ASDA launches wooden toys range (Just in time for the C word…)

If I could banish plastic from my living room, I would. Both of my babies are really lucky they get to road test so many great toys, but when you stub your toe on some Duplo monstrosity for the hundredth time in one day, you get pretty fed up. So we recently undertook a massive toy cull and took dozens of near-perfect condition goodies down our local children’s centre - I felt a little like Andy’s mum from Toy Story.

Many toys escaped being donated, and most of these straddle a fine balance between being traditional and educational. Unsurprisingly most of our wooden toys made the cut and stayed. They’re so much more robust and timeless than their plastic cousins.

ASDA Wooden Toys

So when ASDA recently got in touch and offered me a chance to review some pieces from the George at ASDA brand new wooden toy collection, I couldn’t resist. Both Heidi and Dexter got some fabulous new toys and I’m chuffed to bits with them.

To start - I picked the 5 in 1 activity cube for the littlest explorer in our house.

This offers so much to engage tiny brains. On each side of the cube is a new game and a new challenge. On one side Heidi is treated to some spinny wooden numbered discs. Although she has little understanding of what these mean, she loves spinning them around and studying the brightly coloured images.

Heidi Cube

On side 2, is a child-safe mirror so she can preen herself. Mirrors have long since been regarded as great for promoting healthy development in babies. Gazing at their own face will help baby learn how to focus, track images, and explore the amazing things a face can do. It’s a powerful lesson in who’s who and gives baby a break from mum and dads coo’ing faces.

One side 3 are butterfly sliders that help promote early motor skills and problem solving. This is just the right level of complexity for Heidi who will spend up to half an hour twiddling the butterflies and guiding them up and down the painted tree.

Activity Cube

One side 3 are some rolling ball tracks - this is slightly beyond Heidi at the moment as the balls need to be placed into a drop hole at the top of the cube. Unfortunately Heidi is a little too diddy to reach this high. Instead, her big brother is captivated by this, and has been known to throw them at us all too. I do like this element but it is the one side that features something that isn’t affixed to the cube - and, these being balls, there’s a strong likelihood they’ll go missing!

Sat atop the cube is a bead maze similar to those you’ll likely find in a GP surgery or hospital waiting room. These are great for children of all ages; from 6 months to 3 years.

ASDA

What makes this 5 in 1 Activity Cube so utterly fabulous (and ideal for Christmas) is that is requires zero assembly, is a complete bargain at £20, and offers so much versatility. It’s guaranteed to put a smile on mums face too as it looks pretty in a nursery and can double as storage for pesky Lego bricks and the like. You can also flip the lid to protect the bead maze if you’d prefer.

Dexter was treated to a Wooden Work Bench. Unlike the Activity Cube this did require some assembly and I stupidly took this on myself… with a screwdriver that is probably older than me. It took me forever but this is probably a result of not having the correct tools and having an overenthusiastic little helper (Dexter). There is just one part that I haven’t managed to put together and this is the little storage tray that is supposed to live within the legs of the workbench. The holes for me to screw into didn’t appear to be there on one side - still, this doesn’t affect its use.

Dexter Work Bench

The workbench itself features dozens of activities to keep Dex busy. There’s a whopping 33 accessories (from tools to plastic nuts and bolts) all perfectly child-proof and set to stretch his burgeoning motor skills. Whether he’s hammering nails into the workbench, or using his screwdriver to create a wooden empire, he’ll happily chat to himself whilst he sets about his work.

Asda Workbench Toy

There are a few elements he struggles with; removing the nails once they’ve hammered into the wood within an inch of their life, and getting his head around the vice; which are all so complicated we get a few incomprehensible toddler expletives. But I’m happy the toy is helping refine his motor skills and encouraging him to use his imagination. Role play games always seem to be a hit with Dex (I fully expect him to walk into the Queen Vic and onto my tv screen at some point in the not-too-distant future), and this is no exception.

Dex Asda

When it’s time to down tools for the day, the accessories can all be slotted into the workbench so there’ll be no missing bits when it’s time to clock on again in the morning. I must admit I do miss the convenience of the built-in tray - maybe I’ll Craigy to tackle this project when Dexter’s in bed.

