10 years of making windows sparkle - Kärcher Window Vac Review

Posted on

You know you’re getting old when you ask Santa for cleaning bits and bobs. Yet I genuinely did have this Kärcher Window Vac on my wish list this year. The team at Kärcher must have heard my thoughts as they kindly sent me an anniversary edition one in celebration of 10 years of making windows and doors sparkle. Okay, I might have begged a little.

Why did I want one? Simply put, it’s this:

I am totally fed up of streaky windows. I’ve tried numerous cleaners, white vinegar & lemon juice (to various dilutions), and buffed them to death. Yet whatever concoction I use, leaves streaks when the sun shines through them. Add in my two children who are forever putting their greasy and sticky mitts all over them, and I had all but given up getting them to look the way I wanted. Things like this bother me. A lot.

So what, I hear you ask, is a Kärcher Window Vac?

In short, it’s a must-have cleaning gadget for doors, windows, mirrors, shower screens, tiles and more, that leaves surfaces streak-free and as clear as crystal.

Buying from new, in your box you’ll get the following:

  • The Kärcher Window Vac
  • Charger cable
  • 2 different length blades
  • Spray bottle with machine washable microfibre cleaning pad attachment
  • An instruction manual

Yet other accessories are available; most notably a telescopic handle for cleaning your first floor windows, and a narrower blade for cleaning lattice windows and other smaller surfaces.

The evolution of the Window Vac has been rapid. The specifications for this particular model include 40% extra running time on its 2008 counterpart, 105m² cleaning area per charge, a quieter device & visible battery status. It’s main body is also black (as opposed to yellow) making it a little more aesthetically pleasing. You might think you’d pay extra for all the extra features, but you can pick up this one for just £50 from the Kärcher website (usually £99,99) - so priced ideally as a Christmas gift.

Window cleaning

As the Window Vac came into being primarily for use on windows, it’s best to start here.

The instructions are simple. First up you add cleaning solution to the pump action bottle. I used a standard window cleaner, but you could pop in an eco-friendly homemade solution if you wanted. The microfibre cloth head actually attaches to the spray bottle like so…

Spraying and gently cleaning with the microfibre cloth allows you to work up a little lather and cover a sizable surface area quickly and without any mess.

Then, simply get out your window vac and back go over the area. Work from top to bottom quickly in one fluid movement for best results.

The trick to this nifty little number is that the vac will powerfully suction up any dirt, cleaning product residue, and any condensation or water on your window - and store it in an in-built reservoir for safely emptying (no water on your hands! Genius!). There’s no need for additional buffing as the vacuum is so powerful, it lifts everything without leaving wipe marks or streaks.

I definitely found that I got better after a few tries. The same process can be repeated on car windows, mirrors, shower screens and more, all with the same fantastic results. If we consider general window and mirror cleaning, what used to take me some 20-30mins now takes between 5-10mins.

For everyday cleaning

Shower screens are regularly exposed to condensation. Most of us will use a cheap window squeegee to get rid of this to avoid unsightly water marks, but over time, they lose their shine and can become dull and cloudy.

The beauty of the Kärcher in this instance is that it removes suds, condensation and water far better than conventional kitchen roll and bathroom cleaner. One quick skirt around after your shower and your entire shower is beautifully clean and dry, and ready for guests.

If we consider its efficiency in this regard, you can find plenty of other uses for the Kärcher Window Vac. Kitchen floors and marble worktops literally gleam after a quick vac, and you can even take the excess water off the kid’s trampoline after a rainy spell. I literally have mine out 3 or 4 times a day, and would simply hate to be without it now. Far from being one of those things that sits under the kitchen sink, mine is forever out.

Why I like it.

  • Very lightweight, at just 0.7kg
  • After a full charge, you have more than enough to give your house a thorough clean
  • The spray bottle with microfibre cloth head is really clever and allows you to cover large surface areas easily
  • The microfibre cloth is machine washable
  • After charging, it’s completely portable, so you do not have to be close to the plug
  • Excellent for removing condensation and suds from shower screens making water marks a thing of the past
  • The reservoir is easy to empty away, and keeps cleaning product and water away from your hands.

Any negatives?.

  • It works far better on large glass areas than on little panelled windows, or those with intricate lead work.

In summary, for me, it’s well worth the £50 outlay (I would have probably paid the full RRP). I’m absolutely delighted with the product and have already had plenty of comments from curious neighbours when cleaning my windows. If you factor in the multiple uses in and around the home, it’s pretty much worth its weight in gold.

Our new life

Posted on

These past few months have been hectic to say the least. We’ve made some huge life decisions, some have worked out, others not so well. We uprooted the children and moved 25 miles away from their friends, their school and the wider family - taking my mum with us for a new life in Thatcham, Berkshire.

