REVIEW: Hippychick Shell All-in-One Kids Waterproof Suit

Dexter’s nursery hold an outside session every Monday where they’ll sit around a bonfire telling stories, playing games and toasting marshmallows. Everyone I tell about this says something to the effect of “how nice”, but I’m not so keen. They’ll go out whatever the weather (rain included) and Dexter comes home stinking of black smoke, covered in mud and with a face full of snot. Apparently, they’ll be inviting parents to participate in a lesson next month but I think I might be ill that day.

We received a list of “suggested kit” before we enrolled him and bought a pair of two-piece waterproofs without too much thought. On that first Monday we quickly realised that more experienced parents had opted for all-in-one suits. So now, on Monday afternoon Dexter will literally have to strip on the doorstep outside and be carried straight to a bubble bath, whereas his pal’s ankles, tummies and heads stay mud-free and dry.

When I spotted that one of my favourite children’s companies, Hippychick have their own waterproof range, I got in touch to arrange a review.

Who are Hippychick?

Hippychick are real innovators in the children’s accessories world. They stock all the things you didn’t know you needed until you have them - genius products that make everyday activities with your child that much easier. We’ve bought numerous things from them, including their buggy lights which have proved essential given we live in a poorly lit village. I’m also eying up their dream tubes for Heidi who is soon to transition to her first ever big girl bed.

So what about these waterproofs then?

Simply put, I’m massively impressed. We ordered size 3-4 years for Dexter and it’s very generous size-wise (he is on the small side, but it will easily accommodate a taller heavier 4 year old). There are Velcro adjustments at the ankle, wrists, hips and on the hood to ensure a snug fit and ensure rain stays out. It also secures snugly at the neck with a little hood to stop the tip of the zip coming in to contact with Dexter’s chin, with a fabric zip-pull so he can get dressed himself.

The pockets are another neat feature as it means we he can stash a wad of tissues in there when his nose runs. They’re also nice and deep so can take a Fruit Shoot and packet of crisps too (… or even a toy Spider-man - the two are surgically attached after-all..). These are secured with some heavy duty Velcro, so no fiddly zips should he need to access them.

The Hippychick Shell All-in-One Kids Waterproof Suit is their lighter weight suit. That’s to say it’s perfect for spring and autumn when the weather is reasonably warm yet unpredictable. In reality, this means they’re likely to get muddy quickly as grass is likely to be slick underfoot. Yet unlike other waterproofs, not only is the Hippychick wipe-clean, it can also be popped in the washing machine to cleanse away stubborn dirt.

Style-wise, I love the contrasting trims and Dexter looks really comfortable in it. We recently took him on a walk in the woods were the weather turned on us quite unexpectedly - thanks Storm Katie. Whereas I ended up with make-up all over my face and with my hair in knots, Dexter was just fine. Made from Teflon coated nylon and designed to be completely windproof and breathable, he was unfazed by the cooler temperature and harsh winds, and he wasn’t sweaty under his suit either.

This suit weighs in at £28.50 which is incredibly reasonable given the quality (having quickly polled other mums on the nursery run, they paid between £20-£35 for Regatta suits on Amazon). I also see this lasting well beyond the age on the label owing to all minor Velcro adjustments. Better still, Dexter doesn’t moan about getting into it as it plays to his love of dressing up. Overall, I’m chuffed to bits with it and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

Super Cute Reins for a Super Cute Baby

People are always commenting on Heidi’s walking. She was up and about from 7 months, and being on the dinky side, it did look a little strange to see her running and climbing. At 15 months she can now manage extended time on her feet and, although I insist upon it, it’s a struggle to get her in a pushchair at all - she just wants to be like her big brother.

Heidi Feet

It was the same with Dex. As soon as he was capable (before 2 years) he was walking short distances holding my hand. By the time of his second birthday, we’d popped his pushchair into storage and he made any trip mummy did on foot. It might have taken us close to an hour to buy milk (the shop is ten minutes away), but it was worth it to give him a little independence and get some road-safety basics nailed.

