REVIEW: Twirlywoos Run Along Toys from Golden Bear Toys

GoldenBear

Heidi is the world’s more foremost authority on Twirlywoos. She’s has an insatiable appetite for her birdy buddies and will watch episode after episode with rapt attention. If I sing over the theme tune I get looks that could kill, and she won’t sleep unless Toodloo, Great BigHoo, Chickedy and Chick are lined up alongside her in bed. It’s a love that I’m happy to encourage as *popping on my parent hat* I endorse the educational aspect of the show and Heidi’s response to it is just so incredibly sweet and endearing - better to pop this on than have her explore my make-up bag right?

Earlier in the year we were lucky enough to get a first look at Golden Bear’s range of Talking Twirlywoos Plushes and we’re now equally overjoyed to bring you a review of their brand new Twirlywoos Run Along Toys.

Heidi2

Fans of the show will be very used to seeing the Twirlywoos dash around onscreen. Invisible to the human eye, they’re always scurrying out of sight when someone notices strange goings-on thanks to the cheeky foursome. In response to this, Golden Bear Toys have now released Run-Along versions of their awesome plushes, with all the usual trademark squeals and familiar sounds from the show.

We welcomed Run-Along Chickedy last week and she’s been a real hit with both children. Standing tall at some 23cm she’s bigger than the standard plushes and is every inch the cheeky birdy Heidi is so fond of. Just press on the her right hand and she’ll come to life, running and chit-chatting. The button is super easy to press and Heidi (at 20 months) had it mastered in seconds.

Each Twirlywoos character is made from a super soft colourful plush. Their “tufts” are made from soft felt, with polished plastic plastic eyes. The battery pack is squared away inside their tummies and accessible via a velcro opening at the back of the toy. Owing to the fact the Twirlywoos have big squidgy bums and bellies they’re still super cuddly for nighttime snuggles.

I was also pleased to see they came with batteries already installed so you can rip them out of the box and play straight away. To access the battery pack you’ll also need a screwdriver so they’re uber safe for little ones to play with independently. Promoting active play, Heidi & Dexter have had lots of fun mimicking the trademark run with flailing arms - I’ll pop a video of this online when poor Heidi is snotless and feeling better.

DexterT

The box advises Chickedy works better on flat surfaces such as laminate rather than carpet and I have to agree. That said, the children are just as inclined to set him off on carpet to see him fall over - what can I say? - they’re sadistic little things.

If you’re yet to watch the Twirlywoos it’s on every weekday at 09.35 (& repeated at 13:35) on CBeebies. Combining stop-frame animation and live action sequences set in the real world, the lovable foursome have adventures both on and off their boat. In each episode they’ll explore a different age-appropriate concept such as ‘over’, ‘underneath’ and ‘through’, helping your little one gain a better understanding of the world around them. It’s very clever and boasts a seriously catchy theme tune to boot.

REVIEW: In the Night Garden Explore and Learn Musical Activity Table

Posted on

in-the-night-garden-2

Heidi is an In the Night Garden super fan and at 17 months it is still very much a part of our evening routine. I often quip that she’s the world’s foremost authority on the show and if you saw the utter concentration on her face when she watches Iggle Piggle, Makka Pakka, Upsy Daisy & co, you’d understand why. Because of this, there is simply no better toddler to review the In The Night Garden Explore and Learn Musical Activity Table and I was delighted when one arrived in the post a few weeks back. Just the sight of the box had her delirious, clapping and dancing.

ITNGActivityTable1

It’s what I like to call “an activity table with a twist” in that it’s designed to meet so many of your child’s educational needs, yet has life beyond that of conventional toys. Whoever brainstormed this thing in a drab boardroom somewhere, did a truly fantastic job of bringing the show to life for kids, whilst being totally aware of a parent’s quest for longevity.

HeidiINGT

First up, it’s instantly recognisable as being from In the Night Garden with 3 tough and bite-proof mini figurines (Iggle Piggle, Makka Pakka, Upsy Daisy) and iconic scenery (the carousel, bridge and Makka Pakka’s cave) all included with the table. So many character toys only come with one of the characters, forcing mum & dad to buy expensive add-ons so I was pleased to see so many favourites from the show included. Better yet, all are chunky pieces meaning your child is encouraged to maneuver them into position on the table top themselves (so less pestering of mum & dad).

IgglePiggleBridge

This is perfect for imaginative play as the bandstand and the bridge have foot holes in them so the characters can be placed in them securely. The Makka Pakka figurine also fits nicely inside his cave so your child can pop him to bed.

MakkaPakkaCave

The actual table top can be played with on any surface as you can lift it from the table making it both accessible for those little ones yet to master standing, and also fully portable for taking to restaurants or grandmas.

InTheNightGardenToy

The table itself has four sturdy plastic legs that are easy to snap into position. This provides a stable surface for younger tots to practice pulling themselves up - and trust me they’ll want to when they figure out what’s up there! I also love that the legs have storage space for the figurines, and the top of the table can be lifted up to reveal secret storage space for all of the other bits. Not only does this transform the toy into a multipurpose functional wipe-clean table, it also means you can stash away all the bits that might otherwise go missing.

