GIVEAWAY: Win 1 of 2 solid silver spoons worth £130 (CD: 31/05/2015)

Every baby is born with a silver spoon

Fortunately, not literally - it would make for a particularly painful birth!

Jokes aside, the arrival of Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge has sparked debate about exactly that. She looks forward to a life of wealth of privilege, but at what cost? Being born with a “silver spoon” suggests an easy life but of course life isn’t so simple. Would any of us ever trade a life of freedom for one of public appearances, wide angle lenses and unrelenting scrutiny? Would we really want a camera crew camped outside the hospital as we give birth?

Sudocrem Care & Protect asked parents to consider the advantages and disadvantages of being born with a “silver spoon”. The results were fascinating. For most parents, the greatest privilege wouldn’t be fame and fortune but the chance to use their power and influence to make a difference to others. The biggest disadvantage is lack of privacy and spontaneity. Would they change places? The answer is no. Perhaps unsuprisingly, it seems that an ordinary life has a lot going for it and the greatest gift of all (the silver spoon) is to be born into a caring and protective family.

In 2013 Sudocrem launched Care and Protect, the latest addition to the Sudocrem nappy range and celebrated the birth of HRH Prince George by commissioning Theo Fennell to create a bracelet in 18ct gold with the iconic Sudocrem pot as a tiny charm. The bracelet was auctioned for EACH (East Anglian Children’s Hospice) and raised thousands of pounds for one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s favourite charities.

“The bracelet was a unique way of celebrating the birth of Prince George and we wanted to do the same again; create something special and memorable. Not every baby is born with a silver spoon but every baby is special and it’s our way of saying that” Nick Lang, Senior Brand Manager for Sudocrem

Spot on Nick. I must admit that I missed most of the media hype surrounding Kate and Will’s latest pregnancy - this despite being a parent blogger and receiving some 50 press releases a day. My hope is that this is a sign of things to come and the press will let the princess grow up without the scrutiny afforded her parents.

We should never forget that every baby that emerges blinking into this world is an innocent, as yet untainted by the world. Each has the capacity to invent, inspire and influence - even the little terror that’s currently raiding my make-up bag!

The New Soother Range from Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature

I’m sure it can’t have escaped anyone’s notice that I was at The Baby Show last weekend. I spent most of it on my bottom in stands pretending to take arty photos so I could rest up my poorly swollen feet. I met tons of new brands, and managed to swing by heaps of my favourite brands too - more on this in an upcoming round-up post.

One thing I did miss however, was the launch event for the new soother range from Tommee Tippee. As a Tommee Tippee Ambassador this was a major blow for us, but I did manage to corner a sales rep at the show for a quick chat and it turns out there was a shiny press pack waiting for me! As I’m just 6 weeks away from meeting Mini Madam, my head is firmly back in ‘new mum’ territory and I’m forever buying up newborn essentials. Any developments from my favourite brands are therefore big news.

So it turns out that Tommee Tippee have been watching mums shopping for soothers for some time and discovered two main findings…

  1. Mums struggle to find what they are looking for when buying soothers, with 1 in 3 mums buying on impulse in store
  2. Baby acceptance of soothers is down to trial and error, often with several purchases before finding one baby likes

I can certainly empathise with this. Dexter wasn’t fussed about soothers when he was tiny. I think this was down to a combination of many things. He was hospitalised in his first few weeks with Strep B and given one by the midwives so maybe he subconsciously associates soothers with this experience… whatever the reason, he continually spat out any we gave him. tt soothers

I’m not against soothers though. Research has shown that, used in moderation, they are fabulous as a night aid for providing baby with comfort and security, and can even reduce cot death. Nowadays the majority are also designed by medical professionals and hundreds of hours go into creating a safe and comfortable experience for our little ones to suck upon. This is exactly what the professionals at Tommee Tippee have done with their new soothers. Designed in conjunction with a leading paediatric dentist, they feature a large, long, flat teat which is easier to hold in baby’s mouth (just like a bottle tests) and in tests, the new soother design was accepted first time by more babies. They’re also suitable to use from birth and are designed with an orthopedic silicone teat to support healthy oral development.

But the best thing by far is the new easy to understand packaging. They come in 4 ranges - Fun, Anytime, Night Time and Air with the age suitability clearly displayed. They’re also far more engaging for little people with fun new colours and designs - making it far easier for mum to locate them in cot bedding, under the sofa, under the telly… the list goes on!

17 Weeks Pregnant (Part 2): Introducing a new Brother or Sister

Posted on

I’m pretty sure that Dex has sussed out that he has a new brother or sister coming. Strangely, I think he’s also worked out he or she is in my tummy. And here was me thinking that under 5′s are usually told that their mums and dads bought a new baby from a hospital shop, or had a secret meeting with the baby-fairy!

All the signs are pointing to the fact he knows. He’s recently become obsessed with flicking through mother & baby magazines and pointing to pictures of babies. He’ll kiss the pages, rip them out and bring them to us with the proudest look on his face.

Over the last few months, our living room has also become a student obstetrician’s paradise with tons of pregnancy books scattered around. I’m pretty obsessed with learning about the new baby and like to follow my pregnancy week by week. One of these books is heavily pictorial and has become a firm favourite with my little man. He’ll stare for hours at pictures of pregnant women (…obviously we’ve got our fingers crossed this isn’t the start of a lifelong fetish!).

Although he can’t talk yet, Dexter is able to understand basic commands. “Where’s Daddy?” will see him searching out Craig, and “Up the wooden hill for Bedfordshire” (a.k.a up the stairs to bed) will result in him hiding behind the sofa. Now, when we say “Where’s the baby?” he’ll lift up his shirt and rub his belly! Whenever my own belly is out he’ll bend over and kiss it too. The only explanation I can think of is that his choice of reading matter has prompted the connection between my bump and a baby. At just 18 months, I’m now thinking I have an utter genius on my hands.

Finally, he’s become very loving over the past few months. Previously you’d have to pin him down for a cuddle and he’d wriggle free in minutes. He’d kiss you occasionally but he wouldn’t seek it out - it would always be as a result of us bending down at an opportune moment. Now he’ll run into our arms, climb onto our laps and bat books and mobile phones out of our hands to plant a kiss on our lips. It’s an amazing and very welcome transition but I can’t help but link it to the new baby. It’s as though he knows his days as an only child (with exclusive access to us) are numbered.

Has anyone else had two babies in short amount of time, and experienced anything similar with their eldest? I’d love to hear your stories.
