Bingo through the ages

Posted on

You either love it or hate it, but Bingo is big business and here to stay.

Since its conception in Italy circa 1530, Bingo pushed its way into town halls and disused cinemas and was scaled up for the masses in the 1950s. Not just a past time for pensioners, memorable (and sometimes slightly cringeworthy) television ads saw the much-loved game gain in popularity and dedicated halls housed raucous hen-dos and provided pre-club entertainment for a younger audience.

Yet in 2012, The Bingo Association reported there were just over 400 halls in the UK - less than half the number in the game’s heyday. That isn’t to say the nation’s love affair with Bingo is dwindling, it’s just moved with the times and found its way onto our laptops, smartphones and tablets. If Bingo is the game for you, it’s never been more accessible. You can now play whilst watching the telly, in the bath or in bed. Prize pools have also sky-rocketed, and there are deals, offers and bonuses aplenty to keep your gaming pot afloat.

This interesting infographic, provided by bingo heavy-weight PaddyPower, shows just how much bingo has transformed throughout the ages. The most eye-opening thing for me was discovering there was an online jackpot payout of £5million back in 2014 > Seems I’m spending too much time on Twitter and not enough on playing the slots!

Righto, I’m off to have a go and see if I can raise a few thousand to pay off my credit cards… or maybe take another holiday… or maybe stump up a deposit for a mortgage…

Questionable parenting as controversial video game survey results are revealed

Posted on

Before holiday I took part in a survey by My Voucher Codes as part of their ongoing research into the effect of technology and social media on our lives. Specifically the survey addressed my children’s relationship with video games. Personally, I had little to add as my two are weeny and their gaming is limited to the (somewhat bland) apps they have on their Leap Pad. However, having now seen the full results of the survey as published by Digital Connect Mag, they are a little disturbing.

The survey questioned parents to see what games they allow their children to play, if they do any research prior to purchasing them, if their children have access to games they have forbidden at friends houses, as well as how long their children spend playing computer games a week.

For me, the most telling question here is access to games outside of the home. Just how likely are your children to fess up and tell you they’re up until midnight battling strangers online at a slumber party? Furthermore, if you knew it was happening round Little Johnnies house, would you stop your child from going there? 23% said yes they’d keep their kids at home, but this is only an option if they knew in the first place.

So in truth, it’s very tricky to get an accurate picture of what games children are playing. With controversial games such as these below, it’s incredibly worrying to think about what our nation’s kids might be exposed to in bedrooms across the UK.

The video game survey further revealed that 50% of UK parents have been asked to buy age restricted games, with 30% admitting they eventually gave in to their child’s demands. This includes popular violent adult games such as Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty and Battlefield. Much of this seems to be a result of parental naivety as 35% admit they won’t even play or research the games first to see if they are suitable.

Mark Pearson founder of My Voucher Codes states the results were “disturbing” and points to peer pressure among youngsters as a major cause. He rightly goes on to state that “age ratings are set for a reason” and I have to agree. We’re not talking about Space Raiders and Pac-Man here with basic graphics and limited gameplay, games nowadays use CGI and are as life-like as the blockbusters we rush to see at the cinema.

In today’s ADHD-afflicted world of smart phones, app-infested iPads and console-addicted teens, immature young minds are plunged headfirst into virtual hedonism. My take is that parents need to seriously question the effects of gaming of children; Are they mentally equipped to make a proper distinction between what is real and what isn’t? Are our children becoming increasingly desensitised to violence as a result? Is it impacting adversely on their physical and mental health? - The studies exist so it’s time to seriously bone up.

Online Hobbies for Parents

After a long day looking after the kids, all a mother wants to do once they are in bed is sit back and relax. The twilight hours of the day belong to parents and offer an opportunity to do the things there simply wasn’t enough time for in the day. Craig and I will somehow wrestle the kids into their beds and then begin a frantic half hour of hastily shoving plates into the dishwasher, ironing, vacuuming up traces of breadsticks ground into the carpet and numerous other delights you only get around to noticing when the downstairs becomes a child-free zone.

As soon as the chores are done, it’s my time to whip out the laptop and crack on with a little blogging without a mini-me pulling out the charging cable and dunking it in their orange juice. Wine is most definitely optional, as is the resulting liver damage.

Without further ado - here are my top tips for surviving parenthood without your husband calling up Broadmoor and getting you sectioned.

Become a box set geek

With hundreds of television shows now available on providers like Netflix, why not get lost in the fantasy world of Game of Thrones, or the intrigue and politics of the CIA with Homeland? As soon as you’ve watched a few episodes of a box set you’ll be hooked and end up watching it until late into the night. Breaking Bad was my absolute saviour when night-feeding Heidi.

Look familiar?

I clearly took up this one! Writing your own blog gives you a creative outlet to rant about the demands of parenthood and get advice from experienced mums on how to stop your child stuffing their vegetables down their nappy. It is extremely time-flexible, you can update your posts whenever you wish, and write as little or as much as you like. All jokes aside it can also enhance your social life (through blogger events) get you the odd freebie, and give you a sense of purpose when you leave the 9 to 5 behind and enter the murky and disturbing world of CBeebies and messy play.

Try out gaming online

The popularity of online and social gaming has risen dramatically in recent years. This is mainly due to advances in social networking allowing users to share their scores and results with one another. In fact, just days ago I saw dozens of tweens and grown men queuing outside Game for the launch of FIFA15.

Online android casino gaming has also become more popular as the Smartphone revolution has taken hold. This has allowed iPhone and android users to get a slice of the action usually reserved for those sat at a laptop. You can follow online tutorials to get a greater understanding of the games, and once you start playing you can limit how much you are betting. The likes of poker and roulette are available to play online, so if you’re looking to do something distinctly more ‘adult’ of an evening, this could be the new hobby for you.
