End of your maternity leave? Back-to-work fashion from the high street

Posted on

When most of us have babies, all sense of style goes out the window. Constantly whipping your breasts out means tops get misshapen and baby vomit rules out anything that can’t be scrubbed with a wet sponge. Despite being the most hideous fashion fad of the 21st century, leggings just seem to make more sense than jeans when your little angel falls asleep on your lap after an hour of fussing. When you’re finally ready to take that first tip out with baby, packing your change bag and making your baby look adorable surpasses any good intentions as far as dressing yourself goes. Just as well, as those first bum changes in Starbucks can be quite the ordeal… you soon learn to never ever to wear white when out with a baby.

When you’re ready to go back to work, your suits and wool mix shift dresses have become moth-fodder and won’t make it past your hips in any case. It’s pretty disheartening and doesn’t do anything to allay any fears that your breasts might spontaneously leak mid-presentation. As if the prospect of leaving your baby for nine and half hours isn’t hard enough!

Well here are my top tips on how to transition from home to office and fake a pre-baby body when you’re sporting a few extra lbs:

First up, wear sensible heels

JonesShoesFrom left to right by row: Cecilia Court Shoes £89 / Carina Court Shoes Slingbacks (white) £99 / Charlotte Court Shoes (patent croc) now £44 / Calypso Court Shoes (patent) now £39 / Colette Court Shoes Slingbacks (navy) £99 /Bellingham Court Shoes (deep red) now £44 / Candy Court Shoes (patent) £89 / Gabor Charity Court Shoes £80 / Chiara Court Shoes Slingbacks (snake print) £99

It’s all about the shoes! Shoes can make or break an outfit, elongate your legs and make a statement - all in one hit. Chances are your footwear of choice during your mat leave has been pumps, sandals or even slippers. Sprinting up and down stairs to a hungry baby certainly isn’t conducive to heels. You might have been able to last a full work day and enjoy cocktails afterwards in a pair of stilettos before baby, but 9 months off and your feet are unlikely to thank you for it when you return to work.

Court shoes with low heels and generous widths are therefore perfect. I’m loving the SS16 collection from Jones Bootmaker with sharp points to streamline calves that are in dire need of a spinning class or two.

When only smart and sharp will do

KarenMillenLeft to right: Faux Leather Pencil Skirt £130 / Scalloped Mini Dress £145 / White wrap top £110

Step up Karen Millen. They’ve got some wonderful textures going on at the moment. Their loose fitting wrap shirt is just perfect for any body conscious new mummy, and sits just above the hip to offer a softer silhouette. 3/4 sleeves will also cover the arms, with a deep v at the front for added interest - let’s face it, our breasts have never looked better when we’re breastfeeding, right? Couple this with a 3/4 length leather skirt that skims those thighs and you’re good to go.

I’m also loving this two-tone vertical stripe dress, with full skirt and nipped-in waist. With a scalloped hem, if you have a great set of pins, do it.

Dress down Fridays

Left to right: H&M Jersey Jacket £24.99 / Zara Fabric Belt Blazer £49.99 / FCUK Samantha Crepe Oversized Shirt now £48

Jersey blazers with their extra bit of stretch will cover a multitude of sins. Pick a single-breasted jacket to pinch in underbust and create that elusive hourglass. Don’t feel you have to stick to bland colours either - Zara have some awesome colourways at the moment that will lift any trouser/shirt combination.

If shirts are your issue, go for a longer length free-flowing shirt. The androgynous look is bang on-trend at the moment as evidenced by French Connection’s SS16 collection.

Pretty little things

From left to right by row: Navy Sporty Dress £40 / Printed Chevron Dress £40 / Cobalt Flippy Long Sleeve Dress £50 / Black Textured Shift Dress £45 / Suit Jacket £40 / Black Lace Shirt Dress £45

Part of the thrill of returning to work, is ditching the trousers and setting your legs free - for me anyway. Next have tons of part-tailored and unstructured looks to complement all shapes and sizes at the moment. If paranoid about your breasts opt for a round neck with tapered waist so the fabric falls down flatteringly. If your tum concerns you, look for longer length pelmets that help draw you in at the breast and thigh. Shirt and shift dresses are easy to wear and come in a variety of fabrics to help conceal any lumps and bumps - the heavier the fabric the more forgiving it will be.

So there you have it! Back-to-work fashion from the high street that’ll help you with any post-baby body angst…

… Actually, screw everything I’ve just said. Your body is AMAZING and who cares if you’re sporting a few new jiggly bits. Just be comfortable and take as much time as you need to settle back in. If you can give birth you can survive a little back-to-work nerves. Knock em dead ladies.

Fitbit Sport Relief Campaign 2016 - #StepsforGood

FitbitSteps

Hot on the heels of Fitbit’s #StepsForGood Big Billion Step-a-thon which made a staggering £250,000 for Sport Relief in just 7 days earlier this month, they’re at it again with stage 2 of the campaign.

