REVIEW: Bioglan SmartKids Multivitamin Range

I’m ashamed to admit that Dexter has a terrible diet. Heidi is happy to dive headfirst into the fruit bowl and doesn’t mind a little greenery on her dinner plate, but Dexter is a different story. If we want him to eat a banana he’ll insist on being rewarded with a cookie, and he’ll happily wage a hunger strike if so much as a single brussel sprout is served alongside his chicken nuggets. It’s a huge problem for us and one we’re actively seeking a miracle to solve.

Yet we’re forever being advised that our children need a vitamin-rich diet to help their growing bodies and developing brains, and not a week goes by when the British media hasn’t paraded some 16st 8 year old in front of the This Morning sofa as a way of inviting discussion about the forthcoming sugar tax. Yet for all the advice and nannying that goes on, it’s easier said than done when you can’t even get your child to swallow a piece of broccoli.

With this in mind, I was very excited to give the new Bioglan SmartKids multivitamin range a go. We know it’s not a solution for Dexter, but it will give us some peace of mind to know that something good is going in.

The Bioglan SmartKids multivitamin range

Packshot

Priced from just £9.99 and available in four innovative formats, including Chewable Burstlets and a delicious Chocolate Shake, the SmartKids range is especially designed for fussy eaters. Although I’m not entirely sure where I stand on tricking kids to eat sensibly, in our case I can see the benefit. These four new products are packed with highly nutritious fruit, vegetable and superfood ingredients, and enhanced with essential vitamins and minerals* - none of which I’d stand a realistic chance of getting into Dexter without a little help.

* It’s also well worth pointing out that most of the products are nut, soya, gluten and dairy free with no artificial flavours or colours - so safe for little people with allergies. See packs for more details.

The range

SmartKids Brain Formula

Brain

SmartKids Brain Formula, suitable for children aged 4+, is designed to support healthy brain function. Perfect for students both mini and not-so-mini, it’s rammed full of complex nutrients that’ll help support a child’s learning and memory.

It’s a citrus capsule that bursts in the mouth and delivers a “squirtilicious” burst of vitamin goodness. The supplement contains Omega-‐3 fish oil, which is especially high in DHA, the fatty acid best known for its role in brain health. The formula is further fortified with several B‐vitamins which contribute to normal nervous system function, and Iron which plays a vital role in oxygen transport to the brain and the rest of the body, as well as contributes to the normal cognitive development of children.

I tried one of these myself and gagged a little. You could literally taste the fish oil and the bitterness was overwhelming. I also thought the capsule was a little strange. It burst easily enough but the skin was much harder to break down. But this trial isn’t aimed at me, so I gave Dexter a capsule and pimped up the experience by framing it as a delicious after-dinner treat. Surprisingly, he chomped on it with a grimace but swallowed the skin without complaint. I guess that means it deserves a thumbs up but I can’t see this being an easy ride if he is given it daily.

SmartKids Fussy Eaters Multivitamin

Multvits

This is the real reason I accepted this trial. The SmartKids Fussy Eaters Multivitamin is aimed squarely at children like Dex who regularly throw a wobbly when asked to eat their greens. Although it cannot replace a healthy balanced diet full of fruit and vegetables, this supplement can help support a child’s daily nutritional requirements. It combines a wide spectrum of essential vitamins and minerals together with a high ORAC blend of fruit and veg.

This comes in a “fizzilicious” chewable tablet in a berrilicious blackcurrant and strawberry flavour. Like before, I went first and absolutely LOVED the flavour. It broke easily in my mouth and disappeared in a matter of seconds leaving a really pleasant aftertaste. Better still, Dexter loved this too. So much so, he immediately asked for another. Since then he’s been gratefully accepting his one-a-day. Success!

Have I noticed a difference? Well not really, and it would be silly of me to attribute any minor improvements in mood, energy or learning to a tablet - but I am overjoyed he’s taken to them - hell, even enjoying them! I won’t hesitate to buy more when this current batch runs out.

