Just Chillin’ in His Wigwam

Posted on

True to my word, Christmas was a little subdued this year. Despite our very intentional planning and plotting for a low-key day, rather than enjoying the subsequent peace and quiet, it was surprisingly boring here at home on Christmas Day. I definitely won’t ever deliberately aim for a quiet Christmas again as it did feel incredibly lonely spending the day without the wider family around. Christmas just isn’t the same when you’re not surrounded by noisy children, on your second glass of wine by 11am, and you struggle to see the true colour of your carpet for all the glitter, discarded sellotape and biscuit crumbs by the time you drag your weary behind to bed.

To add to the miserable atmosphere, Dexter woke up grumpy, I spent half the day bent over the toilet (none-too-pleased to see my morning sickness had returned), and Craig was quickly reminded just how woeful Christmas television actually is. Craig and I didn’t buy for each other this year so it felt very strange not having anything to unwrap, and poor Dexter worked out pretty quickly that any unwrapping only revealed PJs, jeans and tees, and not any new toys to add to his ever-growing pile.

Wigwam

The single highlight was unveiling his wigwam play tent at 9am. Rather than handing him the box to unwrap, we set it up the night before in the living room for him to enjoy. Given you need a lot of room to set this bad boy up I’m still patting myself on the back for this one. Not only would this be a real struggle to achieve with a uncontrollably curious tot around, it was comedy gold watching Craig do it drunk!

Well it’s been an undeniable hit and I’m so so so grateful to the guys at Garden Games Ltd for sending it to us. They heard a panicking mummy’s distress-call on Twitter and came to the rescue with the one present that actually managed to cut through Dexter’s moodiness and reveal those adorable milk teeth we all know and love.

Wigwams and play tents are one of those enduring success stories that every mum & dad should have in their armory, and for under £55 on Amazon this particular one won’t break the bank either. Not only has it provided the perfect den for Dexter to flick through his favourite monthly read Practical Parenting (I prefer to not regard this as some kind of hint to us), it also hides all those pesky toys and books that are other wise so hard-to-home - I’ve often worried these will end up causing Mr OCD (aka Craig) to have a mental breakdown before he gets to witness the birth of his daughter.

It’s HUGE - standing 1.5 metres tall and spreads out up to 1.4 metres (depending on how you spread out the poles) meaning there’s plenty of room for a bean bag or big comfy cushion inside. We’ve also popped a few favourite board books inside so Dexter has plenty to keep him happy in his little hideaway. Its traditional Indian design makes it ideal for both mini madams and monsters, but also looks inoffensive in rooms with muted colour schemes. Not only this, but it also has a thick water-resistant calico cotton canvas meaning you can pop it out in the garden come the summer months.

It’s currently providing a lovely den in my living room but will eventually live in Dexter’s new bedroom giving him somewhere new to hide when mummy brandishes the scary change bag, or tries to strip him down for a bath!

Dexter absolutely loves it so I’d like to personally thank Garden Games from the bottom of my heart - you guys saved Christmas.

I was not asked to write this post, the wigwam was a gift - but I’m so chuffed to bits with it I simply had to share this.

Merry Christmas Dexter

Dear Dexter,

So much has happened this last year, I might have forgotten on one or two out of the last 365 days to tell you how much I love you, and how utterly proud I am to be your mummy. You are the most wonderful little man mummy & daddy could ever wish for, and so very handsome too.

Christmas 2012

On this Christmas Eve, it might not very festive here at home. There’s a smattering of Christmas lights but no tree. We’ve plenty of nibbles lined up for tomorrow, but no turkey. There are a few presents for you to open, but nothing extra special. It’s not because you haven’t been a good boy this year, it’s because we’ve all been under the weather this month. You’ve had a nasty bout of tonsillitis, and your little sister has been a bit of a monkey in mummy’s tummy. Mummy has been told to rest lots so that’s why we’ve both spent so much time cuddled up in bed over the last few weeks.

But although, this will be a quiet Christmas, I promise we’ll make up for it BIG time next year. We’ll get the biggest tree we can find, write lists to Father Christmas, and get ready to welcome him and his reindeer to our home. We’ll watch you carefully over the year and make sure we ask him (very very nicely) to get you lots of pressies we know you’ll love.

But these aren’t the things that make Christmas special.

Christmas is all about family and spending time with each other. It’s about appreciating how important we all are in this little family of ours, and being grateful that we will always have one another to make things better when times are hard. Mummy and daddy will make sure tomorrow is crammed full of cuddles, play-time and fun so you won’t miss out on this. On this front, tomorrow will be the most special day ever - even without reams of wrapping paper, a tree and traditional lunch that you’re not so keen on anyway.

