So I had my first ever Mother’s Day on Sunday. It all feels very grown up and a bit fraudulent if I’m honest - I’m so used to Mother’s Day being about my own mum, not me.

It seems my Dexter must have a secret part-time job to afford all the beautiful things he bought me! He must also be watching me very intently when I’m on the laptop as he appears to be very internet savvy too - he must have jumped out of his cot in the night and done some online shopping in order to buy me my presents.

Upon waking, I received a sweet personalised card from Moonpig, and a huge bunch of lilies and cherry blossom (they’re yet to completely flower so the picture doesn’t do them justice). Later he presented me with several books from my favourite authors (amusingly I’m into true-crime and trial books so the content of these is pretty macabre - one is actually about infanticide… hmmm).

Dexter then took us out for a wonderful meal and a few glasses of wine at Cafe Rouge. He was immaculately behaved and played quietly with his toys at the table. He also took great delight in winding up the waiter by continually throwing Charlie (his sock monkey) on the floor when he tried to take our order.

It seems our child has a taste for the finer things and loved munching on the wine list and sampled most of our dishes. He tried Mummy’s delicious Sautéed Mushrooms, and Poulet Breton, and managed a messy slurp of daddy’s French Onion Soup, and some runner beans from Daddy’s Beef Bourguignon. I’m really proud of his willingness to experiment with food - he’s definitely his father’s son.

I had a really fabulous day and am so lucky that my two heroes bent over backwards to make it memorable and special. I’m going to have to work pretty hard to top it for Father’s Day.
