REVIEW: Minnie’s Macaroon Animal Beanie

Posted on

“Now this is my kind of review” I thought to myself as I stumbled across a tweet from @MinniesMacaroon - an opportunity to sample a home made crochet hat for Dexter!

It’s a well known fact that I love championing UK businesses. I’m all for anything home made too. My idea of hell is Disney (although I’ll allow myself to be dragged there ONCE. For Dexter’s sake) as I love things that are unique, imperfect, and made from fingers and not machines. Our whole house is homage to this mantra so this review is one of those special ones you love to write.

Minnie’s Macaroon is therefore the sort of business I go a bit gooey-eyed over. At the moment the selection is limited to crochet hats and gorgeous knitted & fair trade soft toys - but soon the selection is to include booties and accessories.

When our hat arrived I wasn’t disappointed - it’s a beautiful monkey hat complete with pointy ears! Yep. Very apt. I did wonder about the size - I was given a child’s small which we were told would be suitable for children from 3-18 months (a rather wide size guide) but it’s only slightly too big for Dexie at 11 months. I have no idea if Dex has a small head or not so I’d recommend seeking out the exact measurements before ordering for yourself.

Turning the hat inside out I was really impressed that the material (Icelandic yarn) was soft to touch and there were no nobbles to irritate Dexter - it feels like I’m forever cutting out labels to save them from stratching his skin. The hat has no real ‘cuff’ either so you’re not forcing it over his head and seeing marks on his skin from where it’s sat. Instead the hat is lightly tapered which means it stays put on his head without falling forwards over his eyes (an absolute no no for my monkey).

The other thing that’s well worth mentioning is that upon taking it off after a 2 hour period - Dexter didn’t have ‘hat hair’. This is unheard of for Dexter. Usually he wakes up looking like Boris Johnson’s love-child - but for some reason this hat didn’t cause that ‘static effect’ you sometimes see when wool comes into contact with children with fine hair. I’m not sure if this was a fluke, or if the material should be credited - either way it means it scores bonus points from me. Better still Minnie’s Macaroon hats are machine washable at 30 degrees - good stuff.

At £11 this is of course more than you pay on the high street - but then you do have that wonderful feeling that you’re getting something hand crafted and special. There’s a whole raft of animals to choose from too which is great if you have something special in mind. Just a selection are shown above, but you can view the whole selection here.

Overall I’m really impressed and would recommend them wholeheartedly!

DISCLOSURE : Dexter recieved his hat free of charge but all words and opinions are Mummy’s!
