What you need in your wardrobe whilst dieting

Posted on

Dieting? Here are my top picks from ESPRIT that’ll help show off your progress, even if you’re in-between sizes.

A casual look at my Facebook feed tells me I’m not the only one on a weight loss mission this January. Last year I got totally fed up of bumping into school friends and having them not recognise me, zips breaking, and having to suck in my tummy when I pull up my jeans. So as of Jan 1st I popped myself on a diet, cobbled together from things I’ve seen on the telly, Buzzfeed and protein powder adverts. Somehow it’s seen me drop some 14lbs already and I feel pretty good; My thighs are no longer rubbing together, and my third chin has disappeared. My tummy is no longer bloated, and supported by some shapewear, actually looks flat to the casual observer.

Despite this weight loss, I’m still suffering from phantom weight. That’s to say, I look in the mirror and still see the lumps and bumps that were there before I started. Although my clothes are falling down and I’ve clearly dropped a dress size, given I’ve another to go, I’m a bit to loathe to hit the shops and buy a new wardrobe that will most likely be too big in six months time.

So I’ve popped together a few looks that will support me throughout my dress size transition. From dresses that will cling flatteringly to a size 14, then skim reassuringly over a 12, to oversized jumpers, and belted trench coats that’ll see you through the fat days and skinnier ones.

Navy

Featured (all from ESPRIT): Lace & chiffon day dress (navy) £69 / (Body con block dress) Sundresses £55 (mixed blue) / Chiffon mini dress with trumpet sleeves (navy. dotty) £55 / Fitted sweatshirt dress, Bouclé £39 (in grey blue) / Stretchy denim dress with a flared skirt £59

When I was carrying the extra poundage, I lived in black. Now, having dropped a dress size, I’m feeling a little braver. I’m not quite ready for white jeans, body suits and boob tubes (more’s the pity), but I am loving navy at the moment. It can be dressed up and down, and accessorised with brights when I’m feeling particularly confident.

When it comes to dresses when dieting, it’s a great time to experiment with different hem length. Top pick for me is therefore this super cute poka dot chiffon dress from ESPRIT. The floaty material skims over lumpy hips and thighs, with full length trumpet sleeves to both cover your upper arms, and help create the illusion they are perfectly proportioned. Throw in the little belt to adjust the waist as the weight comes off, and you have a perfect little number that looks equally great on the school run as it does on date night.

If your arms are toned but you’re currently battling with excess stomach fat, the lacey number above is also incredibly flattering. The full length flared skirt will do all the right things to your legs and thighs, with an oversized belt to hide away your wobbly tum. Throw on a shawl at night, with coordinating heels, and you’re good for any after work occasion - or team with a cardi and knee high boots to add a touch of glamour when ferrying the kids to and from after-school clubs - who said cocktail dresses were just for weddings!. Check it out here.

Pink

Featured (all from ESPRIT): Ruffle top (mixed) £29 / Long sleeve top (bardot peplum) £25 / Fine-knit jumper with frilled sleeves (baby pink) £39 / Trenchcoat (light blue) £99 / Mac (baby pink) £99 / Lace overlay top (black) £29 / Oversized jumper (white/black) £29 / Blazer (black) £ 55.00

It’s all very well buying the perfect dress, but the wind has literally just torn down a fence panel in my back garden. The fact is, just when you’re slimming down and need encouragement from mums at the school gate, you’re layered up with hats, scarves and heavy winter jackets that do nothing to show off your flatter stomach. In short, you need a tailored raincoat that nips in at the waist.

I’m loving this baby pink mac with drawstring waist and oversized hood for everyday. Perfect with jeans, it’ll offer you enough protection from the rain whilst showing off all your hard work. If you’re still a bit unsure your bum and thighs, the pale blue trench coat above is available in a variety of sizes and colours to lift your outfit into spring when winter eventually clears off and leaves us all alone!

