How to Pull Off Vampire Red Nails & Lips

Posted on

I’m a HUGE fan of blood red nails. Ever since Uma Thurman perfected the look on Pulp Fiction, short vampy nails seem to make a comeback year after year.

It’s a tradition of mine to trim down my nails when autumn hits to keep them strong and in tip top condition. Colder weather slows circulation and causes slow nail growth (hence the reason they grow so quickly when you’re on holiday) - autumn / winter is therefore the perfect time for a spot of re-shaping. Although blunt nails can often look bitten and unsophisticated, a smattering of red will inject some much-needed glamour for the fashion-conscious.

Get the Look: NAILS

Although it’s widely acknowledged that Chanel’s Rouge Noir is the ultimate for those who take the vamp brief seriously (Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett and Emma Watson), NARS’s Jungle Red is the perfect compromise for those who can’t pull this off. It’ll work well for evenings out, job interviews and or shopping trips (just remember to keep it in your handbags for any emergency touch-ups) - It’s your ultimate wearable daredevil red.

Applying NARS’s recently re-formulated nail polish is like dipping your nails in liquid velvet. The flat contoured brush makes application a cinch, and the colour is literally Knockout. As with any red, you need two coats to make your nails truly opaque, but you get a consistent colour from nail to nail that you often fail to achieve with other brands; with dark shades you often see a slight variation between nails as you over/under load your brush. My nails were dry enough to carry on with normal life within 30 minutes too, so great for quick manicures.

NARS’s little improvements with the brush and removable outer cap make their nail polishes so much to easier use than the old style. The new formulation (sans toluene and formaldehyde) promises “flexible, high gloss finish for a freshly-painted look that lasts”. They’ve popped in resins and polymers for improved wear and to strengthen nails and it shows - mine has also been on for 5 days now (with an O.P.I topcoat) and is only just beginning to show signs of wear (that’s pretty good for me as a busy mother of two who spends her life with her hands in a washing-up bowl or collapsing buggies).

Get the Look: CUTICLES

I’ve also used Nailtiques Cuticle and Skin Gel to repair any cracks and soften them for shaping. Keeping cuticles moisturised is important; I read somewhere years ago that your cuticles are little soldiers, standing guard to protect the nail from infections. But just as a real soldier may perform poorly when ill or out of shape, dry cuticles tend to fall down on their jobs. If you want nails to grow healthy, strong and long without bending or cracking; your cuticles are the best place to start.

Nailtiques burst onto the nail-care scene in the 90s with line of prescribed, salon-tested products that promote natural nail growth, strength and moisture retention. They boast their products help combat multiple nail problems with six specially formulated protein strengths that are critical in the development and maintenance of healthy, natural nails. This is my first ever Nailtiques product and I’m fairly pleased with it.

Straight off the bat I’d say the consistency isn’t at all gel-like. It’s a thick, concentrated glycerin and aloe enriched cream that nourishes and repairs dry and cracked skin and cuticles. You simply massage sparingly into your nails and cuticles every night before bed and let it soothe damaged skin as you sleep. It’s slightly greasy upon application and the scent is a little pungent, but it does deliver fast results; the dry skin around my nails is vastly improved after just one week’s use.

Okay the smell is off-putting and the greasy texture can be annoying if you’re a nighttime texter or preener. It’s definitely tempting to wash your hands afterwards to pick up your iPhone or book, but stick with it and it quickly becomes a relaxing routine before bed. It is also an excellent treatment for dry elbows and knees and great for nail biters given the smell would put off even the keenest of chompers.

To pull these nails off, it’s good to be aware of how often your hands come into contact with your face. Teaming red nails with pink lipstick, rose blush and blue eye shadow just doesn’t work and will make you look like a pre-teen who has raided mummy’s make-up stash. You’re best pairing it with a red lipstick like Chanel’s classic Pirate or MAC’s high-impact Ruby Woo. Keep eyes simple with a swipe of eyeliner, mascara and a smidgen of gold shimmer on your eyelids to attract the light. Go easy with the bronzer too - we’re aiming for Taylor Swift / Cate Blanchett / Dita von Teese / not Kate Moss circa 1990.

Voila! Red carpet chic in under one hour!

Lindam & Munchkin: Nightlights & Room Blocking

Now Littlest Mills is on the move, we’ve been on a baby-proofing mission. Heidi is now super fast at crawling and will pull herself up in a sort of tripod action to sit upright - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It must be incredibly tiring for her as she’s in one of those limbo states where she’s keen to try things, but not yet able to master them.

