Although the sun is taking a cheeky break this week, we still have a whole load more to come this summer. We all know fresh air and warm weather are healthy for young children and babies, and help mum & dad maintain their sanity. Small doses of Vitamin D from the sun’s rays are also good for baby’s skin. Yet, it wouldn’t be summer without the press carrying story after story about children getting blistering sunburn. It’s not just babies either, yesterday I read a heartbreaking piece about a young mum that has been given months to live after years of abusing the sun.

It’s well documented that I’m fanatical about my children’s skin, and I’m forever slapping on suncream in a bid to outrun sunburn. I appreciate though, it can be tricky to remember when you’re out and about, especially when you have more than one child to keep an eye on.

This is where SmartSun comes in!

Proudly hailing from Sweden, the SmartSun wristband is a UV indicator, which changes colour when it’s time to reapply suncream or stay out of the sun for the day.

Did you know…?

… That skin cancer is the most common cancer here in the UK, and that 7 people die every day from it. Worse still, over 80% of instances are caused by over-exposure to the sun - that’s to say that many cases are preventable.

SmartSun Disposable UV Indicator Wristbands provide an easy to read indicator of how much UV radiation you have been exposed to. You simply pop on the wristband and apply suncream to both the skin, and the strap. You’ll then check the strap regularly throughout the day; if it’s yellow you are safe in the sun, whilst a beige tint means to pop on more SPF, finally pink advises you to get inside and stay out of the sun.

The band is discreet, comfortable to wear for either adults or children and can be used in and out of both pool and sea water. There’s also a handy instruction leaflet to explain just how simple it is to use. To put it on, you loop the end through the hole provided, with the yellow side facing outwards. The kids weren’t sure what to make of it at first and were like mini Houdini’s trying to rip it off. It withstood a fair bit of tugging and eventually they forgot about it, leaving it free to work its magic.

The colour change is subtle, yet clear enough to alert you when necessary - although I will admit that a more obvious tonal change would be even better. Had my children been a little older, I can imagine them getting excited about taking responsibility for checking the band, and reporting to me when it’s time to act.

Overall, I think this is a fab idea. We used to rely on intuition and in cases of extreme heat, hourly alarms with our iPhones. This is an extra layer of reassurance and more scientific approach, and it certainly can’t hurt.

The Smartsun wristbands are available in packs of 5 priced at £4.99 from www.smartsunuk.co.uk or you can find out more on Facebook or Twitter.

Sun protection for kids made easy: The Sun Mousse review

So yesterday was officially the hottest day of the year and was on a par with Brazil (or so Phil Schofield says) - and I can well believe it. A simple trip to take Dex to nursery left poor Heidi severely dehydrated so she spent the afternoon in bed cradling a bottle of water.

The sun is hard on babies, fact. Sitting outside in my garden I can hear dozens of neighbouring children splashing away in paddling pools and having fun - yet the babies are crying. They can’t voice how much they’re suffering, or even understand why they’re uncomfortable.

Toddlers fare slightly better, but you can’t be too careful with their skin. Their delicate skin simply isn’t mature enough to withstand prolonged sun exposure. If you needed more convincing, studies have shown that the chances of developing skin cancer in later life are raised dramatically if a child gets sunburn - in fact, just one blistering sun burn can double the risk.

Sun Mousse

There’s no shortage of children’s sun care out there. I’ve reviewed several products myself, and am so pleased to see formulations changing and brands considering the needs of children. Not only do you need high SPF and both UVA and UVB protection, you’ll also want to ensure you choose something with a non-sticky and quick drying texture to make it easier to apply on your cream-phobic wriggler. Brands that approach this innovatively always catch my eye so The Sun Mousse was firmly up there as one I wanted to try.

So what is The Sun Mousse?

RRP: £17.99 - Available from Hunter and Health

For kids: SPF 30 & 50 (high) / For grown-ups: SPF 20 (medium) & SPF 30 & 50 (high)

Sun Mousse1

It’s a winner because it’s less fussy and messy than runny creams and greasy sprays. You can pin your child down with one hand and apply with the other without the fear of it dripping on your carpet. One golf-sized blob per limb is more than enough to provide a generous layer of protection.

Moreover its special formula means it rapidly absorbs into the skin’s outer layer, working within the epidermis to provide immediate and lasting UVA and UVB sun protection. It’s doesn’t require a lot of rubbing in, and dries to a transparent finish making it super easy to apply to wriggly toddlers without ruining their clothes.

The non-oily formulation means you won’t be left with an unpleasant sticky residue, but it also allows the skin to breathe, making it the perfect sun protection for both face and body. Its moisturising properties and light texture leave the skin feeling soft and smooth to the touch, and by not clogging the pores, it is also much less likely to cause prickly heat or aggravate other sun-induced allergies.

The press release above also states that sun filters absorb into the skin, making them less likely to be washed away by water, sweat or toweling. This doesn’t make it water resistant so you will need to reapply instantly (unlike Ultrasun). I’m not going to give it too much of a black mark though as Dexter actually enjoys me applying it and my kids aren’t surgically attached to the paddling pool. If you stay away from water it also offers some 6 hours worth of protection.

