Buff headwear from Kit Shack: UV Junior Cap Buff

Posted on

I’m so excited about this review. Simple as it might be, this has been one of the best sunhats I’ve reviewed on this blog, and the only one that Dexter is dare-I-say-it excited to wear. You see, the thing with Dex is he hates clothes in general. The only thing he’s enjoyed about potty training is the fact I’ve let him run around the house in the nudey. The need to pee in the potty is lost on him, but the novelty of having no nappy on is proving a hit.

Spider-Man is Dexter’s greatest love. He’s forever attempting to fire his web at passersby (“tsch’ing” his wrists), and won’t leave the house without his best mate in tow. His school bag is Spider-Man, his PJs are Spider-Man and he’d have the films on the entire day if it wasn’t for Mummy and Heidi interrupting his viewing schedule. Spider-Man clothing is therefore the only thing preferable to nakedness for my little dude.

This Buff Spider-Man Junior UV Cap Buff is therefore perfect for him.

It’s reversible so you get two looks for the price of one, and a hat that is fully adjustable and really grows with your child. As the back features an elasticated drawstring and the material has tons of stretch, it will last as long as his Spider-Man obsession does. I’m not kidding either, the website states it’ll fit children between 4-8, but Dex is just 3.5 years and it also fits me at 30-something! It will stay looking perfect too as the material is fade resistant and colour fast.

Okay, it’s not cheap at £20, but sit tight and I’ll tell you why it is worth every penny.

As this is a 3 panel cap with neoprene flexible peak, there’s no potential for creases or it becoming misshapen sitting at the bottom of your child’s rucksack. It also takes up no room whatsoever owing to it’s lightweight fabric. In fact, there are no annoying seams at all to dig into his head whilst he’s playing. The best way for me to describe the material is that it’s like a thick swimsuit - stretchy, soft and flexible. It’s possibly the closest you can get to not having a hat on at all comfort-wise, and I honestly believe he forgets he’s wearing it.

The peak is deep enough and completely UV resistant to provide the ultimate protection for face and eyes. I also like the way it sits on his head - almost embracing and hugging it. This means he’s can run, roll and jump about without it falling off - I can’t count the number of hats we’ve lost on boating lakes, at adventure playgrounds, playgroup etc.

But Buff isn’t just about great fitting hats & accessories, there’s a shed load of science behind the brand. Loved by outdoor enthusiasts of all ages, Buff are technical fabric innovators. Dexter’s cap (as with many adult Buffs) is made from 100% Coolmax Extreme, renowned for superb wicking performance and moisture management. Given Dexie is still a toddler, his body isn’t able to fully self regulate in extreme heat yet. Instead his body kicks into overdrive and sweat will pour off his head. The fabric of his sunhat is so designed to transfer moisture away from his head, block radiation from the sun all whilst allowing for air circulation.

Yet whilst this is breathable and water resistant in the summer, it will also provide warmth and protect from wind and rain in cooler months. It’s these properties that have seen Buff headwear become quite the hit with athletes. Their original Buff is simply a band of material that is truly multi-functional - it can be worn in any one of 13 ways including a neckerchief, headband, wristband, hair-band and bandana.

With an AW15 collection that has seen them branch into snood-like knits and beanies perfect for hiking, dog walking and more extreme pursuits, Buff truly are the ultimate headgear brand for all year round. There’s even a Buff for your dog - how about that?

A family picnic with Huggies Style on the Go

Posted on

So this weekend’s heatwave saw us donning a zillion bags and trekking to our local park for a feast of a picnic!

Picnics are usually hit and miss with us. Ants, wasps and unpredictable kiddies can make for a messy and stressful experience when you have OCD. So we took Uncle Dan (my brother) along for the ride to help out with bums, mitts and faces (and play time) so I could focus on swatting any intruders away. The kids had an awesome time - even if us adults ended up taking to the bottle afterwards!

So off we went. Car loaded up to the hilt, to Waitrose, then onto Dinton Pastures. It’s a rambling public park with boating lake, adventure playground and fields to explore. I set up as the kids rolled their sun-lotioned & sweaty bodies around in a nearby sandpit (did I mention I had OCD?).

When the food was ready, they came running at me like Calais migrants, knocking glasses of Appletiser, and depositing half the sandpit onto my carefully laid plates of food. Not to be defeated, I whipped out my new HUGGIES Style on the Go pouch, and did my best to restore some order and not flounce off in a mood. With dress slipping from my shoulder, broken breadsticks everywhere and strawberry juice dripping from dinky chins - I did well to keep smiling.

That’s the trouble with picnics. There’s something almost primitive about eating on the floor with your hands, and it makes for a messy experience. With no trusty Dettol spray or kitchen roll to hand, baby wipes are possibly the most essential bit of kit you need for family al fresco dining. This is where HUGGIES Style on the Go pouches come into their own. They have a clip allowing you to hang them from pushchair or bag so there’s no frantic scrambling around in the depths of your bag with icky hands.

Even better, practical doesn’t mean ugly, as these handy pouches come in three gorgeous and vibrant designs. This makes them even easier to locate around the house and serves as a neat little reminder to clip them on before venturing outside. If you needed any more convincing, they’re also endorsed by presenter, designer and style icon Fearne Cotton.

