We were recently treated to a weekend away by Classic Cottages. Classic Cottages are a short break site that specialise in luxury cottages, apartments and holiday properties throughout the South and West. Every property listed must meet their exacting standards, and offer customers the ultimate holiday experience - whether that’s picturesque walks, bustling villages or seaside vistas. It’s a pretty big claim, so just how did they measure up?

We find holiday cottages that people fall in love with - it is as simple as that. Every time you walk into one of our holiday homes, whether it is a manor house or waterside apartment, we want you to say ‘Wow’, put your feet up and relax into your holiday Classic Cottages

The Classic Cottage experience

We had our hearts set on Cornwall & were in luck as Classic Cottages had over 500 beautiful cottages to choose from. Browsing and selecting properties was simple with plenty of high res photographs and clearly visible availability and pricing. You can filter by the things that matter; no of people in your party, dates, location, facilities and specific requirements such as whether pets are allowed or access to WiFi. Clicking through to a property, you’ll find a wealth of useful information including notes from the property manager, testimonials and information on nearby points of interest such as pubs, walks, beaches and towns.

After selecting our booking, the communication was swift and payment was simple. As well as email, you’ll receive a physical booking confirmation through the post - perfect for gifting to a loved one. There’s no spam email or faffing about, rather it’s straightforward from start to finish. You’ll even receive 5% off repeat bookings through the site.

You can tell that due care and attention has been put into the cottage descriptions as we quickly discovered that our chosen property lived up the site’s claims, even surpassing our expectations.

Welltown Barn, Warleggan, Cornwall - THE BARN

Wow. What a magical setting, and stunning place. The barn was beautifully presented (I was taking note of bits and pieces to buy when I got home as I fell so hard for the decor). The cottage totally surpassed expectation; it looked even better than the pictures on the website and the setting can only be appreciated in person. The accommodation was warm, cosy, yet spacious with a fully stocked kitchen and all the mod-cons you’d expect at home. From hot tub, to dishwasher, to plenty of white fluffy towels, you felt totally at ease from the second you put down your bags. Honestly didn’t want to leave. Us; Myself & Craig

I cannot speak highly enough of Welltown Barn. We arrived pretty late on the Friday (poor Dexter suffered some terrible travel sickness) yet were still warmly greeted early evening by the owners Stuart and Sharon. They led us to the front door and informed us there were homemade cream teas waiting for us in the kitchen. They weren’t fibbing! This, alongside a batch of freshly laid eggs really set the scene for what was to be a wonderfully relaxing short break full of thoughtful little touches.

The barn was beautiful. Think Laura Ashley simplicity with lots of reclaimed touches. The kitchen was traditional, lots of oak and gingham skirting, yet with all the mod-cons needed for self-catering. I was chuffed to find a SMEG fridge freezer, Belling oven, WiFi, flat screen T.V, microwave, coffee machine and oversized Belfast sink, as well drawers & baskets stuffed full of cleaning supplies, utensils, tea towels and even superfluous things like clingfilm and foil. Having everything we needed for our stay was much appreciated and saved us the 5 minutes journey to the nearest convenience to stock up for our stay.

The barn is spaced out over two floors, cut neatly into the hilly terrain. This meant you can access both floors through outside doors, making it easier for those with slightly impaired mobility (although I’d be reticent to call it disabled-friendly on account of steep access to the first floor). With a shower room, kitchen and lounge on the ground floor, and two roomy bedrooms on the first with a bathroom rammed full of period features. The owner’s have retained many of the barns original low sash windows, and beams making for truly cosy, yet surprisingly spacious accommodation that has you mentally totting up things to buy for your own home.

The beds were extremely comfortable, with no expense spared on luxurious bedding to sink into after a long day exploring Warleggan and the surrounding coast and towns. The children are notoriously hard to settle away from home, but both slept incredibly well at Welltown Barn, even asking to go to bed early with their tablets (I know, shocker). If there’s ever an indication that you’ll get a comfortable night’s stay somewhere, this is it - I really should rent my children out to guest houses to test their rooms.

Outside you were treated to panoramic views of the little seen eastside edge of Bodmin Moor. As well as plenty of seating areas, there’s decking to relax upon, with artfully weathered sun loungers and a chimnea for warming hands of an evening. In your private little country garden is a babbling pond, and a strategically placed hot tub enjoying uninterrupted views down a picturesque valley. This magical setting seems a world away from anyone when in reality just beyond your little gate is a quiet working farm with goats, chickens and horses.