Bioglan SmartKids Happy Tummies

Yogurt

Bioglan SmartKids Happy Tummies is perhaps the most novel of the four. These “yog-a-licious” strawberry flavoured balls are old school bonbon-sized and yield easily under teeth. They’ll help boost your child’s live culture intake and provide their tummies with the good bacteria they need. Each yogurt ball contains 1 Billion good bacteria - Lactobacillius acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis - two well known and researched strains often found in yogurt.

Kids can enjoy up to three of these a day, and I must admit, I thought they were nice. I drink a probiotic yogurt drink every morning, and find it really helps with intermittent bouts of IBS. I would have so loved it if Dexter would have embraced this one and followed suit, but unfortunately he spat these out after a few tentative sucks.

Superfood Shake

DexterDrink

From another miss, to another hit, this chocolate flavoured Superfood Shake contains a super-nutritious blend of hidden fruit and veggies. With 9 greens, live bacteria for happy tummies and vitamin D to support healthy bones and the normal function of the immune system - this is the ultimate nutritious weapon for exasperated mums everywhere.

Perfect as a before and after school snack, or for busy kids on the go, and including no nasties like added sugar and artificial sweeteners and flavours, use it to prepare milkshakes or smoothies, or simply add to cereal or yogurt. Just adding 1.5 tbsp to any of your child’s favourites delivers a burst of goodness with them none the wiser.

When preparing this I was instantly struck by how much it smelled like Baileys. It tastes surprisingly similar to my chocolate whey protein shakes, turning milk a dull brown/green colour. I thought the colour might put Dex off, but he was eager to try it when we told him it was “just like McDonald’s”. It’s actually incredibly tasty, more on the dark chocolate side, rather than milk chocolate. In any case, Dex gobbles this up with gusto and, given this is a fraction of the price of many well known alternatives, we’ll definitely be buying it again.

A mixed bag

Although it might seem as though Dexter wasn’t impressed by some of the above, this is gigantic leap forward for my little man. The fact he’s now getting some greens into his system, with multivitamins to boot, Craig and I are happy to pay for him to have these month on month, even when his fussiness subsides… it will, right?

Space saving solutions for a full house

Posted on

Family homes can be packed to the rafters with people, belongings and furniture. Whether it’s right now or sometime soon, you’ll need to maximize space and reduce clutter eventually. Here are a handful ideas to do just this!

Storage-solutions-for-small-spaces---living-room

Use the top of your walls

We have many items that we want to keep but only use once a year or so. Books are a prime example of this. A fantastic alternative to bookshelves and cupboards is erecting floating shelves around the top perimeter of a wall. Make sure you don’t go so high you can’t fit a book standing up, you’ll save space nearer the ground for other things. These items can be things you use weekly or monthly or even daily. Top perimeter bookshelves also look great in a room.

Be savvier with your beds

Bunk Beds might spring to mind quickly when you think about saving space in kids bedrooms. But why stop at two beds? Triple bunk beds are a fantastic option too. If you have three kids, perfect. Then you’ll have lots more space in their bedroom for other pieces of furniture or toy boxes! Even if you only have two, you can turn the top level into a secret den! String up some curtains and fairy lights for them; just make sure you know the password to get in at dinner time! When it comes to your own bedroom, consider beds with storage underneath. In some beds, this storage comes via drawers. In others, you lift up the mattress to find space underneath. Having a headboard that doubles as a chest of drawers is another option.

Install a wall unit

Wall units are very handy because of how high up they go. In the front room, for example, you can use yours to store and display a number of items. You can use the central section to display your TV and any related equipment. Areas around the outside can be used for things like books, DVDs and speakers. You can also have dedicated sections for your kid’s belongings, like toys and electronics items. Wall units can look really big when they are standing alone in the shop, but once you get them home and fill them up, they won’t be so domineering.

Turn your stairs into drawers

Shoes, brollies and boots cluttering up your hallway? Turn your bottom step into a drawer. Canadian Home Workshop have written a guide to turning the whole flight into one huge drawer-fest!