At £30 this is fabulous price for such a robust toy. I’ve seen a similar style bench by Janod that is sold in several major retailers at anywhere between £70 to £110 - so you really are getting a bargain with this nifty little number.

Unfortunately every other parents seems to have clocked on to the fact these toys are such great value (their wooden kitchen is priced at a stupendous £40 too), as many are sold out - If want to stock up in time for Chrimbo, you’ll have to be quick! You can view the whole range here.

Just Chillin’ in His Wigwam

Posted on

True to my word, Christmas was a little subdued this year. Despite our very intentional planning and plotting for a low-key day, rather than enjoying the subsequent peace and quiet, it was surprisingly boring here at home on Christmas Day. I definitely won’t ever deliberately aim for a quiet Christmas again as it did feel incredibly lonely spending the day without the wider family around. Christmas just isn’t the same when you’re not surrounded by noisy children, on your second glass of wine by 11am, and you struggle to see the true colour of your carpet for all the glitter, discarded sellotape and biscuit crumbs by the time you drag your weary behind to bed.

To add to the miserable atmosphere, Dexter woke up grumpy, I spent half the day bent over the toilet (none-too-pleased to see my morning sickness had returned), and Craig was quickly reminded just how woeful Christmas television actually is. Craig and I didn’t buy for each other this year so it felt very strange not having anything to unwrap, and poor Dexter worked out pretty quickly that any unwrapping only revealed PJs, jeans and tees, and not any new toys to add to his ever-growing pile.

Wigwam

The single highlight was unveiling his wigwam play tent at 9am. Rather than handing him the box to unwrap, we set it up the night before in the living room for him to enjoy. Given you need a lot of room to set this bad boy up I’m still patting myself on the back for this one. Not only would this be a real struggle to achieve with a uncontrollably curious tot around, it was comedy gold watching Craig do it drunk!

Well it’s been an undeniable hit and I’m so so so grateful to the guys at Garden Games Ltd for sending it to us. They heard a panicking mummy’s distress-call on Twitter and came to the rescue with the one present that actually managed to cut through Dexter’s moodiness and reveal those adorable milk teeth we all know and love.

Wigwams and play tents are one of those enduring success stories that every mum & dad should have in their armory, and for under £55 on Amazon this particular one won’t break the bank either. Not only has it provided the perfect den for Dexter to flick through his favourite monthly read Practical Parenting (I prefer to not regard this as some kind of hint to us), it also hides all those pesky toys and books that are other wise so hard-to-home - I’ve often worried these will end up causing Mr OCD (aka Craig) to have a mental breakdown before he gets to witness the birth of his daughter.

It’s HUGE - standing 1.5 metres tall and spreads out up to 1.4 metres (depending on how you spread out the poles) meaning there’s plenty of room for a bean bag or big comfy cushion inside. We’ve also popped a few favourite board books inside so Dexter has plenty to keep him happy in his little hideaway. Its traditional Indian design makes it ideal for both mini madams and monsters, but also looks inoffensive in rooms with muted colour schemes. Not only this, but it also has a thick water-resistant calico cotton canvas meaning you can pop it out in the garden come the summer months.

It’s currently providing a lovely den in my living room but will eventually live in Dexter’s new bedroom giving him somewhere new to hide when mummy brandishes the scary change bag, or tries to strip him down for a bath!

Dexter absolutely loves it so I’d like to personally thank Garden Games from the bottom of my heart - you guys saved Christmas.

I was not asked to write this post, the wigwam was a gift - but I’m so chuffed to bits with it I simply had to share this.

Christmas Gifts for the Entire Family at Treat Republic

A huge box of goodies arrived on my doorstep a few weeks ago! These were gifts I’d handpicked from Treat Republic’s newest additions. Knowing just how much I’m struggling to get out and about hauling my ever-increasing bump around, they wanted to see if their website could help me tick a few presents off my Christmas list this year. It’s such a lovely gesture, it bought a little tear to my eye and I’m so grateful.

As Treat Republic is my all-time favourite online gift shop for quirky and fabulous bits and bobs, I managed to get some really lovely presents for my dad and his wife, Dexter and Craig. To be honest, I could have just got everything from there as there are plenty of Christmas gifts for the entire family at Treat Republic! I must admit, it does feel a little strange blogging about them before Christmas Day, but my family are under strict instructions not to read this post so hopefully it won’t spoil the surprise!

