“I love wine, wine is my friend” - An I Heart Wines review (Pinot Grigio)

Okay, okay - with that title, I’ve just let slip I like Big Brother. Please don’t judge me too harshly - at the end of a long day parenting my two munchkins, I need to watch something that doesn’t require too much thought. I also need deserve a few glasses of wine to kill off the stress of the day.

In fact, wine isn’t just my friend, it’s something I’m obsessive about. I love discovering upcoming vineyards, touring regions, and continuing on in my quest to find a Chilean wine that doesn’t give me a migraine. We’re signed up to wine subscription boxes, receive regular e-newsletters from vineyards, and have a wine rack brimming with vintage wines we seem to never have an occasion to open. Yep, I’m an unapologetic wine snob.

Craig enjoys a good bottle too - but he’s more partial to red (and could bore you to death with what he know about Rioja, and little else!). He’s pretty clueless on his whites though and dreads me asking him to grab a bottle on the way home from work. He’ll call me at least 3 times from the alcohol aisle to query the labels, and comes home biting his lip when I take the first sip. It’s because I’m fussy. Even worse, I’m fussier depending on my mood.

I Heart Pinot Grigio - I Heart Wines

I heart wines is an exciting new range of great quality, fruit-driven wines in standout, innovative and iconic packaging. Currently stocked at a number of selected retailers and public houses (such as Tesco, Hungry Horse, NISA and Sainsbury’s) they’re quickly gathering momentum as the new kids on the block. A mid-priced range at around £6.49 per bottle, they’re taking on brands such as Stowells, Hardy’s and Echo Falls.

I was recently asked if I’d like to try a sample, and it took me all of 10 seconds to say yes. Perhaps selfishly, I plumped for I heart Pinot Grigio because I love it, and Craig doesn’t (so he wouldn’t get a look in).

Why do we ♥ our Pinot Grigio? True to style showing delicate citrus aromas and lemon and lime flavours it is light, dry and crisp making it perfect to drink on its own. We think you will ♥ it as much as we do!

Wine of Hungary

Alcohol 11.5%

This was a bit of grower for me. First sips were powerful and zesty, almost bitter. With time however, this wine made a hell of a lot more sense. As my palette acclimatised to it, it was fresh, pleasing and finely balanced. It’s a tricky thing describing wine, but the most notable thing for me is that the grapes tasted riper and fuller than other mid-priced Pinots I’ve drank. Going one step beyond chilled and adding a few ice cubes to the mix, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were sipping pummeled white grapes fresh from the Nutribullet.

This is pretty typically of Hungarian Pinots. Chalky soils in the Eytek region, combined with fertile forest brown soils (with high clay content) from the South part of Lake Balaton culminate in crisp and fresh wines. The Hungarian climate is well-suited to vines, with a long growing season ensuring perfectly ripe fruit. The result is a more mature tipple, with grapes sill retaining their vibrancy long after fermentation.

It doesn’t get boring mid bottle either. You’re constantly hitting new aromas and the citrus makes your palette cartwheel a little as it comes into contact with more of your tongue. I enjoyed mine with a chicken salad and the combination was pretty much perfect - I’d also recommend it as an accompaniment to sushi as it can hold its own against stronger flavours.

My verdict? - I LOVED it. Whether you’re basking in the summer sun, need something light to partner with lunchtime dishes, or just gossiping with the girlies - it won’t be a disappointment. I can’t wait to try more of the range and see if they deliver half as well as this.

How Having A Family Pet Aids Child Development

Posted on

It goes without saying that a pet can bring so much to a home. They become part of your family offering companionship, unconditional love and a fun cuddly playmate! But it also goes far beyond this. They will actually help your child learn skills for later in life and aid their development in ways you may not have realised.

Animals are beneficial for your child and yourself, providing a more harmonious family dynamic and lowering stress for everyone. They have so many benefits in fact, that horses are used for ‘equine therapy’, whereby they facilitate in improving the emotional well being of both children and adults. Likewise, studies have shown that children with autism have made substantial progress related to social interaction when they spend time with a pet.

My old cat, Billy. Much missed.

If having a young child has made you weigh up the pros and cons of having a pet, here are a few reasons to add to your pros list! Pets are not only a welcome addition to your home they are actually beneficial to the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of your young children.