So now, when we get to Tesco, I let Heidi walk freely whilst we do the shop. If I’m taking the kids to the park at the end of the street, she’ll walk along beside us. It’s somehow earned me a reputation as a “pushy mum”, and some of my neighbours disagree with me, but it works for us and Heidi is going to bed thoroughly tired-out due to the exercise.

We’ve plumped for the Goldbug Harness Buddy Toddler Reins / Backpack from Baby Thingz. I wanted something super soft & padded across her back, so these are ideal. The straps are fully adjustable and fit snugly against her miniature shoulder blades fastening with a safety clip at the front. Recommended for 18mths and up, Heidi is obviously a few months short of the average toddler, but they fit perfectly with plenty of room for growth.

I’m also pleased with the 3-foot tail so Heidi has plenty of freedom to explore. I only use reins for road-walking, or when there are gardens and the like to distract her whilst out and about. The idea isn’t to limit her, or restrict her, and I didn’t want to feel like I was taking a dog for a walk! If I need a bit more control for dangerous areas, I simply furl some of the excess tail around my wrist to pull her a little closer to me.

As soon as she’s able to listen to instructions better, she’ll have no need for reins at all. We’ll move to hand-holding, buggy-boarding or balance-biking - but for now this is far safer than leaving her to her own devices.

Buying reins is obviously a bit hit and miss for parents. They might all look similar, but there are reins with integrated backpacks, loops for parents to get better grip, five point harnesses etc. Heidi’s reins might look fun and less formal than Lindam’s or Cippasafe’s offerings, but they have robust safety buckles and conform to the required safety standard here in the UK. In fact, we’ve tried her on a set of more traditional reins and she much prefers these. I think it’s a case of what works for you as a parent, and of course, your baby - who might not get on with them at all - read about Dexter’s experience here.

My only minor criticism of the Goldbug reins, is that, if you were to use this as a backpack rather than reins, you wouldn’t fit a lot in it! You’d struggle to get a water bottle and a toy in there for example. Yet backpack aside, I’m pretty happy with these and feel much happier knowing she’s safe.

Baby

Heidi has a giraffe, but there are plenty of other cool designs available, including a dog, lion and pony with each priced at a reasonable £16.99. Head on over to Baby Thingz to bag one for your child.

Baby sun safety at-a-glance from Little Chickie Boutique

As a skin-obsessed mama, there’s precious little I don’t know about protecting babies skin. We’re a proud porcelain family with skin that blemishes and burns very easily, so having lived a life with no sunbeds or chemical tans, and a strong appreciation for organic skincare, my kiddies are very likely to follow in my footsteps.

This doesn’t mean we go into hiding when the sun comes out - the kids love the outdoors and would probably drive me to alcohol if they didn’t see daylight every 12 hours - we just have to run through a mental checklist every time we venture outside in the height of summer. From sunhats, to sunscreen, to bottles of Evian, we have all the bases covered so the kids can keep up with their buddies in the sun, whether they’re splashing in the paddling pool, playing kiss chase or going to war with NERF guns.

Handily, for new parents, grandparents or those experiencing this fierce Great British summer for the first time, my friends at Little Chickie Boutique have popped together this at-a-glance baby sun safety infographic to help the tiniest members of your family stay cool and hydrated in the heat.

For those who are yet to discover Little Chickie Boutique, they’re an an independent baby boutique stocking handpicked baby and childrenswear from across the globe. Packed full of quality and ethical brands such as Olive & Moss, Little Green Radicals, and Panda & the Sparrow, the collection is unique, fun and guaranteed to help your little dude or madam stand out from the crowd. It’s one of my favourite online boutiques to hunt down outfits that pop, and with up to 50% off their summer shop at the moment, you’re sure to find bright and airy outfits perfect for the heatwave.