It’s fragrance-free, there’s no harsh or chemical smell to irritate sensitive skin. There’s also no parabens, perfume or colouring which is incredibly reassuring as my two have eczema-prone skin. For mums and dads battling the same sensitivities, I’m happy to report that this is incredibly gentle and leaves their skin silky smooth at the end of the day.

As it’s a mousse, it comes in a pressurised can. This is compressed however so is diddy enough (150ml) to fit comfortably in school bags and handbags. Naturally, there’s a lid to ensure it doesn’t squirt out and ruin the other bits in your bag. Better still, as it’s an aerosol no bacteria can penetrate into the can, therefore prolonging its shelf-life. This means a single can last up to 3 years if stored away from direct sunlight.

Heidi

We’ve been using the Kids SPF 30 & 50 and are really impressed with it. The kids love the noise as the mousse comes out, and coating their skin in it. Of course it’s a double edged sword as I can’t leave them alone with the can or they’d use it up in one afternoon! If you pop some on Dexter’s hand he’ll chase Heidi around the living room with it, and smear it on her halfing the job for me - bonus!

I’d definitely consider buying again and would wholeheartedly recommend for children of all skin types for at-home use - you just can not be too careful with their skin. #TravellingWithKids Ultrasun Professional Sun Protection Review

It’s the same old thing every year. The kids get coated in suncream and might as well be wearing burkas to protect their little bodies from the sun… yet poor old mummy gets burnt. It’s a sad mix of forgetfulness, bravado and laziness. I’m not one of those that coats her body in Johnson’s Baby Oil then acts surprised when it bubbles away before her eyes, I’m not even a sun worshipper!, but my pasty white skin seems to attract the sun’s rays like Angelina Jolie attracts men. Right now my cleavage is peeling and my back is burnt and itchy.

Yet the children have a pleasant colour on their cheeks and only the faintest of lines to indicate where tees and shorts ended. It’s testament to the absolutely brilliant sun protection we were sent to try by Ultrasun Professional Sun Protection.

IMG_4533

Yep, a few days before we left, we were sent bottles of SPF 30 & 50 to smother on the kids. Given there was plenty to go around for Craig & I, I only have myself to blame for returning to the UK looking like Elmo from The Muppet Show. Ultrasun is a pleasure to apply and worked so brilliantly on the kids, I’m now cursing myself for not having fake tanned and having left the sun loungers alone.

So who are Ultrasun, and what makes them so brilliant for families?

Ultrasun

Ultrasun is a Swiss brand and a bit of a revelation due to its photostable once-a-day application sun protection range. Yes, I said once-a-day. A generous layer of this in the morning will see you right through until sundown. It’s patented liposome tenchnology provides water resistant protection against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. Better yet, it’s hypoallergenic and free from emulsifiers and perfume making it ideal for use on really sensitive skin and (you guessed it) babies.

The consistency is refreshing compared to high street brands. It’s thick and creamy, completely non-greasy and rubs in beautifully without leaving white marks on clothes. The kids are left with a beautiful sheen and smelling really pleasant. If you’ve ever tried a supermarket own brand, you know just how horrid sun protection can smell, and it can be a real feat to wash off your hands after applying. With Ultrasun, the kids were happy to have us cream them up, didn’t wriggle away under our grip and we didn’t need to wash our hands afterwards - Massive thumbs up from us.

IMG_4593

It’s also fully water-resistant and you can easily appreciate this in the pool. I was surprised that you can actually see the skin repel water so you know it’s still performing. For habits sake I still reapplied diligently after a swim, but the bottle states this will still do its thing after towel drying. I can’t quite get my head around how this is possible but I can’t fault it. The heat and sun were fierce in Lanzarote and the kids were out playing for most of the day - yet their skin is completely burn-free and sun-kissed.

Holiday

With one 150ml bottle of Family SPF 30 priced at £25 (the Extreme SPF 50 is £20 for 100mls, £40 for 400mls) some might balk at the price. But trust me, allowing your children to burn in the sun will result in sleepless nights, sickness and many tears. I’ve also popped this into Google and found some cheaper deals in Debenhams and allbeauty.com. Further still, one 150ml bottle will provide sun protection for one person up to two weeks making it’s price tag seem far more reasonable.

Housed in an airless pump dispenser to prevent contamination and deterioration, the bottle will also survive being tossed around in the pool and buried at the beach. This also means each product has a mammoth shelf-life of two years too (most will average just six months).

I was also sent a SPF 30 tinted moisturiser for the face and fell instantly in love with it. My face is the only area that genuinely coped in the Lanzarote sun and I have to credit Ultrasun for this. It’s heavy-duty yet beautifully lightweight formulation replaced my normal morning moisturiser and BB cream and glided effortlessly onto my skin. A quick sweep of bronzer over the top and I was ready for a day in the sun.

FACE

With light reflecting particles, anti-aging enzyme Ectoin and Vitamin E it’s nourishing and soothing. It also boasts revitalising properties in the form of enzyme Superoxide Dismutase to neutralise skin damaging free radicals from sun exposure, and Boron Nitride to plump and firm. 50mls will cost £26 and it’s truly worth every penny. I can cover the sunburn on my boobs, but not on my face!
