32 Weeks Pregnant!

Posted on

… And it’s taking forever! Given I’ve had a severe case of insomnia over the last few weeks, the days seem to be taking twice as long. I’m not sure why I can’t sleep but I can guess at anxiety - I know I’ve been over-the-top upset about name choices. Stupid I know. I can just see us repeating the same mistake we made with Dexter and bickering at the registry office! It’s so much responsibility picking a name for someone to live with for the rest of their lives; something cool, something unique. something that can be shortened. something that sounds great on a CV, something an Olympian might be called…

Then there’s the usual niggling feeling that something might be wrong with her. Of course we’ll love her whatever the future holds, but every mother wants a healthy baby. I get incredibly panicky about all the times I’ve forgotten to take a vitamin tablet, or had a half a lager with my dinner. Then there’s the times I haven’t eaten my broccoli as I’d run out of gravy… it’s all very ridiculous.

Of course One Born Every Minute also started again this week and I defy any pregnant woman not to watch it. Although I tell myself it’s all good research, it does scare me to death. One of this week’s couples (Michelle and Micheal) had me inches from the television screen sobbing as he missed his daughter’s birth. As Craig plans on working until the last-minute and is often 100 miles from home, it’s got me worrying that I won’t have a familiar face in the room either. Given he’s also teasing me about going to his school reunion the week I’m due, I have this fear he’ll be staggering through the hospital stinking of beer and insulting all the midwives! If it’s going to happen to anyone, it’ll happen to us.

Physically, my sciatica has been a little better this week, but I’m still on the loo every 5 minutes. My boobs have also ramped up their milk-making endeavours with the occasional leak (I told you pregnancy was ugly). My stretch marks are also getting more and more pronounced and I’ve grown a double chin overnight. I wouldn’t mind any of these transformations, but walking around The Baby Show this week and seeing so many beautiful women who have kept up the spray tans, freshly-styled hair and full face of slap, I’m feeling like the frumpiest mum-to-be in the world. I’ve made a mental note to at least waddle to the beautician for a wax before the big day. Let’s face it, what we don’t see on One Born Every Minute is the midwives giggling about the lady gardens they’ve encountered that day in the staff room!

Apparently, baby is around 4lbs and 18 inches at this point, and it’s still slightly too early to rush down to Holland and Barrett for raspberry tea. She’s cramming in all the study time she can to perfect those survival skills she’ll need to thrive outside the womb — from swallowing and breathing to kicking and sucking. She also looks less opaque now and her skin colour is beginning to look more like her mum and dads (and less like Casper) - great stuff.

Just hurry Mini Madam. Mummy has had enough. I’d much rather be up at 3am nursing you, than watching television for the hard of hearing. Oh and if you can pick a side and stick to it at night it would be really helpful.

Getting Your Garden Summer Ready

Posted on

We moved house recently for a variety of reasons. Of course, the most obvious by far was the impending arrival of Mini Madam and the extra space upstairs, but the garden was also a major draw for us. It’s not huge, probably similar in size (or even smaller) than the one we had before, but it is infinitely more child-friendly and far easier to maintain. As soon as I saw it, I just knew it would make the ideal party garden - I already have grand ambitions for family BBQs, mini firework displays and I also plan to use it for Dexter’s birthday party in May.

There’s some way to go before it’s decked out for social occasions. Although we were fortunate enough to dodge the storms and resulting floods, it’s still experiencing a winter-hangover and needs a bit of tlc. Luckily all the groundwork is done - we have some great decking which just needs child-proofing for Dexter, and we already have sliding doors (only slightly less impressive than these works of art from Express Bi-Folding Doors) which run about half the length of our lounge. I can’t wait to fling these open in summer and spend my days barefoot with the children.

Right now I’m hatching a money-no-object master-plan to get the rest of the garden ship-shape to cater for all the family - that’s both boozy parties and Punch & Judy shows to you and me! I thought I’d share it in case your beginning to think about getting your garden summer ready too.