Welltown Barn, Warleggan, Cornwall - THE AREA

The hamlet of Warleggan is twinned with Narnia and it’s easy to see why, with its smattering of homes, pretty St Bartholomew’s church and windy roads lined with woodland. The hamlet has its own spooky history too, and is said to be visited by the ghostly apparition of the churches former Reverend F. W Densham. A man much revered for his eccentricity, Densham arrived to take up incumbency of the church in 1931 and quickly alienated his parishioners with his autocratic preaching style. When the locals boycotted his services he would place cardboard cut outs on the pews on which he wrote the names of past vicars. His death in 1953 was as lonely as his life had been, having fallen down the stairs in the vicarage and lain dead for 2 days. His hand was said to be outstretched as though reaching for a bell rope to summon the assistance of his alienated parishioners.

As quiet and tranquil as Warleggan is, head back to the A30 through Bodmin Moor “proper” and you’re treated to all the colours and beauty of Bodmin Moor with roaming Highland Cows who make no effort to move for your vehicle! Far from being isolated you have Newquay, Padstow, Bodmin and St Neot all within easy reach. The London Inn (at St Neot) offering food, drink and roaring open fire is also a great little destination spot for walkers and cyclists, located around 2 miles from Welltown Barn. More on Warleggan and the surrounding area in a follow-up post.

So, as far as accommodation goes, you’d be hard pressed to find a more magical and picturesque setting, and a more beautiful barn to set up camp in. Ideal for families, and pet-friendly, I’ve already recommended Welltown Barn to plenty of friends looking to explore the area. The children simply did not want to leave, and we’ll be back in the Summer to explore more of what Cornwall has to offer.

If I’ve managed to persuade you to check out Welltown Barn, head on over to Classic Cottages and book yourself a stay, or elsewhere see what other luxury properties Classic Cottages has in Cornwall.

Britain’s Top “Happy Places”

Posted on

Our favourite 30 British places were revealed in a study with the Cotswolds topping the list

Reason 93 - Drinking - Pubs. The Porch House, Stow outside

Staycations are definitely on the increase. As parents continue to be exploited with outrageous out-of-term flight prices, more and more of us are sun-seeking closer to home. Fortunately, according to a new study revealing the UK’s top ‘happy places’, over two thirds said some of their fondest memories are of UK holidays.

Researchers from SACO, specialists in serviced apartments in London, polled some 1,500 Londoners and revealed one in four Brits believe there really is ‘no place like home’ when it comes to holidays.

With a pub lunch in the Cotswolds claiming the top spot. you won’t find me disagreeing with this survey anytime soon. Craig and I book a weekend away here every year for my birthday, with Stow-on-the-Wold being my ultimate favourite destination for antique shopping and Prosecco -swilling.

With cheap yet traditional activities such as paddling in the sea, hitting the arcades, and building sandcastles among our top things to do, a staycation needn’t break the bank either. Embracing the stereotype, it seems we’re also sentimental about rainy days and windswept beaches too. In fact, over half of those polled say they want to replicate these simple yet intrinsically British memories with their own children.

We’re also living up to our foodie reputation with fish and chips, cream teas, pasties and traditional pub lunches all cited as must-dos on your UK travels. Let’s face it, you haven’t had the true fish and chip experience until you’ve taken to the beach with wooden fork in hand!

With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that our most beloved “happy places” here in the UK are mostly dotted around our scenic coastline. But, I’m shocked to that Bath & Windsor didn’t make the cut. They’re right on our doorstep as Londoners, and perfect places to getaway from the stresses of working in the capital.

So enamoured are we with our picturesque country, two thirds of those surveyed boldly claimed if they could guarantee the weather, they would never go abroad again. Being able to travel by car at a time that suits you, and share the holiday with the family hound (thereby avoiding extortionate kennel fees), are cited as the top reasons, but also cost. With the average Brits spending a whopping two months pay on a holiday abroad, commandeering a farmhouse here in the UK for a week is just so much cheaper.

If all this is making you appreciate those home comforts, SACO serviced apartments allow people to live like a local in a home from home all over the UK. Craig and I have stayed in SACO apartments both professionally and for cheeky nights away from the kiddies and it’s true to say there’s nothing quite like kicking off your shoes in your own apartment after a long day pounding the streets. Whatever your accommodation, I hope the trend for the Great British staycation continues - there’s just too much beauty on our doorstep.

So where’s your happy place? Have you any others to add to the list above?