Like all HUGGIES wipes, the refills are made with natural absorbent fibres for baby-sensitive skin, and are free from perfume, alcohol, parabens and phenoxyethanol. These invisible chemicals can leave sticky residue on bums and faces and result in itchy unsightly rashes. Scarily most wipes on the market are packed full of these (used as preservatives), but not HUGGIES. They’re also the strongest and most absorbent of any wipes I’ve come across - so fab for mopping up spills or scrubbing away at sticky mouths and noses.

For older children with more manners and decorum than my two dirt-magnets, the flip-top lids provide easy access for little hands. The lids also mean mum & dad can grab a single wipe without emptying the packet - let’s face it, we’ve all been there; child pinned to the floor with legs akimbo threatening to make a run for it, desperately trying to liberate the one wipe from its cousins for a mucky bum change.

Needless to say my Style on the Go was never more than a foot away this mummy throughout the entire picnic, and I won’t be leaving the house without them again.

TabletTV Portable Tuner Review

Posted on

Watch and record digital broadcast network and local channels anytime, anywhere on your tablet. No cable. No Internet. And no monthly fees! Welcome to TabletTV.

Hell yes!

We seem to be tech mad in this house with no fewer than 3 TVs that Craig seems to be constantly upgrading, selling, then upgrading again. The kids obviously don’t have TVs, nor access to one unsupervised, but Dex does have his own Google Nexus that we use for car journeys, and as the occasional treat at home. On this he has NOW TV, Netflix and Flixster apps so he can stream kids movies, or those we’ve downloaded for him. Annoyingly however, he mostly plumps for toy unboxing vids (in Russian, Chinese and more) on YouTube.

What is TabletTV?

Put simply, it’s a portable tuner around the size of an old school mobile battery, with an RRP of £69.99 (get it on Amazon for less than half that at £34.99) that allows you to watch and record hundreds of free-to-air TV channels on your tablet without a monthly subscription.

Sounds great. This would allow us to deplete the apps from his tablet, and simply unlock live TV. As you can also record Freeview TV programmes, we could create a library of his favourites and restrict him to the programmes we know and trust.

Moreover, as TabletTV uses its own built-in Wi-Fi to connect to your tablet via an app and doesn’t need internet access to work, it sounded great for in-car use. We could even take him offline altogether, ensuring he isn’t running up 3G bills or left free to browse on YouTube… or access sites his daddy might have left open the evening before.

On the face of it, it promises so much, but would TabletTV really deliver…?

Set-up

You simply get it out of the box and stick it on USB charge on your laptop. Whilst charging, you can get ahead by downloading the TabletTV app onto the device you want to pair it with. Not wanting a lawsuit on their hands, TabletTV will ask you to confirm you have a TV license, then you’ll be granted access to the start-up wizard.

When your tuner is fully charged, switch it on, extend the antenna and place it up high near a window for best results. A step by step guide will then take you through the intricacies, then the app will search for all free TV and radio stations in your region. In my case, some 93 channels.

Watching TV

First up, like any external aerial, there’s a fair bit of fiddling to get the best signal (on this note, its glossy shell makes it tricky to prop up whilst away from home - an integrated stand would have helped), but when conditions are ripe, the picture quality is as crisp as your TV.

Operationally, it’s pretty self-explanatory; the tuner has LEDs on the front to indicate it is switched on, its battery life and connectivity status, and the app’s interface is similar to that of Freeview with a TV guide grid displaying now & next. It’s also quick and easy to access different features of the app.

During set-up, as guided by the wizard, TabletTV will disconnect you from your own Wi-Fi connection so it can pair itself with your tablet. Don’t worry though, TabletTV have enabled the option to reconnect to your own Wi-Fi from within the TabletTV app - allowing you access to in-app features such as full tv guide and social media sharing.

Recording live TV & watching it back

Not so impressive.

It’s biggest limitation, and one you’d hope to see addressed in future gens, is that there is no series link capability. In fact, you have to manually set each programme to record as and when it’s playing. This mars its functionality somewhat as you might as well just watch the programme there and then. Failing that, you’d have to set yourself a timer then setup both tuner and tablet to record your programme when it begins - not ideal if you’re busy out and about.

Due to the fact that you’re broadcasting to the same device you’re recording to, you’re also unable to watch another channel whilst recording something (somewhat obvious, but still worth pointing out).

Irritatingly, you also need the tuner to be charged and on in order to playback recorded programmes. I had assumed these would be available offline on the app and found this mildly annoying.

Finally, it would take the product into Ivy League if you had the option to rewind and fast forward recordings and avoid adverts.

Final thoughts?

I love the concept. If the conditions are right and the signal strong, you’ll get all the big networks (including sister channels such as +1s). The video feed is crisp and HD quality, and once locked, remains so whilst on the move.

It plays neatly into the trend of Freeview which has been increasingly on the up as the cost of paid subscription services continue to soar. In fact, as we become truly mobile consumers, some viewers have gone so far as to swerve a TV license altogether, abandon live TV and head for the likes of Netflix & YouTube. For me, this acts as a neat middle ground, slotting into the lives of the mobile generation.

There’s still some way to go before this product becomes the must-have portable accessory for your mobile device. The recording function needs some major tweaking to be useful at all, and there are some minor design elements that have been criticised by the press. But for watching live tv, as a first draft, at under £40 on Amazon, it ain’t half bad.