For the Children

Pinterest has some fabulous ideas to create a sensory garden for little ones. Although some of these are clearly over ambitious for our tiny garden, there are some I plan on re-creating. The secret is all in the detail with tiny fairy doors pinned to plant pots, monogram planters and cool little zones for them to call their own.

Introducing a slice of hobbity-fairyness to your garden needn’t cost the earth either. You can make tiny benches out of twigs, fairy doors from ice lolly sticks, and magical houses from reclaimed bird houses.

Fairy Garden

The lawn area will also be the kids domain. There’s no shortage of adorable wigwams (robust enough for outside use) in online nursery boutiques at the moment (the one featured below is from gltc and currently a tiny £85). I also love all the traditional wooden play equipment for children such as sandboxes, swings and water tables - plastic might be more practical but wood just looks so gorgeous. There’s also plenty of scope to upcycle from old, or source from your local reclamation yard too to keep costs down. Finally, using old toys as planters brings an element of interest for your children without losing colour for the adults. Kids Garden Ideas

For the Adults

Again, there’s a lot to be said for DIY garden design. Quirky little areas built solely to house tools (love, love, love the zombie weapon store below), mini planters from mason jars, glow in the dark paint and upcycling old coffee tables or fruit pallets for workstations or vintage planters work incredibly well for little cost. I also have this gorgeous elephant watering can from Treat Republic that I cannot wait to rehome in the garden!

Garden Ideas for Adults

The major cost for us this year will be some comfy garden furniture to relax on. I love the idea of mixing all that vintage with contemporary. With so many gorgeous wood, wicker and stone designs, I can’t quite work out which to plump for at the moment. There are also tons of stunning pods and hammocks that we might just be able to squeeze in. My only real concern is the spiders that might take up residence among all those cushions!

Any of the above take your fancy? If so, there’s plenty more to feast your eyes on in my Sensory Gardening Pinterest board. Those fairy doors are genius!

The New Soother Range from Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature

I’m sure it can’t have escaped anyone’s notice that I was at The Baby Show last weekend. I spent most of it on my bottom in stands pretending to take arty photos so I could rest up my poorly swollen feet. I met tons of new brands, and managed to swing by heaps of my favourite brands too - more on this in an upcoming round-up post.

One thing I did miss however, was the launch event for the new soother range from Tommee Tippee. As a Tommee Tippee Ambassador this was a major blow for us, but I did manage to corner a sales rep at the show for a quick chat and it turns out there was a shiny press pack waiting for me! As I’m just 6 weeks away from meeting Mini Madam, my head is firmly back in ‘new mum’ territory and I’m forever buying up newborn essentials. Any developments from my favourite brands are therefore big news.

So it turns out that Tommee Tippee have been watching mums shopping for soothers for some time and discovered two main findings…

  1. Mums struggle to find what they are looking for when buying soothers, with 1 in 3 mums buying on impulse in store
  2. Baby acceptance of soothers is down to trial and error, often with several purchases before finding one baby likes

I can certainly empathise with this. Dexter wasn’t fussed about soothers when he was tiny. I think this was down to a combination of many things. He was hospitalised in his first few weeks with Strep B and given one by the midwives so maybe he subconsciously associates soothers with this experience… whatever the reason, he continually spat out any we gave him. tt soothers

I’m not against soothers though. Research has shown that, used in moderation, they are fabulous as a night aid for providing baby with comfort and security, and can even reduce cot death. Nowadays the majority are also designed by medical professionals and hundreds of hours go into creating a safe and comfortable experience for our little ones to suck upon. This is exactly what the professionals at Tommee Tippee have done with their new soothers. Designed in conjunction with a leading paediatric dentist, they feature a large, long, flat teat which is easier to hold in baby’s mouth (just like a bottle tests) and in tests, the new soother design was accepted first time by more babies. They’re also suitable to use from birth and are designed with an orthopedic silicone teat to support healthy oral development.

But the best thing by far is the new easy to understand packaging. They come in 4 ranges - Fun, Anytime, Night Time and Air with the age suitability clearly displayed. They’re also far more engaging for little people with fun new colours and designs - making it far easier for mum to locate them in cot bedding, under the sofa, under the telly… the list goes on!