Light cotton mix sweaters, with sleeve details and ruffles also help draw attention away from areas that still need work. By adding a little fluff and frill to your boobs and shoulders, it forces the eye out then back in, showcasing any lost inches. Even better, as you drop a dress size, these same tops will get slightly more free-fitting, making them bang on trend for summer evenings.

In conclusion. there’s no reason to put yourself on a shopping ban if you’re dieting. A pretty new dress, statement sweater, or to-die-for coat will give you the motivation to push on through to your goal weight, so try not to deny yourself the odd treat.

Detox Post-mortem #OpBabyWeight

#OpBabyWeight began again in earnest on the 5th January and had its ups and downs…

Guided by my mentor Alex Smallman (High on Health) The main theme for the week was clean and healthy food. I was to drink a minimum of 3 litres of water, and cut out all gluten, diary and excess sugar from my diet. This meant ditching my daily sausage roll and lunchtime sarnie, and coming up with something radically less palatable. Having never been a big breakfast eater, having food so early in the morning also felt a little unnatural.

I owe a massive thanks to Alex for sending me a healthy shopping list and recipe ideas before we did our supermarket shop. She suggested we shop online to keep focused on the plan ahead, so we did. The problem was, I seriously underestimated the quantities I’d need to keep on top of it. A single bag of bananas, 1 cucumber and a dozen eggs doesn’t go far when you factor in the kids, blending them into smoothies, and snacking throughout the day.

I ended up grazing the fridge rather than being clever. If I needed a snack, I’d reach for cucumber and hummus rather than look to ease the hunger pangs. In retrospect, I needed something filling.

Alex Smallman to the rescue!

Having given me a quick phone call to see how I was, Alex was concerned enough to travel down to my house. We had spoken at 11am on the Wednesday and I hadn’t managed to eat anything up until this point. We all know how tough can parenting can be, and it was one of those days where nappy changes, tantrums and feeds seem to run after each other in a never-ending cycle. Rather than fall back on something naughty, I just starved myself.

Alex came over to show me that good food doesn’t have to take long to prepare. She whizzed this Quinoa mixed salad & nut (with a side of coconut fried egg) concoction in seconds.

Watching her just chuck things in and mix by hand was a bit of a wake-up call. In my head, I was looking for zero-prep dishes and it’s clear I have little imagination when it comes to food. I don’t understand the synergy between ingredients, and I’m scared of cooking, boiling or frying anything lest Fireman Sam leap from my telly and into my kitchen. I’d be far more likely to cut up a bunch of cucumber and tomato, eat it all raw with nothing to bulk it out, then complain 5 minutes later that I’m still ravenous.

Cooking

Some of her other tips were also really welcome:

  1. Make water less boring by infusing it with cucumber or lemon - not only amazing for your metabolism, it also lightly flavours the water. Prepare a litre jug in the morning, and two more throughout the day so you can accurately document your water intake.
  2. Add in bursts of HIIT exercise when the children nap - there are dozens of YouTube vids of 7, 10, 30 minute or more exercises so there’s no excuses. They’ll make you sweat, they’ll tire you out but they’ll target specific areas of your body and you will see results.
  3. Avoid low-fat labelled foods - These are all loaded with sugar. If you simply can’t cut out butter, get full fat butter rather than margarine. For frying, opt for raw coconut oil rather than sunflower oil, olive oil at a push.
  4. Make healthy twists on traditional favourite meals to keep you engaged - there’s no point undertaking a diet if it’s not sustainable. If spaghetti bolognaise is your thing, make it with turkey mince and switch out pasta for quinoa, if you like cottage pie, make it with turkey mince and top with sweet potato.

Cottage Pie

So… how much did it cost?

I naively thought the shopping bill wouldn’t be affected. However I seem to have overestimated just how much I actually eat anyway! I assumed cutting the pastry, carbs and dairy items from our shop, and subbing these with fresh fruit and vegetables would even itself out. But we still had to buy many of these things for the kids and Craig.