INTGActivityTableLegs1

At 17 months, Heidi is the perfect age to explore all the interactive bits. 3 x AA batteries (not included) power a tons of fun games, music and recognisable sounds from the show. Heidi can flip the storybook to hear the narrator from the show tell her a mini story, or bash the 5 light-up stepping stones with the squeaky hammer to reveal sounds and songs associated with the characters (Yes My Name is Iggle Piggle, Upsy Daisy Here I Come, & Makka Pakka Woo). There’s also a wind-up bandstand which plays the iconic theme tune. Switching to the second setting, tapping the stones with hand or hammer reveals 5 electronic learning games including teaching numbers, teaching colours and shapes, silly sounds, Can you find? and Chase the lights - perfect as your child’s logic and reasoning skills begin to progress.

SteppingStones

Currently the activity setting is a little advanced for my Mini Madam as she doesn’t understand the instructions, yet this only further evidences how the toy will grow with your child.

Sizewise the table is perfect. It’s compact enough to neatly stowed away at the end of an evening, but also the perfect height for smaller children to stand and play, and larger children to kneel at. Heidi has a little armchair and she can eat at the table comfortably too, proving just how versatile this toy can be.

DexHeidi

My only niggle is the squeaky hammer. Both of my children (at 1.5yrs and 3yrs) have popped this in their mouths and I can’t see this lasting much longer if they continue to bite into it. They’ve also hit each other with it a few times so I’ve had to confiscate it. In my opinion it’s not really necessary and the toy is just as good without it - children can use their hands to bash the stepping stones instead.

Overall the table is just delightful, it’s a true multifunctional toy with tons of activities, and a life beyond play as a sturdy table for eating or crafting. If you have a fan of In The Night Garden then I can’t imagine a better Christmas toy. At £59.99 it would have to a main present but you really are getting great value for money and a toy that will provide endless hours of enjoyment.

Check out goldenbeartoys.com for the full In The Night Garden range including the musical carousel, Ninky Nonk Train & Track set and talking plushes as seen on recent tv adverts!

Fisher-Price Princess Walker Review

fisher-price-logo

So our little princess recently got a right royal treat and has been putting this Fisher-Price Princess Walker through its paces.

IMG_7961 (2)

What is it?

It’s a seriously girlie walker that doubles as a doll’s pushchair with music and lights. A wide, stable base and easy-grasp handle help steady first steps whilst sounds and flashing lights reward every wobbly step. This encourages gross motor development and early role play as your little princess can copy mummy and nurture her own baby.

IMG_7862 (2)

A press of the “magic” wand button rewards baby with fun sounds, while clacker beads and butterfly flip book on the bumper bar help foster fine motor skills.

This walker is recommended for ages 9-36 months with a RRP of £34.99. Stockists include Kiddicare, Toys R Us, Argos and Amazon. Princess Chime Doll sold separately.

What we thought

Steadiness

Heidi has been walking since 7 months and now, at 17 months is regularly taking short trips without a pushchair. Because she’s got this nailed, she isn’t using her walker to practice, rather she prefers to pretend she’s a mummy and use it for role play. Having said that, in terms of steadiness, I’d highly recommend this over traditional push along toys. Dexter used a wooden cart when he was learning and would regularly tip it over or go careering into a wall. This walker acts as an incredibly stable walking aid and will even remain upright if baby attempts to pull themselves up using the handlebar.

PricessWalkerFisherPrice

It’s also suitable on all surfaces from carpet, to grass to wooden flooring and glides with ease over bumpy pavements too. Having tried this out on Heidi’s younger cousins, they also seem to find it easier to stop themselves - rather than find themselves propelled forward uncontrollably as with other walkers.

Assembly

In terms of assembly, Craig had this sorted in a matter of minutes. It’s simply a case of slotting bits together and screwing them into place. No batteries with this one though so you’ll need to purchase 3x AA batteries separately (always worth noting if you’re buying it as a gift).

Interactivity

There’s also exactly the right of amount of interactivity. Having used the ever-popular Vtech First Steps Baby Walker with both children, I did notice they regularly got distracted by all the lights and sounds on the front of the toy. Worse still, they’d lean over the toy whilst walking to activate them meaning they often fell over. As the princess walker makes sounds whilst baby walks, she is more likely to concentrate on her walking.

IMG_7962 (2)

Speaking of the music and sounds, thankfully these aren’t headache-inducing. They can be activated either by pushing the walker, or pressing the heart and there’s a volume control and an off switch, should you need a little peace and quiet.

Heidi loves the butterfly flip book on the front of the stroller and will stand and do this for some time whilst coo’ing at her dolly. It also has four beads to push back and forth and spin and it’s great to watch her master something so fiddly.

Durability

It’s a tough little thing and has survived a right bashing from a jealous Dexter (yep, this isn’t just for girls!). As the wheels protrude out at the front of the toy, if your little one does go headfirst into a wall it won’t mark it.

DexterPrincess

The Princess Chime Doll

This little lady is sold separately but a must-have accompaniment for the walker. Although the walker will support other soft toys and dolls, none fits better than this. Once in, she really stays put so you won’t find yourself forever bending over to retrieve her should you little one take her for an off-road stroll.

She’s super soft (the only plastic is on her tiara) and makes a soft chiming sound when shaken. Again, both Heidi and Dexter enjoy giving her a cuddle!

Princess Chime

In conclusion, these two products in combination with one another would make a fab gift for a little one. As evidenced by both Heidi (17ms) and Dexter (3 years) it offers a whole host of features that will support your child’s early development and grow with them as their capabilities change.