Find a space for an office

Perhaps you want to start working from home, or need to work from home occasionally? Or maybe you’re sick of trying to send emails from the kitchen counter. If this is the case, and you don’t have a whole room for an office, make an alcove. Build upwards rather than outwards. This will help you keep all of your items together. Have your computer and laptop at eye-height, your printer at your feet and any documents and stationery on the shelves above you.

The all new Wilkinson Sword Intuition Ultra Moisture Razor

Posted on

Intuition

Women’s razors. I must admit, they’re not usually my thing. I’ve used Craig’s old Wilkinson Sword Hydro razor for years now. He’s now mastered the stubble-look (at my request) so he doesn’t use it anymore. I have used a Venus before but it didn’t really do it for me. I couldn’t understand why the blades were encased in plastic, and found this wasn’t suited to the natural curves of my legs.

Yet it’s not lost on me that the closer the shave, the less regularly I’ll have to do it - and as a busy mum time is not always on my side. In fact, I’m lucky if I can get 5 minutes to myself in the bath! No sooner have I dipped in a toe, than the kids are stripping off and hurdling the sides. A razor that can save me time and guarantee me a perfectly smooth leg would therefore make things ten times easier.

So when Wilkinson’s Sword recently sent me their new Intuition razor, I was naturally sceptical but intrigued by the premise - after all this is very different proposition to my trusty old Hydro.

What makes it different?

The Intuition Ultra Moisture is a dermatologically tested 3-in-1 razor, that lathers, shaves and moisturises the skin without the need for soap, shaving gel or body wash (just add water). Blade technology combined with a moisturising bar infused with shea butter also means legs are left feeling soft-to-touch with none of that dry rash sensation you sometimes get when shaving. I was particularly interested in this feature given my legs dry out really quickly and I spend a fortune on hydrating creams - especially when the sun is out.

What did I think?

Well, it certainly looks different. With its big chunky handle and lather and moisturising bar, it’s easily twice the size of Craig’s Wilkinson Sword razor. Despite this, it’s incredibly lightweight and I’m a big fan of the way it stands vertically in a cap. From a hygiene (rust) and longevity perspective this makes perfect sense to me, and it’s also less likely to fall into the water if you keep it at the side of the bath. The kit also comes with a holder which has one of those sucky things that sticks to the bathroom wall.

StandUp

In fact, there’s a lot I like about this razor. Although not the most revolutionary concept, the 4 ultra-thin blades with guard wires and pivotal head gently skim over my curves. This means you can easily get across knobbly knees and underarms with ease and with less risk of nicks and cuts. Its chunkiness and rubber grips also make it easy to keep hold of in the shower when your hands are slippy.

16

One quick dip in your bath water and it will successfully lubricate your legs or underarms while you shave, and leaves your skin feeling silky smooth and clean. It’s quite novel to shave without shower gel, and the bar itself smells gorgeous. I haven’t used soap in ages and did worry it might result in that squeaky cloying residue that makes me itch, but it was surprisingly gentle and nourishing.

Close

In terms of negatives, my only worry is how long the blade will last. As the soap wears down, the razor follows it so that the level of the soap and razor is always the same. Judging on how quickly it has worn down in 2 weeks, I’m doubtful it will last a full month. This did come as a bit of a shock as I can’t say I change the blades on Craig’s old razor that regularly.

At £6.45 from Boots, you get the razor ‘body’ with one clip-on blade already attached (packs of 3 blades are around the £7 mark although some packs have a money off coupon for new blades). This makes the razor slightly more expensive than similar women’s razors, and considerably more expensive than many men’s razors.

So is it worth it?

I have to say yes. Shaving-experience aside, it leaves my skin noticeably softer and smoother. In fact, a few times I’ve been in a rush and skipped my post-bath moisturise, and my legs have held up well. In fact there’s a money back guarantee if you’re not convinced, so no excuse not to treat yourself.