In total, this little lot will set us back an additional £30 to our usual bill every week, maxing it out to £95 (including nappies and baby formula).

010Spot the baby!

My fridge now looks scarily inedible. This might be food porn to some of you, but it looks like Davina McCall has moved in to me!

Did I lose any weight?

Sadly, I only lost 1lb. I have to put this down to the fact my body is transitioning, I didn’t manage much in the way of exercise, and it turns out I was starving myself. My little body went into shock and tried to conserve the little I put into it.

Somehow however, inch-wise, I lost a staggering 5″ from my bum and midriff. I’m putting this down to my Sculptlite treatment and cannot wait to see more fall off over the next few weeks. I also look slimmer. My face has thinned out, and I’m less bloated around my tummy, thighs and arms. I’m thinking much of this was water retention that is now finding a route out of my body.

Telfie1There’s still plenty of time to win Sculptlite treatment for yourself by checking out our comp!

For those tracking #OpBabyWeight - this means I’m now 13st 8lbs.

But how do I feel?

Bloody amazing. I’m very conscious that the Juice Plus+ supplements Alex has given me are providing my body with everything it needs to fuel every complex system in my body (more on these later). I’m up earlier in the mornings, flagging only when hunger pains set in about 3pm / 4pm (my own fault), and my hair, skin and nails are looking much healthier.

Although I’m a real whinger, I haven’t struggled as much as I thought. I’ve now finally accepted that my weight is too heavy, my clothes look terrible on me, and I don’t like myself like this. There’s no point adopting diet after diet and losing a scant number of pounds by the end of the month. If this is going to work, I’m going to have to follow a far stricter routine and be more aware of what is going into my body, and what it needs, rather than what I think it wants.

The week ahead…

Now we’ll be adding in Juice Plus+ plant-based protein shakes every morning and afternoon for the next 30 days. These will be packed out with almond milk, leafy greens, super-berries and other fruit to get even more nutrition out of them. The idea is to get creative and discover combinations that sound absurd, but taste great. If they don’t taste great, no matter - I’ll pinch my nose and down them anyway (it’s all about the greater cause!). I’ll be zooming in on the shakes soon and explaining what sets these apart from hundreds of others on the market.

050

Helping me blitz these extra ingredients into something resembling a smootie, is my trusty Nutribullet. Thanks to Alex, I’m no longer frightened of it and it’s made its way out of the box and onto my worktop. I won’t tell you too much about Alan (The Nutribullet) yet, as he’ll feature in lots of upcoming posts over the next few weeks. Needless to say this is a smart and essential bit of kit for my fat loss plans.

For more on Alex Smallman (my mentor and Juice Plus+ distributer) and her business High on Health, whilst her website is being built you can catch her on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

If you want to undertake a similar diet yourself, I can’t recommend the Nutribullet enough. You NEED this machine so buy one here.

This post is also bought to you with thanks from Decathlon. I’ll be donning the Lycra and embarrassing myself with some ugly-looking squats in some of their great value clothes next week.

Speak soon, wish me luck! Gem xx

The Best and Worst of Diet Chef So Far #OpBabyWeight

Posted on

So the weight loss is slow and I’m waning big time. With the entire Mills household under the weather, I’ve been pining for comfort food and have sunk well over my allocated quota of beer & wine in the evening. I’ll be doing a bumper post in a few days with my latest vital stats and another ghastly underwear shoot, but I thought I would share some food porn from Diet Chef with you in the meantime.

When you’re considering any diet, I appreciate that choice, quality & taste is right up there when picking your plan. I reported a few weeks ago that Diet Chef offered a staggeringly impressive choice for dieters, and promised you feedback on whether they delivered on taste. So consider this my round-up of the very best and most disappointing dishes so far.