This week, the campaign has taken on the big guns and sees Tess Daly & Al Murray go head to head to out-step one another. YESSSSSSSS I’m all for this one. The “Beauty & the Beast” (sorry Al) are the stuff of fairytales after all and it so perfectly captures what we’re all secretly doing with our Fitbits - pacing around our living room trying to notch up those 10k steps and beat our mates.

Sportrelieff

It’s already proving to be a hilarious contest. Tess, as you can well imagine, continues to look absolutely gorgeous in her gym get-up, whereas poor Al is all arms and legs in his retro shorts. Just watch the below - I was just waiting for Al to fall through that trampoline, I mean, he barely fits on it!

SOMEHOW Al Murray is whipping Tess’ bum! Are we serious??? If this is seriously the case, let’s cheer on the nation’s sweetheart and do it for the women! Who is going to look sexier on that podium after all?

You can keep an eye on their progress, read more about the Steps For Good campaign, and find out how to support Tess & Al by visiting www.fitbitforsportrelief.com. Make sure you’re also publicly backing your favourite using the #StepsForGood hashtag via social media - they’re both keeping an eye on their tweets so get some healthy banter going by commenting on their sweat patches… here’s looking at you Murray.

The Daly vs Murray challenge, is the follow-up to The Big Billion which saw tens of thousands of those of us in the Fitbit community join forces to take over five billion steps, in less than a week, all as part of a fundraising drive contributing to an overall donation of £500,000.

I love it when big brands give back, and there’s no denying that Sport Relief is a worthy recipient. They’ve been involved in supporting some incredible projects - both here in the UK and in some of the world’s poorest communities. It’s humbling to think that, thanks to their hard work and the public’s sweat and tears, 734,000 children have been given life-saving vaccines and dementia and mental health charities here in the UK have had a much-needed boost.

Following #StepsForGood and donating just a single £1 equates to buying five hot and nutritious meals for homeless children in Bangladesh or a year’s supply of exercise books for children in Ghana - see? You can make a huge difference to people’s lives all over the world.

For more information on the campaign visit www.fitbitforsportrelief.com. The first part of the campaign, The Big Billion Step-a-thon, raised £250,000 in 7 days, so let’s push all we can for even more week 2.

FLASH GIVEAWAY: Win a Child’s Costume from Smiffys in time for World Book Day (CD: 28/02/2016)

So World Book Day is upon us. On Thursday 3rd March, most of us will be up at the crack of dawn getting our little ones dressed up in Roald Dahl-inspired costumes before the school run.

There are plenty of crafty mums out there that have the imagination and skills to create brilliantly extravagant costumes that children love to wear. Not so in my house. I’m very lucky to have been donated a costume this year or else Dexter would be wrapped head to toe in tin foil with holes purely to see and breathe. He wouldn’t know why of course, but I’d be telling everyone at the school gate that my walking chunk of metal is in fact the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz.

Yep, tens of thousands of us are just too busy to sit there sewing when the kids have gone to bed. I’m not ashamed whatsoever to say I buy all the kids costumes from retailers. Be that Halloween, World Book Day, or even just treats when the kids deserve it. The reality is that my two LOVE to dress up. In fact, the only times they’ll really attempt to dress themselves is when a costume is involved. Regularly I’ll nip to the loo, come back and find my wee man & baby girl have transformed into Spiderman and Batman.

Smiffys1Roald Dahl Fantastic Mr Fox Costume £17.99 / Crocodile Costume £13.99 / Roald Dahl Willy Wonka Costume £22.99 / Roald Dahl BFG Costume £24.99 / Robin Hood Costume £7.99 / Horrible Histories Sweep Costume £6.79

If you’re after a costume for World Book Day, Smiffys have some excellent options in a wide variety of sizes. I love their Roald Dahl and Where’s Wally? collections, yet there are also policemen, nurses and wild west costumes if you’re child has other characters in mind. Right now, Craig is reading (somewhat ambitiously) Treasure Island to Dexter, so a pirate would have been perfect!

Smiffys2Deluxe Prince Charming Costume with Hat & Mask £12.99 / Horrible Histories Georgian Girl Costume £6.79 / Pink Pirate Girl Costume £16.99 / Where’s Wally? Wenda Child’s Costume £23.99 / Star Fairy Costume £21.99 / Busby Guard Costume £9.99 / Deluxe Cowgirl Costume £9.99 / Deluxe Hatter Costume £12.99 / Candy Creator Costume £5.29

If you’re after a costume, Smiffys have them by the bucketload. As well as a fabulous array of kids costumes, you’ll also find adult skins and deluxe costumes for every occasion. Check them out at Smiffys.com or follow them on social media for regular competitions & dress-up inspiration.
