In terms of comfort and safety it’s incredibly well thought-out with easy to grip handles and foot plates. It’s much roomier than its picture suggests and will comfortably hold my chunky little fella for a few years.

There are lots of clever little features too. Izzy also has a large bum (I think it might actually be an apple but I like to think she’s outdone me on the bum stakes) which opens up and doubles as storage for a few of Dexter’s soft toys. She’s also a mummy and has baby caterpillar rattle which also lives in her derriere. With plenty of crinkly bits and hidden squeaks there’s plenty of added interest to keep little one’s entertained.

At £85 Izzy isn’t cheap, but she’s built to last, surprisingly easy to clean and provides a really safe ride for tiny ones. Dexter has really taken to her and I’m really pleased he has his very own seat to relax in so he’s no longer climbing all over me!

Caterpillar kids rocker

I definitely recommend heading to Little Bird Told Me to check out some of their other lovely bits and pieces. They have some beautiful rocking horses for older children that I’ve fallen in love with, and activity gyms and soft toys for tiny tots. They’re on Facebook too so definitely worth giving them a little like and reading some other reviews.

Dexter’s New Nemesis: Lindam Sure Shut Orto Safety Gate

Posted on

Poor Dexter. He got an unbelievable shock this morning when I carried him past the white thing at the bottom of the stairs. Naturally I whisked him straight off for a bum change and some porridge before he’d get a proper chance to explore it, but I can testify he spent his entire time in his high chair staring through the wall at it like Superman.

Stair-climbing is a recent hobby for my little guy. It’s actually my fault as one morning I left my make-up bag (a.k.a Dexter’s favourite toy) on a bottom step. Learning that mounting stairs is perfectly achievable, he’s set about trying to get up them ever since. A safety gate was definitely needed. Cue the brilliant guys at Lindam and the Sure Shut Orto!

We have L-shaped stairs which are incredibly common in old terraced houses. This mean the width of our walls on our landing are dramatically different from those at the base. With this being also a rented house, we needed a pressure fit gate that didn’t involve us drilling into (and thereby Craig ruining) the wall. With Lindam having some 20 years experience of providing leading safety equipment for homes of every shape, I sent them all the challenges we faced and they came out trumps.

Of course Craig will want me to tell you that he fitted this gate. But this simply isn’t true as I fitted it myself (I’m expecting some serious back-patting here). I won’t gloat too much though as it was impossibly easy. The gate was already assembled and ready-to-use, I only had to pop the pressure caps on the heavy duty screws, and use a spanner to tighten the bolts. I really liked the fact that the gate had a natural gap that closed only when the gate was secure. This means I knew my gate was fitted safely before letting Dexter pound on it and attempt to fit his limbs through the bars.

index01There are many benefits to a pressure fit system. They’re fully adjustable (this one currently fits openings from 75cm to 82cm, and can extend to a whopping 138cm with separate extensions) and they don’t require any drilling. Given they are not physically secured to your walls, you can use just the one gate to stop budding acrobats getting up and down the stairs.

As regards opening and closing the gate, the Sure Shut Orto has a pull and lift handle that is easy to manage one-handed. This is great for early mornings when your munchkin decides they’re ready to get up at 5am. You won’t be squeezing through it either as it has an extra wide walkthrough section for us fatties!

What really makes this safety gate rock, is the fact you can open it inwards or outwards so it’s hugely flexible depending upon which cupboard room you’d like to limit baby to. It also shuts automatically and double locks itself so you can’t be outwitted by your child. Genius.

All this means I can relegate our old scary-looking gate to the garden. This rickety contraption came to us by way of eBay. Having got Dexie’s cotbed for a bargain £150, the seller threw this in for free. I’m not entirely sure if this was generosity on her part, or her just wanting to see the back of it. Either way, plans for this one involve old baked bean cans and daisies! (like this one >)

Lindam have a great video section that means you can discover exactly which gate is right for your home. You can also like them on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Youtube for latest product news and offers! What a social bunch they are!