Breakfast

I’m surprised at how filling these are. When I first saw the tiny 40g pouches of muesli, granola & porridge oats, I wondered whether they’d sustain me until lunchtime, but they really do. Breakfast is a new concept for me (all that used to pass these lips pre-elevenses is the odd cookie that Dex would ram into my mouth) but I can definitely get on board with it. I’m no longer ravenous come lunchtime and serving myself a man-sized plate of something naughty.

I’m loving the cookie and muesli bars. They deliver a burst of energy and are packed out with dried fruit, oats, raisins and chocolate pieces. They’re also a generous size and are perfectly textured.

The chocolate granola is also spot on with a nutty & crunchy texture and heavy chocolately accent. Little goes a long way and when you add a glass of skimmed milk it’s a hearty breakfast that staves off hunger pains until lunch.

Lunch

I mainly opted for soups as I like hot lunches and wanted to really feel as though I was dieting (liquid lunches if you like). These arrive in robust pouches and are easy to prepare; you simply snip into the corners of the pouch, heat for 2 minutes, rip open the top, stir the contents, then heat for a further minute. My only slight reservation with this is that the pouches are quite tall and only just stay upright in my microwave. Every time I heat one I worry it’ll topple over and my microwave will require an industrial clean.

Best ones for me have been pea & ham, chicken mulligatawny, oxtail and spicy tomato & beef. Each of these deliver a real kick and are full of flavour. They’re also well textured and border on broth territory. The ‘cream of’ series and oxtail soups are also thick, creamy and flavoursome. Less impressive is the mushroom soup which tasted a little like a powdered cup-a-soup.

I also ordered a few creamy pesto pasta and tomato, pepper, cheese pasta pots - these are like posh pot noodles and (provided you follow the instructions and stir vigorously) are really filling and delicious. You can taste the salt but this is really welcome given diet foods are all too often bland and under-seasoned.

Unfortunately I stocked up on chocolate, vanilla and cranberry protein bars thinking they’d be a fab on-the-go option - but they’re really quite horrible. They taste of chewy nougat, are difficult to finish and the difference in taste between the 3 flavours is negligible.

Dinner

This is the reality of dieting, don’t expect to have to sidle from the dining table & plonk yourself on the sofa with a belly full of food. Portion sizes are diddy but I’m impressed with the flavours and sheer amount of choice. There are dishes from most continents and they’re easy to prepare (simply pop them in the microwave as directed).

Stand out dishes for me include the beef rogan josh, beef in ale, sausages in onion gravy and the chicken curry. Sauces are thick and flavoursome and the meat is succulent and tasty. Each dish is well seasoned and you can really taste the quality of the ingredients used.

My only slight reservation is the salt & sodium content which seems high. I’m assured this is not to preserve the food, but rather to add taste. If you stick to the diet and limit sauces and other seasoning, you will stay in the confines of your RDA.

Blandest dishes were the Chicken Jalfrezi which lacked that all important kick, and the lasagne which was heavy on the béchamel sauce and not the tomato. But these are the only dishes that haven’t quite hit the mark for me so far.

Snacks

No complaints here whatsoever, the bags of popcorn will last you an entire film, the pretzels are nicely coated in rock salt, and the biscuit and oat bars are seriously scrummy. Plenty big enough to fill a small hole throughout the day!

Additional thoughts

Seriously missing side dishes, I eventually tweeted Diet Chef to ask if I could add steamed vegetables to a chicken curry. It seems I was missing a trick during week 1 and 2 as you’re encouraged to add your 5-a-day to the plan! I’m annoyed at myself for not checking this sooner as it would have plumped up the portion sizes (they’re not bad anyway but I’m greedy!).

My advice is to definitely add broccoli, cauliflower, beans or sprouts to your evening meals to pad them out a little. Each dish has plenty of gravy or sauce to flavour the veg, and this will certainly help fill you up! Drinking plenty of water will also help with this and jumpstart that metabolism. Adding a few wedges of lemon to each glass will also help rid your body of unwanted toxins.
