How to Create a Beautiful Baby Bedroom

Posted on

No matter what your budget is, you definitely can create a cosy, tranquil, and beautiful bedroom for your special little baby. This will be the room in which you’ll spend a lot of time with your little one, calming him or her, soothing your child with a lullaby, and watching him or her grow. From the crib to the décor on the walls, the furniture, and the toys that your child will learn and grow up with, this is the first room your baby will remember, especially if you design it in a way that will enable him or her to grow into it and still use it as a place to call his or her own. Nursery How to Create a Beautiful Baby Bedroom

Below are a few tips that will help make designing a gorgeous baby bedroom easier. Again, do not let your budget restrict you, as there are ample opportunities to have fun designing this important space and making it the perfect spot in the house for your new baby.

Start with a Convertible Crib

A convertible crib is a great way to invest in a product that will be useful as your child grows. This type of crib will work perfectly for your infant but can later be transformed into a daybed that your toddler will love. And even beyond that, with a little ingenuity and some extra parts, you can even transform it into an adult bed that your child can use for many years to come.

Go for a Stylish Padded Rocking Chair

You are already familiar with the old wooden rocking chairs of old, but have you seen some of the latest and most lovely padded rocking chairs that are just perfect for sitting for long periods of time feeding your baby or helping him or her get to sleep? With funky designs and bright colours, you can choose one that will fit right in with the rest of your baby’s bedroom décor. And, as your child grows, he or she will more than likely enjoy rocking in it as well.

Have Fun Painting the Walls and Creating a Theme

When it comes to painting the walls of your baby’s bedroom, rather than just sticking to plain old baby blue, pale pink, yellow, or white, have a little fun. Create a mural or paint a scene from your favourite nursery rhymes or Disney movie that you want your child to grow up with. Let your creativity run wild and transform your baby’s bedroom into a fantastical haven that he or she will adore with each passing year. You can even coordinate the décor so that it all falls into the same theme. For example, you can find luxuriously cosy, all natural baby blankets from The Stripy Company that will coordinate with whatever colours and theme you choose.

Incorporate Eco-Friendly Items

Eco-friendly items are great for the planet and great for your entire family because they are made from materials that are safe for sensitive babies. An adorable eco-friendly mobile that features the cutest animals, for example, is a great way to start your child off on a path that will nurture his or her respect for the environment and other living creatures. Any product made from sustainable materials will be a perfect addition to your baby’s bedroom in the 21st century, as more consumers are becoming aware of their buying habits’ impact upon the planet and people all over the world.

A Soft Rug

If you plan on having hardwood floors in your baby’s bedroom, purchase a colourful, fun rug that will not only match your baby bedroom’s décor but also provide the perfect spot for sitting on the floor playing with your baby and his or her toys. This cosy spot in the room is a great way to teach your child through games, interaction, and playtime.

With so many clever and creative ways to transform an ordinary room into a spectacular baby’s bedroom, you can work within whatever budget you have set for yourself to make a space that your child will feel safe and warm in and that you will enjoy spending time in as well as you watch him or her grow big and strong.

Perhaps you have already had your first child and need a refresher on the do’s and don’ts of putting together the newborn’s room, or it is your first one and you could are anxious to know how to combine taste, budget and longevity all in one. It is an exhilarating experience and one that you want to enjoy but it can be daunting especially when you hit the shops. These tips might help you create the perfect nursery that will grow with your child.

Style or Theme

It will help immeasurably if you can focus on one theme/concept because it will then put you in the mood to choose the necessary palette of colours and fabrics to complement your space, and to develop a cohesive design.

Paint Nursery Design Ideas

Focal point

Within the room there needs to be a focal point where perhaps there is a signature element. This could be the crib (this is the most common) or perhaps the alcove, large bay window or even a special piece of furniture such as a hand-crafted chest of drawers or a giraffe!

Textiles/fabric

Before you choose the paint or even pick up a brush, look and choose the fabric for the curtains - if you have bought paint on sale and it does not match, it’s a loss on every level (as well as time consuming!). Plus it is far easier to select colour with the technology of cross-matching than trying to do the same with fabric.

Paint

When you are about to choose your paint, bear in mind that it must be odourless (or at least low in odour), and in order to prevent the baby-to-be from being exposed to dangerous fumes, use a VOC-free brand.

As babies spend a great deal of time on their backs, it might be an idea to decorate the ceiling with either a soothing colour, pattern or even a mural.

Growing space

Like anywhere in the house, it takes time to really understand a space. This particular room will belong to baby for many years and it is a good idea to imagine how it will withstand all the stages of development. Will there be room for the toddler’s bed, room to stand while changing nappies beside the changing table? Making the most of the potential room space will serve you well.

Feeding/Changing area

Newborns need feeding at various times of day and night. Look around for a comfortable chair or create a corner that will accommodate this routine. Padded armrests that are wide are handy plus an easy-clean surface.

Install a dimmer light system to maintain a soothing atmosphere at nights. This Axo collection http://lampcommerce.com/en/catalogue/brands/axo-light might just be the ticket! You can also use projected soft lights to add special effects onto the walls at night to induce baby to feed, sleep or relax. Otherwise keep a nightlight for when you need to feed late as this provides comfort.

You will also need an accessible changing and storage station for all the various cleaning paraphernalia (from nappies to lotions) so that you are not going to disturb your little one. Stock up while you can!

Lastly but not least Congratulations!

Just Put Your Feet Up Dexter… It’s a Hard Life!

Dex would have me believe that it’s an incredibly tough life being a toddler. There’s countless horrific bum changes, hundreds of tantrums to be had when I dare to pluck my mobile phone from his grasp, and (even though he’s restricted to knee level) dozens of opportunities to create a mess. It also takes considerable effort on his part to pretend he doesn’t understand the word ‘no’, and listen to his mummy bleating on about ‘what sound a cow makes’ - I might as well not bother as he finds it far funnier watching me crawl around on my hands and knees gathering Duplo, play food, and wooden bricks from every corner of our lounge.

So when it all gets too much, he’s now got a dinky little child’s tub chair and footstool from Dunelm Mill to take a well-earned break on.

You see poor old Dexter loves putting his feet up when watching Dora the Explorer. He also needs somewhere comfy and quiet to indulge his penchant for mummy & baby magazines. It also makes for the ideal spot to seek refuge when daddy whips out the vacuum cleaner.

All joking aside, I seriously love this leather armchair. It’s modelled on Dunelm Mill’s adult-sized Milan Collection and comes complete with the same intricate stitching detail. Also available in blue and red, I choose deep brown to complement our living room suite.

As well as being seriously stylish, it’s also incredibly easy to wipe clean and has a removable seat pad so you can easily get rid of any stray crumbs. Best of all it’s only £49.99 for both chair and footstool so the perfect unconventional Christmas pressie.

It’s been climbed over, jumped upon and pushed around our lounge and remains really sturdy and upright. The quality is just amazing given the price. I’ve seen similar chairs in baby boutiques for twice as much, if not more. It’s absolutely perfect for any 1 or 2 year old.

In fact, I’m equally besotted with all the other children’s furniture available at Dunelm Mill. The price points are amazing and the build quality is impressive. Most is available exclusively online, but many bits are also in-store if you want to have a look close-up. Where else can you find invaluable storage solutions for under £30?

To see what else Dunelm Mill has to offer, I’d recommend liking them on Facebook, following on Twitter and G+, or checking out their Pinterest profile for inspiration.

Disclaimer: We’re a favourite blog of Dunelm and therefore received a gift card to cover the cost of Dexter’s chair. I’m not easily swayed though and am positively delighted with our chair - hence the glowing review!
