#TravellingWithKids Roomy, Stylish and Great Value: Fun and Funky Caboodle Bag Review

With two kids we LOVE a roomy change bag. We’re not great at clearing them out so you can usually find the majority of the kids wardrobes stuffed in beside nappies, bum cream, wipes and enough bottles to keep an adult hydrated for a week. It’s almost like we’re envisaging an apocalypse every time we venture out the front door - Bear Grylls would be straddling somewhere between impressed and disdainful.

Our brand new Fun and Funky bag from Caboodle Bags certainly ticks the box in terms of space. It’s a super sensible 42cm x 33.5cm with a depth of 16.5cm giving it a life beyond carrying the kids essentials. It would make an ideal hospital bag if you’re due to drop, and we took ours as hand luggage on the plane to Lanzarote. With a nice metrosexual design it was perfect for daddy to sling over his shoulder in the airport - not a flower or a cupcake montage in sight, and the coordinating lime green zips give it an extra layer of interest for the style-conscious.

Yet there’s so many practicalities a good change bag should have. Pockets galore are essential for keeping food, drinks, medicines and ‘bum bits’ separate. We’ve all been there when your storage cup of breast-milk has drenched your nappy supply, or even worse, the cap escapes off your Metanium and coats the children’s jackets in yellow gunk. Well the Caboodle Fun and Funky design has a whooping five internal pockets. Each is really generous with all-important wipe proof lining to curb any cross-contamination and put an end to mishaps, and house any stowaway toys!

So that’s 5 pockets already before you consider the two outer pockets. If you haven’t discovered the advantages of side pockets yet, these will literally transform your outings. When Child 1 is running into newsagents and pinching Creme Eggs, and Child 2 is screaming from the pushchair, easy access to a bottle is essential for freeing up those hands and diffusing the situation. If you’re looking at a fancy change bag without these, don’t bother.

Change bags generally come rammed with extras too. The Caboodle bag is no exception with a coordinating changing mat, grubby stuff bag (fabulous if you’re faced with wet or poo-saturated clothing) and insulated bottle bag. These will set you back a good £25 if you buy them separately making its £40 price tag seem even more attractive.

Like Cath Kidston’s bags, our Caboodle Bag is made from oil cloth. If there is one thing I would recommend above all else when selecting a change bag, it’s this. Having a wipe clean material is just sooo essential. I have no idea why so many mums choose cloth when you think what a change bag will go through. It will be set down on the floor of public toilets, it will be set down on muddy grass, bottles will leak from the inside - It’s common sense to pick something that’ll survive parenthood.

Caboodle

Finally, like all good change bags, this one comes with a webbing handle for grabbing, and an adjustable shoulder strap for flinging over your pushchair… I know, I know we’re told not to hang things off buggy handles, but you’re going to do it anyway - Just be super aware you aren’t popping rocks in there or it’ll tip over your pushchair.

So do I love it? Yes. This is exactly what you want out of a change bag. Yes I have a super posh one for when I’m showing off, but for everyday, I can’t fault it. If you’re bucking the Pink Lining trend as you find it a little too twee (and expensive), this is the bag for you.

Pacapod Hastings Review - Finally… A Baby Change Bag for Him

Baby changing accessories are fast becoming the new-mums status symbol of choice. Gone are the days when the freebie Boots change bag from the Bounty Pack were readily snatched up. Once upon a time you couldn’t get your hands on these if a local baby boom was taking place, now there are dozens in store sat patiently waiting to be re-homed. It seems nowadays that mums-to-be are frantically hiding the little vouchers from their other half’s and insisting on a branded bag instead. There are some for literally every budget - from Mama Tui’s, to Pink Lining, to the jaw-droppingly gorgeous Nova Harley collection.

Our love for change bags seems to be mostly a consequence of aestheticism. We see something shiny hung over the handlebars of a fellow mums iCandy and simply have to have it. The result is that dads everywhere are having to slope off to the loos on a family day out with a baby on one arm, and a bright fuchsia bag (complete with frills and bows) on the other.

