We’ve not long been in our new home, and I’m already bored of the plain magnolia walls and our old furniture. We agreed long before the move that we’d wait to get an appreciation of the space and dimensions of the place before making any purchases but I’m getting impatient. I’m also far better positioned to make changes than Craig is as I’ve been parenting our mini terrorists within it for 6 long weeks! For instance, I know that Heidi likes to climb up onto the lounge windowsill and flash her nappy at the postman. Popping a sofa directly beneath said window will therefore grant her easy access to her favourite spot and she’ll spend all day gazing wistfully out the window like the children in the NSPCC adverts.
So whilst I’ve already begun scouring homeware sites for bits and creating wishlists on Polyvore, Craig remains noncommittal. For him, it’s a toss up between a modern look or a shabby chic one, whereas I’m pushing for an altogether more regal feel.
For me, it’s all about ornate chandeliers, vintage books and Laura Ashley cushions. I want to source an old writing bureau from eBay and restore it for my study and, as this is possibly the largest master bedroom we’ve had, I’m also using all my feminine wiles to convince Craig we need a chaise longue in there. In short, however ambitious it might be, I want to bring a hint of Buckingham Palace to my 3 bed terrace. If it’s good enough for Her Majesty, it’s most definitely good enough for me.
One thing that’s nonnegotiable however is my ‘adults only’ corner. This is no way near as kinky as it sounds. Basically, inspired by the posh couple on Gogglebox (my heroes) I want a mini bar, or at the very least a Queen Anne style drinks cabinet to stuff full of gin and cut glass. I’m far more likely to go all doe-eyed over the glassware at House of Fraser, than I am all the kitsch tins and painted wooden spoons that GBBO has spawned. Give me a Waterford decanter or Villeroy & Boch wine goblet and I’m instantly a world away from my toy-strewn lounge.
This is the distinctive English Baroque style that I have a feeling is set to see a big revival over the next few years. Why not get in there first before Homes & Gardens magazine run their glossy editorials?