Dexter is also embarking on mission of epic proportions and the potty has made an appearance. With this comes a whole host of problems; nighttime dashes and an uncomfortable fascination with the toilet.

So who have we turned to? Who else but the masters of baby & toddler safety; Lindam.

Yep, our house is now a Lindam & Munchkin show home. There’s very little on their website that we don’t own! Of course, as a Munchkin & Lindam ambassador, it’s my job to put their smart and fun collection through its paces, and we’ve certainly done that! Here are just a few of my favourite things:

Nightlights ff

This Automatic Nursery Safety Sensor Light is fabulous for Mini Madam. It plugs into the mains so you’re not faffing around with batteries and has a long lifespan (provides over 10,000 hours of light). Better yet, you don’t need to turn it off, as it has a dusk’til dawn sensor; it detects light levels and will automatically switch on at dusk and off at dawn. Safety-wise, an LED bulb ensures the light remains cool to touch at all times.

It provides a soft blue light which is reassuring for Heidi and handy for us; If we pop our heads around the door we can spot her easily among her teddies and Galt blocks. When she’s more accustomed to her big girl room, this light will live on the landing providing a guiding light for a toilet-savvy Dexter for those nighttime wees.

Dexter

Speaking of nighttime wees… Dexter’s Light my Way Portable Nightlight is one of those must-have toddler essentials. It’s easy for chunky fingers to operate, switches itself off after 20 minutes and has a nifty little handle for finding the bathroom (or mum & dad) in the dark.

This is Dexter’s go-to product at bedtimes - he uses it to read or play in bed, and will often fall asleep with it inches from his head. There are no sharp bits to jab him awake and the LED light remains cool to touch at all times. Although it’s 100% battery-operated, it comes with 3AAA batteries and we haven’t had to change them (in nearly 4 months!).

(£9.98 from the Munchkin / Lindam website)

Room-blocking

gate

The Sure Shut Orto has been my saviour now Mini Madam is chasing after her brother everywhere. In fact, it’s been with us now for 2 years and has been invaluable throughout. Whether it’s sealing off the stairs, the kitchen or their rooms, it’s strong, robust and has never let us down. It’s a fully adjustable pressure gate that will fit openings between 75cm to 82cm (and can be extended up to 138cm with the use of separate extensions). As we rent our home this means no drilling into door frames and skirting boards. It can also be fitted in seconds (all tools come provided).

The best bit by far is the automatic closure. It features a gravity-fed hinge so the gate can close from any position as soon as the handle is released. You can also open it inwards and outwards depending on which way you’re approaching the gate (so is far less fussy than others we’ve come across). We can open it with one hand whilst our little people stare on in amazement - trust me Dexter’s had a very good go at opening it himself with zero success.

(£27.99 from the Munchkins / Lindam website)

Flexi

For Dexter’s room, the Flexiguard works a treat. I hate seeing him upset behind bars so this provides him with a soft surface to rally against at bedtimes. It’s four point pressure corner adjusters ensure a snug fit in openings from 71cm to 92cm and it can be fitted in seconds. I like that I can take it off easily and quickly to whisk him to the loo, then pop it back on at night when I need him to stay put.

The best bit? It’s lightweight and comes with a travel bag for easy transportation. Simply roll it up and sling it over your shoulder to take to grandmas or a friend’s house for coffee - with no tell tale marks that it’s even been there when you leave - Genius, just genius.

(£27.99 from the Munchkin / Lindam website)

Next on my hitlist are these seriously cool bath time toys - I’m sure I’ll be reporting on these soon.

Bathtime

Bath Fun Bubble Blower £10.98 / Star Fountain £7.99 / Bath Fun Monster Truck £6.99 / Massaging Teether £6.99 / 36 Bath Letters and Numbers £6.48 / Gone Fishin’ Bath Toy £7.98

#OpBabyWeight: Exante Diet review: Not for me

Posted on

55d0ecc7b1801e51e43bbcbe6dcffcc7

I was kindly sent a huge envelope stuffed full of Exante samples way back in late August, and it’s taken me this long to wade through them. I feel slightly apprehensive about this one because I’ve actually dipped in and out of it and haven’t stuck to the plan at all.

But then I asked myself why? Why did I find it so hard to stick to?