So when Pacapod got in touch to ask if I’d like to review a bag from their new unisex collection, I bit their hand off. Craig hasn’t minded Dexter’s Lara Gill change bag, but I’m sensing he isn’t quite so much looking forward to ‘bum duties’ in public with Mini Madam’s Nova Harley Manhattan (although I am!!!).

I requested the Pacapod Hastings and haven’t been disappointed. This bag works on so many levels I’m not quite sure where to start.

The Pacapod range was inspired by clothes designer and mum Jacqueline Waggett. What sets these bags apart from others on the market is their unique 3-in-1 baby organising system - making it a truly practical choice for parents. You have the obligatory ‘parent pocket’ for keys, phone and wallet, but the central component is reserved purely for baby. Inside every bag is two smaller bags (pods) - one for nappy changing, and another insulated bag for feeding gear. These slot neatly inside the main compartment and are brilliant for a number of reasons:

  1. It prevents you from cramming your change bag full of needless things
  2. You won’t have to fish around for the essentials as they’re all neatly squirreled away inside each pod
  3. You can simply take the relevant pod (and baby of course) into a changing room - rather than the entire bag
  4. The pods are detachable so can be transferred from bag to bag if you wish

From the front-view the Hastings bag resembles a retro satchel thanks to its leather buckle. It’s in a stylish pinstripe design which is very daddy-friendly yet still looks great for mum too. There’s a generous pocket on the front that has popper fastenings - this is the ‘parent pouch’ alluded to above. Inside are two elasticated pouches for further ‘sorting’ of your bits. I would have preferred this to be zipped to prevent pickpockets but this is personal preference only (it’s definitely Dexter-proof in any case!). 045

The main compartment is zipped and is positively tardis-like. A casual observer might wrongly dismiss the bag as being too small from its outer dimensions but there really is room enough in here to stow away all your essentials - including toys and a change of clothes - along with plenty of room for your pods.

The pods are (as mentioned above) genius. There are four elasticated pouches in the changer pod. One comfortably houses a padded changing mat, the others are labelled for wipes, sanitiser and nappies. Once zipped up, the pod shrinks to dinky proportions and has its own carry handle for quick changes.

The feeding pouch is fully thermo-insulated and plenty big enough for 3 bottles, or a bottle, some food and your babies weaning paraphernalia.

The best bit about the Hastings by far however is it’s versatility. Not only is there a top handle for easy hanging off a restaurant chair (or your coat hooks at home), there are also traditional rucksack-style straps which mean you can sling it over one, or both, shoulders (making it part messenger, part rucksack). Add to this the fabulous pram attachment clips and you can pop it on the back of your buggy regardless of whether your pushchair sports a single handlebar, or two. The top loading style also means all the essentials are easy to get to at all times.

Pacapod Hastings

As expected, Craig loves this change bag. The muted colours, size and ease of wearing makes it his bag of choice and he regularly takes it out when he’s having daddy-time with Dexter. It’s also plenty big enough for all his man-bits and will even take a laptop when it’s no longer needed for the children. For £60 it’s a bit of a bargain in my eyes. For a quality bag with so many uses beyond baby, it really is the perfect man-bag for the metro-sexual man.

As for me… I love it for quick trips to the shops and really like the way it hangs so comfortably over my buggy handles. It looks so far removed from a traditional change bag, that I’m often asked where Dexter’s nappies are! I will admit however that I’m still having a love affair with my Nova Harley Manhattan and this is as steamy and passionate as ever. Given we’re about to have two babies under two, this is the perfect compromise. My Manhattan will live on the handlebars, and the Pacapod will ride happily in the buggy basket. Win win.

The Baby Change Bag That Will Have Friends Seething with Jealousy

Posted on

Just before Christmas, I was feeling incredibly sorry for myself having been placed on bed rest by my consultant - somehow I’d contracted influenza in pregnancy. It wasn’t much fun at all. I was overwhelmed with Dexter’s childcare needs whilst resting up my increasingly stressed-out Bump, and I’m not known for my patience at the best of times. It really did put an enormous strain on Christmas and led to muted New Year celebrations to boot. Happy to report I’m doing much better now, but I was a whingey mare for a few weeks!