The motivation was simple. Mum was ill and needed looking after, and we couldn’t afford to buy a house on our own. Berkshire is one of the most expensive counties in the UK, and our little money pot needed a serious cash injection to get us onto the property ladder. Combining our resources seemed like a plan that would work for everyone.

Yet this move hasn’t been without its challenges.

Firstly we had to jump through several hoops to secure a solicitor to represent our interests, and mums. We were grilled by the police, and my mum was forced to undertake a dementia assessment. Clearly, we all passed our respective trials, but we lost several properties throughout the process, and went through unbelievable stress as a result. The kids saw us fall out, cry, and spend days in bed having exhausted ourselves. It was a tough ride and at times, none of us were sure it would happen. The kids spent months in perpetual limbo - not knowing if we were leaving their friends, or not.

When the news came that we could exchange, it was sudden. Nothing was packed, and we hadn’t secured a van, nor school places for the children at the other end. To top it all off the weather forecast was awful and we couldn’t tempt many family members to pitch in and help. To empty and merge two family houses into one, in one day, was hellish. The day of the move we didn’t sit down all day, and everyone was incredibly emotional, in fact, we had no energy to empty boxes at the other end for days.

But we’ve done it.

The kids are now happily settled at school, and mum is gradually settling into her new surroundings. And best of all, we finally have a family home to call our own.

Decorating has been eventful and there’s still tons to do (expect lots of posts on this over the next few months) - but rooms are slowly taking shape and becoming spaces we can proud of. We have grand plans here too, with a loft conversion, outside office/gym and a huge kitchen extension in the pipeline when finances permit. I doubt this will be our forever home, but it will be my mum’s so we’ve no plans to leave here anytime soon.

Caring for mum has been the hardest adjustment to make. She’s deteriorated so much since I last lived with her (admittedly this was some 20 year ago), and we doubt she can be left to her own devices for longer than a day. This will mean family vacations will require serious planning and will be few and far between for the foreseeable future. It’s tough but rewarding and we hope she can see how hard we’re trying to make this work for all of us. I know she’s struggled with the transition and it’s hard seeing her so sad in a new town without her friends around her.

It’s definitely time to relax now, and try and adjust to this new life. But I will still be posting, and sharing as much as I can.

Has it been worth it?

Definitely. But oh my days, I didn’t think it would be this tough!

The best online furniture catalogues

blackout

Having just bought our first ever home, I can officially say I’m loving kitting it out with furniture and housey bits. I’m forever scouring the likes of Wayfair, Achica and Groupon for unique little bits to make the new house more homely - try as I might to slow down my spending, I’m just too excited to stop!

When the time comes to buy new furniture for your home, catalogues have some great pieces and collections. If you budget is tight, and you have lots to buy, they’re often the best way to compare options and pricing before making big purchases. These are a few of the best sites to consider when you’re ready to invest in new furniture for your home.

The Range

If you’re super strapped for cash, you’d be hard pressed to find a cheaper selection. The site has a dedicated section for furniture, with sofas, loveseats, dining room sets, bedroom furniture, and more. The Range also do lots of budget collection-sets, so you can save on the price if you have an entire room to deck out - as opposed to shopping for only a couple of select pieces.

Next

Not just for denim and work outfits, Next also has a furniture and home goods catalogue. Next online is more than just a website, it’s a feast for the eyes, with lots of high res images and inspo shots. Whichever room you planning on revamping, Next caters for almost everything - from statement furniture to accessories like floorlamps, drapes, or colourful decorative bits to make your room pop. In my opinon, Next are also unrivalled for mid-priced outdoor furniture sets as well; So, if you have a patio or some decking, and want to enjoy the warm summer months, check them out before anyone else.

Laura Ashley

A little more to spend? If you’re plumping for a country-inspired, shaker or more traditional feel, Laura Ashley wins hands down. If you can’t afford to do a whole room in Laura Ashley, do check their mirrors and fabric pieces to complement an existing theme. It’s amazing what a gingham tablecloth can do for your dining room.

EX CATALOGUE FURNITURE CENTRE

If only I’d have discovered this place sooner, I’d have saved myself a few quid. The site showcases many modern pieces, high-value sets, and high-quality material finishes. If you are looking for luxury, or for lavish furniture, or if you simply like the modern twist on your furniture, this is the place to go online. See here for more catalogues from which you can purchase furniture on credit.

New furniture can really recreate a dated, or older looking home. If you are ready for that change, and want to find great sets, collections, and of course, great prices, there are many online catalogues which sell furniture in the UK. For homeowner who want to find great deals, selection, and the perfect set for their home and décor, it’s always best to shop around online for the best price.