Not everyone is as lucky as us. You have a mummy and a daddy, nans and grandads and tons of big cousins who love you very much. You’ll also experience what it’s like to be a big brother in April, and help mummy look after your little sister. It might feel like a big upheaval, and it might be annoying to have to share your mummy & daddy with someone else, but in years to come you’ll have lots of wonderful shared memories and experiences to smile about, and you’ll realise there’s yet another person in this world that would go to the ends of the earth for you.

As a little family of four, we’ll go on holiday together, celebrate you turning two (and mummy & daddy getting a little older), and another Christmas will be here before you know it. Daddy and I are excited we’ll get to watch you grow up into an even more caring and independent little boy, and know you will continue to make us proud for years to come.

I love you little man, so so so much.

Merry Christmas darling x

Mummy xxx

TalkTalk Sky Movies Boost

Talktalk_logo

So this month we’ve been trialling the TalkTalk Sky Movies Boost. I’m not new to Sky Movies as I’ve been a Sky customer before, but I was intrigued to see how easy the service is to navigate on TalkTalk’s YouView box.

Let’s get all the faff out of the way first…

This boost is just £15 per month, and as with all TalkTalk’s boosts, is available with just one month commitment – so no lengthy subscription charges. You’ll opt in using your TalkTalk remote and secure pin - so providing this 4 digit number isn’t public knowledge, there’s no chance of little fingers ordering any boosts on your behalf. The on-screen instructions are incredibly easy to follow and the fees are clearly explained to minimise any confusion. This means your selected Boost will be added immediately and you can start your month’s worth of Sky Movies anytime you like. The benefits of this system are obvious - you’re not tied to a costly year-long contract so you can dip in and out at your leisure. In this climate of financial instability, this is an outright win for TalkTalk over its competitors.

So what’s the Sky Movies Boost all about?

Well you get 11 channels of all the latest films covering all your favourite genres. These being:

  • Sky Movies Premiere
  • Sky Movies Showcase
  • Sky Movies | Disney
  • Sky Movies Family
  • Sky Movies Greats
  • Sky Movies Comedy
  • Sky Movies Select
  • Sky Movies Drama & Romance
  • Sky Movies Action & Adventure
  • Sky Movies Crime & Thriller
  • Sky Movies Sci-fi & Horror

You can access what’s on via the Guide button on your remote (channels 530+) to view the films on offer at set times throughout the day, or via the TalkTalk button to access a range of films on demand. Just select TalkTalk > Sky > and scroll left or right to what’s on offer. This is great for impromptu viewing and means you’re not restricted to a timetable.

In my eyes, this makes TalkTalk slightly easier to navigate than Sky. Although Sky’s Guide function is arguably better, the sheer number of ways to access On Demand programming is much better with TalkTalk. I also love the fact the graphics on the TalkTalk home screen only take up half the screen - the other half shows trailers of what is on offer either on Box Office or via the Boosts. This is a great idea if you’re stuck for viewing inspiration.

This review has gone down a storm with my Craig as he loves to relax with a movie and beer in the evenings. But it’s also brought the boys closer as they can watch children’s movies together at the weekends. Dexter is really beginning to take notice of the television now and it’s great to see him quietly snuggled up with his daddy rather than trashing the house! This leaves mummy with some much-needed hands-free time to do some bits around the house or nap (I am pregnant after all!).

Here are some of our favourite films on Sky Movies at the moment:

This is 40 is the second time Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann have played alongside each other as man & wife. I really loved Knocked Up and this was filled with the same dry humour that never fails to make me giggle. If you’ve had CBeebies on for 4 hours straight and want to remind yourself that you’re an adult, this is the perfect tonic.

Craig rated A Good Day to Die Hard and, judging by the noise traveling up the stairs thanks to surround sound, it had the right amount of guns and bombs in it to appeal to our nation’s men.

But Sky Movies is really about the kids this Christmas with a whole of family-friendly premieres (Oz The Great and the Powerful, Wreck it Ralph), and old favourites such as Miracle on 34th Street and Arthur Christmas. Cartoons are a big hit in our house at the moment and I managed to get the above shot of Craig and Dex enjoying The Elf That Rescued Christmas. The fact that he managed to sit still for the entire duration is enough to make this review one of TalkTalk’s finest yet. Thanks guys!

We’re TalkTalk ambassadors and this review is one of many about their range of services. If you’d like to see what we thought of the Kids Boost click here to read more!