Whilst partaking in my daily moan on Twitter, Nova Harley spotted I was having a bad time and offered to send me something to cheer me up. I was beyond surprised when the postman turned up a few days later with the change bag I’ve been lusting after for months on end.

Despite trying to save this bag for the birth of my daughter, it’s had a few outings with me now. It’s just too beautiful to lock in a nursery!

Nova Harley Manhattan Baby Bag

As my stress-levels are soon to take a stratospheric leap with the addition of Mini Madam to the daily mix, I need a huge bag that suits either gender and that Craigy won’t mind dashing to the loos with when we’re eating out. I also wanted something classy that will take the edge off the fact my hair is unlikely to see straighteners in the mornings anymore, and I’m bound to set off from the house at some point with leaky boobs and no breast pads, wet wipes stuck to my bum, or my nursing top disheveled to the point of indecency!

Nova Harley’s Ultimate Baby Bag Collection promise to solve of all these problems for busy mums everywhere, whilst giving them something truly gorgeous to admire when everything else is going tits up around them.

Nova Harley Manhattan Back

Creator and designer, Nova Harley has put together a fabulous range of aesthetically pleasing luxurious bag designs that have been draped over numerous celebs and style-conscious mums. Nothing about any of them screams “I’m a mum!!!” and my friends are always amazed when they discover it’s not a regular designer handbag.

I plumped for the Manhattan bag in lemon. The bright, soft, yet incredibly durable leather and simple barrel bag design wouldn’t be out of place on a catwalk. I haven’t seen anything like it anywhere else and it invites comments from just about everyone who sees it. Dimension-wise it’s incredibly generous without being a danger to other pedestrians when slung over your shoulder. I’ve taken it to various press conferences now and managed to fit in all my bits (laptop, Canon, notebooks etc) PLUS all Dexter’s essentials.

Nova Harley Manhattan Straps

As regards versatility of wearing, you can detach all straps and carry as a handheld, pop on short straps for flinging over buggy handles, or a longer body strap for your shoulder. The fastenings for all straps are incredibly secure with studded presses and metal clips for peace of mind. There are leather feet on the underside of the bag to prevent any wear.

What’s more, with 13 picture-labelled pockets you’ll never forget the scented nappy bags ever again. These compartments come in various sizes and guises - some zipped, some velcro fasten, some leather trimmed… but all are wipe clean in case the Sudocrem lid liberates itself from the mother pot. With pockets for bibs, medicines and keys amongst other things, one quick check before leaving the house and you’re good to go. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve shut the front door behind me and discovered I’m locked out until Craig gets back from work. All too often Dexter and I have sat in the local pub sharing a Diet Coke bought courtesy of the emergency £1 coin from my coat pocket usually earmarked for the trolley at Tesco (my purse is unhelpfully sat on the kitchen worktop).

Nova Harley Manhattan Inner

As with most designer brands, The Nova Harley Manhattan also comes with a thermo insulated black bottle tote and a large waterproof black padded change mat. These fit beautifully in their corresponding pockets leaving plenty of room for everything else.

To say “It’s perfect” doesn’t quite seem to go far enough to describe how in love I am with my bag. It lives next to my bedside table at night and I won’t let Dexter anywhere near for fear of chocolatey fingers or toddler drool. It’s not going to be my hospital bag for this baby as I can’t stand the thought of it sat anywhere with a clinical smell or getting even the lightest of kicks by a Croc-clad midwife. It’s my baby and I love love love it.

Currently at £198, it’s not cheap. But quite frankly, who cares when you end up with something This stunning and pap-worthy.

I was not provided with this bag in exchange for my thoughts. It was an honest-to-God treat from the lovely Nova Harley. She was insistent I take the gift with the spirit in which it was intended, but I can’t resist showing off that it’s going to be stuck on my arm forever more when Mini Madam arrives. Thanks darling, it’s cheered me up no end and I simply love it.