I think in order for a ‘paid-for’ diet plan to be successful, they have to make their food, drinks, hell… even their entire brand messaging compelling. Too many brands fixate on before and after pics, cheesy ‘we’re all in it together’ advertising or scientific jargon. All a busy woman (or man for that matter) really wants is something easy to prepare and delicious. That’s what we pay for, or we’d all simply buy a recipe book and make it ourselves. We want to forget we’re dieting.

On the face it, Exante Diet offered some of this. Take 1 sachet 3 times a day. How simple and uncomplicated is that?!

mixed-pack-content

But therein lies the problem. Every time we reach for a sachet and whisk its contents into something to stop our stomachs cramping from hunger, we’re very consciously dieting. For the first few days it’s novel, even satisfying, but then you quickly tire of having to wash up your whisk or blender in preparation for your next one. You start to crave something solid. Your child’s Heinz Biscotti starts to literally call to you from the kitchen cupboard.

Its website doesn’t help. Sure, there’s no bright and cheerful tat on the homepage, but it’s gone too far the other way; It’s positively boring. And then there’s the jargon. Before selecting a diet plan we’re asked to calculate our BMI (cue scales, a tape measure and asking the bloke how tall he thinks you are) then we select one of these hugely appealing options:

Capture

It gets no better when you click on your chosen plan:

Capture1

You visit the shop and still there are no sexy food pics to tempt you. Instead you’re bombarded with more choices; 4 week bumper packs, boxes of 50, stater packs… Boxes of what??? I want to know what this diet entails. When you eventually do get to the food pictures they’re too little and the descriptions are dour and unappetizing (take this example from a Box-of-50 selection):

index

I should point out that I wasn’t sent the above product. I was sent sachets of shakes, maple syrup pancakes, tomato and basil soup, pasta carbonara, chicken curry and various other meals. This wasn’t the fault of the PR company I received them through - she was lovely and professional from start to finish. But it’s pretty hard to sex up what is essentially an indefinite stint of powder. In fact I didn’t even look at the website (entirely deliberately) beforehand so this was my first experience of the brand.

Now to taste. I can’t fault the shakes. They were thick, delicious and filling. There are tons of flavours too: Banana, Chocolate, Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate Mint, Toffee Caramel, Hazelnut, White Chocolate & Raspberry, Cherries & Berries, Lemon & Raspberry, Christmas Pudding… they really have this sewn up. Handily they don’t require milk either, just cool water and a whisk. For convenience I noticed they also have Shake and Go options. If I’d received 3 weeks worth of these, I might have stood a chance of lasting a week.

But I didn’t.

The soups were hit and miss. I quite liked the tomato and herb flavours but the mushroom flavour (usually a favourite of mine) was inedible. There was a thick taste of chalk and this was despite vigorous whisking. As you’re only instructed to use 200/250mls of water there’s no diluting it further either.

002

There’s no dressing this one up: The offending Mushroom Soup

Dinner-wise I only tried a handful of them as these were all I was provided with. They taste heavily salted and look pretty unappetising. But then what do you expect of powder stirred then blitzed with a microwave. It’s pretty hard to be enthusistic.

030

The best I could do photography-wise: The Pasta Carbonara

Now to price, there’s no denying this is one of the most affordable diet options out there. But even this is hard to decipher. A 4 week box of pre-selected shakes, bars, soups and hot meals from the across the range is listed at £150 RRP but there’s currently an offer for 27% discount (random number) which takes it to £109.99. THEN there’s a mystery discount code to apply at the checkout. Having tried this I received a further £33 off the total bringing it to £76.99. Whether this “mystery discount” is unique to me or pot luck I have no idea.

My point? It’s confusing. I don’t want to be seen to be whinging about mega savings, but at the end of that lot you have no idea whether you’re getting a steal or not.

Compared to a few other diet plans:

Diet

I know I’ve been a little unfair comparing Exante to pre-prepared meals (fresh; Balance Box and My Food; or otherwise Diet Chef) delivered to your door, but I wanted to highlight its only selling point; I’m aware that this is one of the only truly affordable diet plans on the market for the cash-strapped.

In summary, I couldn’t stick to this diet psychologically or physically. I have no doubt whatsoever this diet will work if stuck to, and I think if I’d have been truly motivated I might have lost a little more than 5lbs in the one week I ‘stuck’ to it. But my sanity is worth far more than dropping a dress size.