First up I picked some gifts for my dad and his very lovely wife. We don’t see them anywhere near as much as we should but I talk to my dad on the phone every week. He’s had some good news recently and has obtained a degree in Social Care. I’m so proud of him as this is something he’s wanted to achieve for many years.

I’m sure he’d raise his eyebrows at what I’m about to say, but they remind me of the couple from The Good Life. They grow their own potatoes and olives, and encourage wildlife into their garden. It all sounds very twee, but to be honest, you’re just as likely to see them having a cheeky glass of wine in the garden as you are doing any actual work!

For them, I therefore choose something really lovely for the garden. I’ve been raving about Treat Republic’s ridiculously cute watering cans for months now. And now I’ve actually got to see one up close. I choose the Lucky Elephant (£24.99) for my dad and he’s absolutely lovely. These beautiful watering cans recently featured in ITV’s This Morning’s Christmas Gift Guide for Women and rightly so. Each one in the series is meticulously handcrafted making them extra special in my opinion. They’re also perfectly sized for indoor use too and will look very lovely sat guarding your windowsill.

Speaking of windowsills (see what I did there?) I also got them this cast iron double bird bath (£10.99) to sit in view of their kitchen window. They already have an enormous feeder out there that seems to attract all the pigeons in Fareham rather than the garden birds they probably had intended. This miniature bird bath will look very cute alongside it… and I can’t wait to see if a pigeon attempts to plonk his bum in it.

For my long-suffering other half (Craig) I chose an indoor herb allotment (£24.99) to ease us gently into our very own grow-your-own empire. Craig loves cooking and seems to spend a fortune on pots of spices and herbs. He’s always saying things taste better fresh, so I’ve taken him at his word and am hoping to make a Diarmuid Gavin out of him! Given our new house has a bay window in the kitchen, we also have an enormous windowsill to fill - this will look absolutely adorable as a centerpiece and I can’t wait to get started. Just look how cute this is?!!!

Indoor Herb Allotment

A little shed houses all those necessary bits and pieces for sewing and growing his plants. Whilst a large fenced off garden is made up of three plant pots each containing soil so the gift can be used straight away.

As an additional little stocking filler, I also got him a personalised keyring bottle opener (£9.99) with a cute mini torch. I’m hoping this will come in handy when he stumbles home from the pub and struggles to get his key in the lock! Best of all, it comes in a cute little case making it super easy to wrap! > Well thought-out Treat Republic!

Bottle Opener Keyring

For the little man in my life (Dexter) we choose a fabulous Jute Santa Sack (4 designs available at £12.99 each). We’ve wanted one of these for ages as Craig remembers having one when he was little and wants to carry on the tradition. It’s surprisingly roomy so big enough to hold anything Santa might decide to treat him to, and has that gorgeous natural sack smell. It also has a very cute Reindeer mail stamp so Dexter knows the gifts have come directly from Father Christmas himself! Okay… I’ll admit I stuffed the sack with sofa cushions for this pic as I haven’t actually bought him anything yet!!!

We also got him an adorable monkey hat and mitten set (£12.99) to keep him nice and snug in the winter months. He looks awesome in these knitted sets and has already been rocking an owl version. We’re forever calling him our little monkey so it will be lovely to see him in it. It’s super soft and has handy ear flaps to keep them warm.

So that’s my selection of the best new gifts available on Treat Republic. There are, of course, TONS more to choose from for the special people (and pets!) in your life so well worth heading on over to their Pinterest page if you’re stuck for ideas. They’re also on Facebook and of course Twitter if you’re feeling lazy and want them to come up with some suggestions for you!

If you’ve enjoyed reading this post you can also check out my previous reviews of Treat Republic’s new baby gifts (I dare you not to feel broody when you read this), and our stunning personalised cheeseboard if you’re buying for a keen chef.

DISCLAIMER: As mentioned above, Treat Republic and I are old friends. They kindly sent me these gifts (free of charge) but I wouldn’t tell you something is lovely if it isn’t. All thoughts, opinions and any subsequent gushing is my own.
