GIVEAWAY & REVIEW: A Beautiful Pair of Guavamitts by Guavakids (CD 14/06/2013)

When I was pregnant with Dexter I was beyond organised - friends with babies had sent me lists of things I’d need and I’d been busy hunting them down. By the time he was born, his little nursery was decked out with all the essentials, but also bulging with contraptions and fad products I’d seen reviewed on blogs and baby websites.

One thing we couldn’t live without, but couldn’t live with, was scratch mitts. We had dozens of pairs but none of them would actually stay on his hands. Like lots of babies out there, Dexter would often wake up with cuts all over his face where he’d decided to try to peel his cheeks off. I guess babies are so intrigued by their seemingly mountainous faces that they can’t resist seeing if bits of it will come off if they give it a good tug.

When Guavakids recently contacted me and asked if I’d like to review their flagship product Guavamitts - I couldn’t resist giving it a go. They claim to be the world’s first smart, stay-on baby mittens - I just had to see if they were all they were cracked up to be.

The first thing that struck me when my dinky little samples arrived, was just how soft they are. They’re made from a bamboo/organic cotton blend and you could instantly appreciate how kind they would be to babies skin. Furthermore, bamboo is entirely breathable - keeping cool when it’s warm, and warm when it’s cool. On a more practical level it also blocks 99.97% of both UV-A and UV-B rays and has a UPF 50+ rating. As if this wasn’t enough it also has antimicrobial properties and kills up to 70% of any bacteria attempting to incubate on the fabric - a major cause of skin rash.

This attention to detail is echoed throughout the entire enterprise. The website is fun and conversational, the mitts look pretty and funky, and they have a two-part enclosure system that really works. With elastic on the back, and velcro on the front, they can be gently tightened around the wrist to prevent them being flung out of the moses basket or lost forever under the sofa.

Most impressively, they’re also reversible to hold babies attention whilst they’re busy flexing little fingers. The design on the front of the mitt is accompanied by a high contrast black and white design on the reverse. Black and white graphics are considered great for tiny babies as they stimulate baby’s eyesight and aid early brain development. Since newborns can only focus 8-10 inches from their face, this is such a clever little feature that makes these mitts even more brilliant. The very fact you can flip the design over (effectively doubling back over babies fingers) actually means they even more likely to stay put. Genius.

Unsurprisingly, what started out as a small venture between two mums Lili and Linsey in Portland, OR. has now grown and Guavamitts are sold in 350 (mostly in N. America) and are now available in 12 different countries. Luckily for us here in the UK, they’re available to buy on Amazon!

So how much are they? You’ll be surprised to learn they’re just £8.00 per pair. You can get yours from guavakids.com (low flat rate shipping on UK orders) or amazon.co.uk and a growing list of uk retailers (check out the website for latest store locator information). You can read more about these impressive mittens here, like them on Facebook here, and follow them on Twitter here.

  1. Great mitts and a gem of a find,i used the pull on stretch bandage type mitt. My son has excema that comes out on his face and i found the mitts i used frayed .
It was a losing battle because he then chewed on them and could have choked if i left them on.