How in-car connectivity can make you a safer driver

Posted on

By this point you’ve either embraced the VOIP revolution or you’ve held it at arm’s length. There’s definitely something to be said for home-connected products with the Amazon Echo being the huge smart hit of 2017. In fact, tons of us are now regularly brain-dumping chores like online shopping & scheduling appointments into our smart speakers, or indeed bypassing Google and asking Siri instead.

So when Volkswagen revealed that it was combining the Alexa Voice Service with Car-Net functions earlier this year, there was plenty of excitement about how this would revolutionise the auto industry and move cars even further into the 21st century. However, not simply a fad for early tech adopters, this new technology can also help drivers become safer behind the wheel — a fact made even more poignant following a few significant changes in the UK road laws.

Here, VW dealership Vindis explores why this is the case:

What is Volkswagen Car-Net?

VW1

Car-Net involves everything that is related to the in-car internet connectivity within Volkswagen vehicles; whether that’s hi-tech maps to help you navigate unfamiliar streets, streamed music to keep drivers alert, or even innovative means of monitoring what’s going on between back seat passengers.

The main parts of Volkswagen Car-Net are as follows:

Guide & Inform

Just because you are behind the wheel, it doesn’t mean that you need to be disconnected from everything going on beyond your car. The Guide & Inform services of Volkswagen Car-Net works to keep you better informed with the stuff that matters to you whenever you’re driving. Compatible with the German manufacturer’s Discover Navigation infotainment system, features include:

  • News - Pre-select news feeds that interest you and then the latest stories are imported from the customer portal as the headlines break
  • Weather - Receive the latest weather updates for both your current location and your destination upon your expected time of arrival
  • Online traffic information - Keep informed about the current traffic situation, both on the road you’re on and those ahead
  • Fuel information - Select the ‘Fuel Info’ search function to locate all nearby filling stations, when they are open and how much the fuel prices are
  • Parking information - Let the ‘Parking Info’ feature inform you of all free parking spaces in your vicinity, as well as opening times and prices

vw2

Security & Service

Alongside the infotainment features listed above, Car-Net can also give you added peace of mind.

  • Emergency Call Service - In a serious incident your vehicle will automatically call for help where the driver may be unable to
  • Breakdown Call - One press of a button and Volkswagen will make a call for breakdown assistance to the Volkswagen Roadside Assistance service. No need to know where you are, or have phone reception
  • Vehicle Health Report - This presents you with any existing warning messages or service events before you even begin driving, avoiding unwanted surprises during a journey

How does Alexa Voice Service combine with Car-Net?

The Alexa Voice Service and Car-Net combination will benefit you in a similar way to home connected devices. If, whilst driving, you suddenly remember something that you need to do once you reach your destination, simply inform the system through the power of your voice. Perfect for those of us who never stop working, you can now schedule appointments and plan errands on-the-go, without the need to pull over and jot things down.

Car-Net mixed with Alexa Voice Service functions will even be able to be controlled away from your vehicle. For example, you can program a voice command such as “Alexa, ask Volkswagen the way to the nearest bakery” when you’re at home and then hear the message come through when you’re next behind the wheel.

Where does the safer driver aspect come into play?

Advancements in in-car connectivity couldn’t have come at a better time. Rightly so, in March 1st 2017, the Government doubled the penalty for getting caught using your mobile phone whilst driving to six points on your driving licence and a £200 fine (that includes whilst waiting in traffic or at traffic lights). In-car connectivity negates the need to pick up your phone, allowing you to focus on the road.

Far from being a toy reserved for the tech savvy, recent research into mobile usage whilst driving reveals the need for in-car connectivity is a very real one. For instance, a survey of over 1,000 motorists carried out by price comparison site MyCarNeedsA.com revealed that 20% admitted to making calls when driving, 6% checked social media and 2% texted. The stats from this research, reported on by FleetNews, also included the fact that a staggering 66% of drivers said they have texted when stuck in traffic.

Figures obtained by the Press Association and reported on by The Independent further highlight the problem. The stats reveal that close to 6,000 drivers have been caught illegally using their mobile phones in the four weeks since March 1st one motorist every seven minutes.

“Driving is a safety-critical activity that requires our full attention. Hands need to be on the wheel and eyes looking out of the windscreen, not down at the phone screen.” RAC Foundation’s director Steve Gooding

By continuing to advance in-car connectivity — especially with hands-free technology like Alexa Voice Service mixed with Volkswagen Car-Net — it stands to reason that greater in-car connectivity will produce more attentive drivers.
