We’ve been incredibly lucky with Dexter when it comes to weaning. He is yet to refuse anything we give him (finger foods, porridge, fresh fruits, and the odd sneaky Rusk) so we’re delighted he’s growing up with a healthy appreciation for food.

Dexter is lucky enough that his Daddy loves to cook and is always getting to try new things at dinner-time. However, as poor Dexter has to survive the mornings and afternoons with just me whilst Craig is at work, I’m the first to admit that breakfast and lunch is all about convenience.

For breakfast, Dex always has porridge. We thoroughly believe that this morning meal is the most important as it sustains him throughout the day - that’s why we’ve always opted for organic choices that have no sneaky additives or nasties. I’ve been a massive advocate of Ella’s Kitchen Wakey Wakey Baby Porridge for exactly this reason, and until now have mixed it up with bits of fresh banana, dried strawberries and other yummy fruit to make it taste a little bit different everyday.

I’ve long been an Ella’s Kitchen fan - there’s something about the funky packaging and excellent product messaging that makes it so accessible and fun. If you sign up to their newsletter, you’re always getting little friendly emails in your inbox with news of competitions and funny baby stuff. It’s the same with their Facebook - it’s all tongue-in-cheek and about making weaning fun. There’s no comparison with other baby and toddler brands - they’re just brilliant at what they do.

When Ella’s Kitchen contacted me about trying their new range of 100% organic Breakfast range of porridges and cereals, I couldn’t wait to see what Dex made of them. The combination of fruit and oats is exactly what my little monster is so fond of and these great new flavours looked right up his street.

We were sent three ‘spouches’ - Strawberry, Mango and Banana Porridge, Mango and Apple Baby Porridge and a Banana Baby Porridge. Mango is a new one on Dex so I couldn’t wait to see his little face when he tried it.

The first thing to note is how ridiculously brilliant the packaging is. Not only is it bright and vibrant, it’s easy to read and fabulously easy to pour from. As you mix these porridges with baby’s milk they also go a long way - our three pouches will last him a good month (and that’s with generous morning portions).

As this new range is designed to support little people throughout the weaning process - the stage 2 porridges are textured and not lumpy to encourage your munchkin to chew. Although Dexter is well used to this, I can certainly vouch that the consistency is different to your usual baby rice porridge. Dexter was certainly working his food around in mouth a little longer than usual which is really good to see.

The best thing however - is watching Dexter literally devour his breakfast. He smiles in-between mouthfuls and I know he’s really enjoying his most important meal of the day. It’s so reassuring to know his brekkie is literally packed full of goodness.

Weaning Update

Dexter enjoying his first ever taste of Ella’s Kitchen Broccoli, Pears and Peas!

It’s a messy business this weaning!

We’ve had some big successes, and some major fails. Dex loves all the purees and is a massive fan of all the strange Ella’s Kitchen concoctions. I never give him something I haven’t tried myself and some of them are pretty ‘out there’ - but he LOVES them. I love this picture as it shows just how much he’s enjoying trying new things.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of Baby Rice and Baby Porridge. We can’t believe this as I think it’s absolutely yummy. In fact, when we’re feeding him, we’re often sneaking a quick mouthful ourselves.

We’re also having problems introducing sippy cups. Dex is simply not ready to move on from teats and is having a right paddy at the suggestion of having to old his own bottle. Right now we have to use a cushion to prop it up and place his hands around it. Those little eyes pop open as soon as our hands get 30cms away from the scene!

One thing I can’t fault him for, is his personal hygiene. My son has complete OCD and hates having food around his mouth. The photograph above is a rare occurrence as usually he wipes his own face with his bib / sleeve / muslin after every mouthful. His bibs and clothes are now stained beyond redemption and serve as little reminders of all the different flavours he’s consumed that week. Laundry nights are now a two-man job with mummy and daddy having to forensically analyse every item of clothing for traces of food. We’re getting through Vanish like no one’s business, and it feels as though one or both us are constantly tossing bits and pieces in the clothes bin.

His nappies have also been interesting. He’s had every shade of poo you can think of, and every consistency too. We can now hear his tummy rumble from the room next door!

It’s all good fun though and we really enjoy watching him experiment with food. He’s growing up so fast!

Ready. Steady. WEAN!

At 4 months we got a bunch of weaning advice in the post and into my email inbox (I’m sure most novice mums will recall this). Craigy and I have poured over these and researched the subject thoroughly to work out just when and how to start Dexter off.

Although it seems that all the recommended reading suggests that babies should stay on exclusively breast or formula milk for 6 months, Dexter appears to be showing all the signs of being ready. From everything I’ve read, there seems to be a general consensus that parents should trust in their own instincts, so that’s what we’re doing. To be honest, everything disappears into his mouth, he sits up straight when feeding, and cries uncontrollably when mummy and daddy eat dinner. I realise some people might disagree with us adding new tastes to his diet, but we feel it’s right so stand by our decision.

So, armed with a dozen coupons that came through the letter-box, we went to Tesco’s to see what was available for him to try.

Our aim is invariably to give him weeny portions midway through his morning and afternoon bottle. We wanted something healthy, tasty and easy with no artificial e-numbers or flavourings or nasties. As he becomes accustomed to eating he’ll have pureed versions of mummy and daddy’s food. We eat fresh and home-cooked food every night (as Craig is a fantastic cook) and find this more flavoursome than store-prepared food. We always have meat, 3 veg and carbs so there is always something on our plates that can be blended to be suitable for our precious lad.

Right now however, we opted for Ella’s Kitchen. He’s got a number of fruity super-smooth-puree’s to enjoy, and… he’s loving it. In fact, I can’t believe how well he’s taken to it. There’s no throw-back and he swallows immediately with minimal mess. He’s also already started grabbing at the spoon (and our hands) so he can control the process.

Yet another milestone done. We’re so proud of you!

Looks like daddy’s going to have a great time cleaning your butt-butt throughout the day when mummy goes back to work next week!

And… of course it would be totally rude to not mention Madhouse Family Reviews. We have recently won a trio of gorgeous anyway up with Cheryl and can’t wait to introduce them to Dex’s routine. Thanks Cheryl , can’t wait to receive them.

So when did your lil one start weaning? Have you any advice for us as Dexter starts his adventure of discovering new food?