  • Your pet will teach your child to care for something other than themselves as well as responsibility, which will grow confidence from having something that relies on them. Are they hungry? Do they need to go outside? Do they require some attention? As kids learn their pet’s needs it will also teach them empathy, as they think about what they can do to help.
  • A fun learning experience that teaches them simple tasks, from keeping their water or food bowl topped up to grooming or walking them.
  • They become a child’s best friend, offering a confidant when they feel no one else will listen. They provide comfort; when they are sad or angry they can turn to their pets for support without receiving any judgment.
  • Socialises them and increase verbal skills. Just by being there your pet offers your child the opportunity to practice socialising and talking with another beings.
  • Keeps them healthy, outside running around, not always inside sitting in front of the TV or a computer game.
  • The pet will also help them to develop self-esteem from the praise they receive for looking after them. Studies have also shown that animals can boost academic skills, with pets being a far better reading companion for a child to practice with than an adult.

Your son or daughter’s development can be aided by a range of pets, in particular the much loved pooch! You know the saying dog is man’s best friend, and it’s true they form a bond that you just can’t get with a goldfish!

If you’d like to be greeted by a wagging tail every time you enter the room then check out the Freeads Puppies for sale listings to start the process to becoming a dog owner. Whether you go for a Labrador or a Chihuahua, make sure you look into it thoroughly as a pet is a huge commitment and you need to ensure you get the right one for you. However, once you have found the appropriate addition to your family, the joy and benefits of having a pet will last for years.

GIVEAWAY & REVIEW: Win a bouquet of flowers from Flora Queen (CD: 10/07/2015)

I usually have fresh cut flowers on display in my home. I can’t pretend I’m too original with our choices as we usually always plump for gladioli or sunflowers. We know these both last a good week and are relatively inexpensive to buy from the supermarket. When they’re out of season we almost go into mourning. Our hurricane vase sits there gathering dust, and becoming a haven for spiders!

So when Flora Queen kindly offered us the opportunity to review, I bit their hand off. The chance to have something more adventurous on my windowsill definitely appealed! As we’re due to move soon it feels like I’m constantly surrounded by packing boxes and bubble-wrap, and our once lovely home is a hugely depressing space. So this charming bouquet from Flora Queen has injected a bit of much-needed warmth back into our home.

I picked the Pink Spell bouquet and am delighted with it. Stuffed full of dusky pink roses and crisp blue eryngium blooms, there’s also chrysanthemums, germini and gypsophilia to add plenty of depth. They arrived beautifully wrapped by hand from a local courier. This is my preferred way of receiving flowers as the blooms don’t get damaged inside a box. There was plenty of fresh water and cellophane ruffles to protect the flowers on their journey and they looked perfect on arrival.

Unfortunately, I left the flowers on the windowsill as I was dashing out on a nursery-run when they arrived. Craig then popped home, found them and started arranging them without me. Although he snipped off the ends and de-leafed the stems (he’s well-trained, right?), he’s no florist! Despite this, I still think they look beautiful and they’re still going strong 1.5 weeks later with no signs of wilting.

Sweetness: 12 pink roses from £32 / 20 Stunning Pink Roses from £43 / Burst of Color: red and yellow roses from £32 / Flora Queen Deluxe: 12 roses, chocolates, cava from £34 / Tender Purity: lilies and white roses from £25 / A Perfect Touch: roses & lilies from £27 / Sunset: orange lilies and gerberas from £25 / Blush: pink stargazer lilies from £32 / Pink Smile: pink roses and gerberas from £29

The website is very easy to navigate owing to high res pictures and the ability to search by colour, occasion and flower-type. You can add accessories (vases) and pimp up your blooms to deluxe and premium sizes with one-click. Adding a message and selecting a delivery date is all set from one order screen, and you can pay using all major credit cards and PayPal. There are also a number of hampers and gifts for extra special occasions.

Price-wise, I’m really impressed. I compared a number of premium bouquets to rival online florists and found Flora Queen to be some 15% cheaper on average - that’s quite some saving. They also specialise in international orders (delivering to some 90 countries) so you can still treat your partner when she’s away on business. Rush and weekend orders are outsourced to local florists which means all stress is taken out of the ordering process, your flowers don’t have far to travel, and delivery is hand-to-hand. Don’t worry, Flora Queen are picky about the florists they partner with to ensure you get a quality bouquet that meets their strict criteria.

All in all, I’m absolutely delighted with my flowers and would definitely use Flora Queen again. The ordering process, quality and longevity of the blooms is simply superior to other online florists I’ve tried, and I’m really impressed with the communication and commitment to making orders extra special.
